Called in here for a Sunday lunch with my wife, daughter and a friend plus a fourteen week year old puppy. Didn't know what to expect. We all had a very warm welcome, especially the puppy. Delicious well cooked roast lunch. Hard to beat value for money. Nice atmosphere. Highly recommend.

Thanks for that great review. It is very much appreciated. If I could rate the puppy, it would get 10/10! Do call again if you're down this way. Alison.

We came for a Sunday lunch last weekend - two grandparents, two kids under 10 and my husband and I. The pub was clean, warm and friendly, and we ordered drinks and then our lunch and sat in the restaurant side of the pub. The food is perfect: wonderfully cooked beef and pork, crispy potatoes and parsnips and fresh veg...

We dropped in by chance when we were looking at a house in the area. I have never in my life received such a warm welcome - we were total strangers but the landlord and landlady made it feel like we were long lost friends. My partner is an ale drinker and loves both the selection and quality of ale...

barman started abusing a local gentleman for no reason then proceeded to start on our group and ultimately kick us out without just cause or reasoning. I hope everyone sees this post as it's obviously not child/family friendly. hope your business fails this year :) happy 2017!

Thanks for your review. However, if you were honest, the barman kicked you out as it was closing time anyway and he didn't want to serve you drinks after time. Yes, he told your mate Derek to eff off after he'd slammed his glass down on the bar when he'd been refused another drink, but everyone has his or her...

We went to the black bull for food and drinks the night before our wedding at Matfen Hall. Alison and Nigel did everything to make us feel welcome and the food and drink we had was absolutely brilliant. Both work really hard to ensure a great place for the locals and anyone else coming from a far. Defo returning on...

A great Sunday lunch here with masses of veg, we were so full we couldn't even contemplate pudding. It's a very friendly pub, always helpful and great to take the dog in. We live 20 miles away but it's worth the trip, good beer too and a great welcome.

Thank you for your great review. I do try and tell Chef that we'd sell more puddings if he didn't make the dinners so big but to no avail! Glad you felt at home with your dog too - we are a genuinely dog-friendly pub and I love fussing over our four-legged visitors. Call in again soon.

Have visited here a few times previously when we've stayed at Matfen Hall, but decided to come up for Sunday lunch and so pleased that we did. It was cooked perfectly, I couldn't make my mind up whether to have the pork or beef & the chef suggested to have a bit of both! They don't have an extensive menu...

Thank you for your lovely review and sorry it's taken me so long to respond. I agree that small is perfect when it comes to our menu, and Hubby does do the perfect Sunday Lunch! Honestly, your positive review really helps us carry on through the winter months.

A proper pint, great service, a good crack and home cooked food. Rare to get this type of pub in this day and age. If you are bored of faceless, ubiquitous chain pubs then get yourself over to Matfen and the Black Bull.
