Detailed Reviews

The Barachois Inn is in its beautiful location on the north side of PEI just a few minutes away from North Rustico. North Rustico is where you will find all of your dining and shopping options in the area and the Innkeeper is extremely knowledgeable of the local area. When we arrived, Andrea was sitting on the porch and promptly checked us in, showed us around the property and gave us a quick tour of all the amenities, she was amazing. Usually breakfasts at B&B are fixed, but Andrea goes the extra mile and gives you several options, all deliciously freshly cooked from scratch with local farm to table items, you will not want to miss breakfast! The rooms are very spacious and tastefully decorated. The beds are super comfortable and have very soft and cozy linens. The room we were in with its en suite bathroom had a Jacuzzi tub and a walk-in shower both. The entire Inn is immaculately decorated and super clean. Outside, you have ample parking and if you have an EV, there are several charging stations that are powered by a solar system. Many old Inns you cannot open the windows for fresh air but here the windows have been replaced as well as the screens so you can comfortably open the windows. Barachois Inn is so accommodating and will help you anyway they can. When we are back in the area, we will definitely be staying at the Barachois Inn and I highly recommend them to you if you are in the area.

Lovely inn in quiet setting with great breakfast. Host is very accommodating and helpful with restaurant suggestions. You need a car to stay here as you drive to get to town and to restaurants, but the drive is short and easy.
We stayed for 3 nights and really enjoyed ourselves. We had a third floor guest room which was a bit small, but it had everything we needed including a small refrigerator and a coffee maker.

Honestly I am still confused about my experience here. As someone who enjoys the atmosphere of a B&B I thought this could not go wrong based on the reviews. Upon arrival we were immediately confronted with the strong, unmistakable smell of cigarette smoke. Not a passing odor, but a deep, persistent smell of a building where people smoke regularly. Unsure of how to respond we checked in and went up to our room. The smoke smell was not as strong and we made an attempt to stay, deliberating for about 30 minutes, but I found myself wheezing and coughing and we decided it wasn’t going to work out.
My husband calmly but frankly approached the owner to let her know we could not stay because the establishment is not non-smoking as advertised. She immediately became very agitated and responded that we would have to pay in full anyway. She then started pacing around and yelling about how there is no smell of smoke. We were caught off guard by the response but firmly insisted we would not be able to pay. She offered to give us a room in the other house on the property for an upcharge, which we were not eager to take her up on because her response was making us so uncomfortable. After several more attempts from the owner to get us to pay for all or half of our stay even though we had to leave, and our refusal, she told us we needed to leave the property. Fortunately we booked through a 3rd party service that was able to ensure we would not be charged. The customer service agent said the owner confirmed our account of what had happened.
This was a very stressful experience that put a damper on our trip. After driving all day we had to scramble to find other accommodations and drive back across the island to a chain hotel. I hope this review will save someone else the stress of our experience. Even if the smoke smell doesn’t bother you, the place was not that great. The bedspread was stained, the towels were frayed and left my hands smelling musty, and the owner was aggressive and unprofessional. If you are looking for a comfortable, hospitable atmosphere, this is anything but that. I am perplexed and unable to reconcile this bad experience with the happy feedback of other reviewers.

Thank you for your feedback as it is important to us. I am responding to your email as the owner of the Barachois Inn and to say that the person who checked you into the Inn was a staff person. We are sorry that you were not able to stay at the Barachois Inn. The Barachois Inn is a non-smoking property and we have been serving guests for 40 years with a non-smoking policy. Our reservation policy regarding same day cancellation of a reservation is that there is no refund and the policy is the same whether the reservation is made directly with the property or with the on line travel agency. Because the reservation was booked by you through the on line travel agency, I was contacted by a representative of the OTA with your request to be refunded the entire amount and I wanted to let you know that the refund was given because I agreed to the refund as I was informed that you were not comfortable in staying because of your health concerns. We have noted your other comments and have completed a thorough check of the accommodation and we found the accommodation unit to be satisfactory. We continue to rent the accommodation unit and have satisfied customers at the Barachois Inn. We are pleased that you found new accommodation and hope that you enjoyed your holiday on PEI. The good news is that rooms at the Barachois are clean and most of the usual boxes were checked including dishes, cable TV, coffee, iron et al. The exterior was well looked after and both buildings have multiple porches with comfortable furniture. There isn't a great deal to look at, but the views are pleasant and the road outside is quiet.
Unfortunately, we thought our room would be in a well restored heritage building and offer comfortable accommodations but neither applied. Our (second floor) room was cluttered, the windows were small (see pictures) and the shower stall was tiny (see picture).
It was also clear that whoever did the restoration simply gutted the interior rather than restore anything. Nothing was left of the original interior (not an exaggeration) and the furnishings are what you would expect to find at a low to mid-level department store. We had a fake fireplace and artificial flowers.
Breakfast was okay, including a choice between eggs, French toast or oatmeal, all with the usual sides. Corners were cut here too though ... The jam was Kraft and the blueberries used to garnish on our French toast were frozen at a time of year when fresh local blueberries are offered in abundance throughout the island. The coffee provided in our room was a choice between Folgers and Maxwell House.
I should note that there are two buildings and each has two floors, so maybe the other floors and/or other building are somewhat different, but it seemed like just about every possible corner was cut here, leaving us to wonder why others offered such generous reviews.

Thank you for your feedback as we appreciate the time that you take to do this. Regarding your comment, unfortunately, " we thought our room would be in a well restored heritage building" , I believe that you have mistakenly described the MacDonald House because it is not a restored building but rather it is a building that was built in 2001. This is how it is described in our promotional and marketing information. The Suite is located on the second floor of the MacDonald House, has a 9 foot ceiling, 520 square feet or 82 meters and dormer windows in which you can stand. The room has many amenities and offers views of the rolling farm land, the Rustico Bay, the Dunes of Robinson's Island Prince Edward Island National Park. Judy MacDonald, Barachois Inn

Barachois, a place where dreams are realized and memories are made. This charming Inn welcomes it's guests through a cottage garden into the warmth of a Victorian home that is not only stylish but impeccably kept. The calming aqua tones of Suite 5 made one feel relaxed and mindful of the surrounding waters of Rustico. Judy, Andrea and George were wonderful hosts. Their Island charm and warmth made the visit very comfortanle.
Andrea served us delicious breakfasts each morning and accomodated all tastes. George poured us coffee while entertaining the guests with his wit and charm. One of the highlights of the trip was visiting the Doucette Farmhouse. We partook in a culinary class that taught us how to make and experience a true Acadian meal.
Our hosts Arnold and Carter went above and beyond ! We cooked, we chatted, we picked fresh vegetables, laughed non stop and then enjoyed our feast. The ambiance that these two created was magical. The Maritime hospitality that we received by team Barachois was sincere, delightful and unforgetable. We loved you all!

What a wonderful inn! We stayed in the Gallant House, the historic house that is one of two properties on the site. We had a second floor room which was really a suite. One room served as the bedroom (and had a tv) and the other room, which was just as big, was the bathroom and dressing room with a huge armoire. The bathroom had a walk in shower and a jacuzzi tub. It's a lovely place and Judy McDonald and her daughter are excellent hosts. Breakfast is cooked made to order every morning, and our package included dinner at The Mill (superb food), passes to the Prince Edward Island National Park, passes to all the Anne of Green Gables sites, a carriage ride, and a picnic lunch prepared by Andrea. Because they were born and raised on Prince Edward Island, they can tell you all the good things to see and do. One afternoon, we rested and sat on the porch with them and swapped stories. The McDonalds are wonderful people! You can even arrange to have your laundry done while you are a guest there. The rooms in the Gallant house are all on the second and third floors and there is not an elevator but the McDonald house has rooms that are accessible for everyone. We give this one a 100 out of 10!

The Inn itself is beautiful and cozy. However the beds in room #4 are terrible! The twin bed needs to be replaced with a firm, thick mattress. The current thin mattress literally sits on the bed springs, so whoever sleeps there feels the springs all night!
Breakfast needs to be revamped. More breakfast choices need to be made available--not just eggs, french toast, bacon, toast, cereal, fruit, oj, and coffee. My boyfriends asked for pancakes one day and was told no pancakes available.
Andrea and Judy are pleasant hosts and were helpful with dinner reservations and suggestions on what to do.

Thank you for your feedback as it is important to us. I am sorry that you were not happy with the beds and we look into this situation. I am not sure if you were dissatisfied with the double bed, too. The twin bed is intended for a family travelling with a young child and we may remove the single bed as this room is mostly used by adults. We have noted your comments with regard to breakfast. What a delightful Inn to spend a week in PEI. It was so cozy and clean and lovely. Andrea, who cooked breakfast also provided a litany of island stories to keep you both entertained and informed. Prince Edward Island is so lovely, the people are warm and friendly just like this wonderful Inn.

The attention to detail at the Barachois Inn was an example to be learned by inns everywhere. Our stay was for 3 nights, every day we were more taken with this outstanding Inn and its hosts. Our hosts and staff were extremely attentive to all our needs above even those we hadn't thought of. This inn is so clean that I felt I needed to go home and set my standards higher.
Our room had everything and more needed for a comfortable stay right down to cutlery and assorted lovely glassware.
The rooms were very large and ours had a lovely walk out deck where we could sit and enjoy their amazing and beautiful well maintained gardens.
The breakfasts offered were homemade and served as you arrived. The choice of venue was generous and thought out.

Hard to say, since I don't know the Graham Inn. I guess, if you want a pool, you go there. I liked the rooms in the Barachois Inn very much. The Building is brand new, but that only shows in terms of quality, not in terms of style! On the contrary: Very much true to the old style, very beautiful! We had a very large room with kitchen, sitting area... Gorgeous!
Breakfast was great. I liked the buildings, the porch, the little flower garden, the green grounds, the beautiful church on the other side of the street...
Hope that helps
