We booked into Whitworth Hall for a couples break for new year. We arrived late afternoon in the dark so couldn’t appreciate the setting until the next morning. It really is set in beautiful surroundings and the close proximity of the deer park really is lovely.
We were checked in without hassle and booked in for an evening meal. We arrived at our room and was initially pleased with the size. However the room really did need an update and it wasn’t particularly clean. There was an empty biscuit wrapper on the floor next to the bed, one of the glasses on the tray was dirty and the mirror over desk was splattered with something??? Nothing too major but definitely worth point out as these lacks do need addressing with the cleaning team. The bathroom was where the updating was required mostly though...there was a dangerously sharp loose tile on the bathroom floor and light over the mirror didn’t work. It really does need a schedule of upgrades on the whole property. It is quite tired in a lot of areas.

We had a meal in the library restaurant on the first evening and this really was delicious. The restaurant staff were attentive in particular the restaurant manager, nothing was too much trouble for him. The food was of a great quality and in our opinion very fairly priced. We enjoyed 2 courses for £21.95 and a superb bottle of wine priced at £16.95.

The breakfast was of equally high standard. We ordered full English and eggs benedict which were delicious and freshly cooked. The only downside of the breakfast was that the staff working the breakfast service were not of as high standard as the evening staff. They were never around to order anything with, nor did they explain the breakfast process. The milk on the buffet table was empty and there was no individual milk on the table for our cup of tea and when asked for milk we were delivered a full large jug instead of an individual one. Nothing major but again just a minor attention to detail which was lacking.

We would return to the hotel as the location, setting and food were good but cosmetically it does need some improvements.

This was our first time at Whitworth Hotel and it was lovely. The staff were all very pleasant, helpful and friendly. The Hotel itself is well kept. You can see it's naturally ageing, but it's well maintained. It was clean and tidy throughout. The rooms are spacious with everything you might need - wifi, ironing board and iron, hair dryer, tv, phone etc. and with fully adjustable heating which is a bonus when being faced with the ever changing British weather. The view from our room was beautiful (I've included a photo). The grounds are beautiful and again well maintained. We had a walk around a few times in the couple of days we were there. The food was lovely from the bar menu. The Venison burger (ironic I know) is a must try! The breakfast selection was brilliant too with plenty cereals, fruit, yoghurt, pastries and of course, a full English cooked to order. Oh and Afternoon Tea (photo attached) was a treat. Offered in the Garden Room, everything was fresh with plenty selection of sandwiches and cakes all, again, with a lovely view of the grounds. Feeding the Deer is a novel little addition to the visit. My only criticism would be the price of drinks at the bar, they were a little on the pricey side. That said, as a one off, you might not mind spending a little more than normal. Finaly, we must give a special mention to Miranda. She could not have been more as a host. Pleasant, friendly and extremely helpful. Nothing seemed a bother to her. Always smiling and cheerful. An asset to Whitworth Hotel! We will be back to enjoy their Afternoon Tea and to also stay over again for a couple of nights. Thank you Whitworth Hotel.

Me and my partner had a lovely nights stay at Whitworth Hall hotel, in November. One of the best part of this night away was the beautiful grounds and deer! You can pay 50p for a bag of deer food at reception and feed them. We went when it was rutting season so couldn’t go in the fields with them but I would definitely be going back to do this soon!
The staff couldn’t do enough for you! You are made to feel at home for sure :)
We got upgraded to the deluxe room which was very spacious, and fitting with the hall’s style. The curtains are incredible!!!! they block out every inch of light, so we had a lovely nights sleep.
The only issue we had was the rooms heating didn’t work when we arrived so it was rather cold, they did there best to resolve this however we ended up having a portable heater which didn’t smell too nice.
Overall a lovely setting and very good for the price!

Stayed here for one night 30th December 2019. The room we were given (25 I think) was dated, grubby, had a bad smell, carpet looked like it hadnt been vacuumed in weeks. The bedside tables looked like they had been in a smoke filled room for years. I went back to reception and explained and was offered for the room to be vacuumed however that was not the only issue with the room. I asked if we could upgrade and was told there were 2 rooms available and was given one at no extra charge which we appreciated greatly. However we did have to wait nearly an hour as the room needed cleaned. The room we were given (9 I think) was better than the previous room but still not the nicest hotel room I've stayed in which is such a shame as the hotel itself and the surroundings are beautiful. The food was absolutely delicious and could not be faulted so well done to the chef. We had chicken and venison and both were perfect. The manager was a lovely friendly guy and was very accommodating. My opinion is that this hotel needs a good amount of money spending on the guest rooms before being able to call itself durhams "best kept secret".

Our daughter had a fantastic time seeing and feeding the lovely deer around this hotel, and we would definitely drop by again to see them.
Sadly we would not stay as despite being very cheap, there were too many issues with the rooms, broken key card machine, no WiFi, unable to turn down heated towel rail, toilet not flushing, etc. Due to staff shortages it was hard to get help with these. Big rooms though and some friendly service.

Our daughter and son in law paid for a one night stay for my wife and i on 29 Dec as part of xmas present. We were given room 7.However when a tap was turned on a huge air lock virtually shook the whole room. We were then allocated room 5, the hotel representative asked us to ignore the unmade Z bed and the "unpressed" duvet on double bed and claimed it had been cleaned. We went down to bar for bar meal only to be told there was only one type of sandwich we could order, apparently this was beacause "it was xmas" so went back to room to get changed. My wife had suspicions about standard of housekeeping so she pulled the duvet back and the sheets and pillows were heavily marked and clearly not clean. Back to reception, on to room number 3 (26),the furthest point away from main hotel andlooking straight at car park. We were told it was an inferior room to what had been paid for by our daughter. I asked if she would be refunded the difference only to be informed that as original room had been booked on Booking.Com no refund could be given. We left the hotel after being told she would be given a full refund. Our daughter had to contact hotel twice as they did not contact her and the info proved to be untrue. She was offered another nights stay at her convenience but when she gave them Valentines night they point blank refused her request. So needlesly to say we won't be returning to this hotel.

Stayed here for a night away for my birthday. What an amazing experience. The staff were so attentive and friendly.
We were given room 1 ..what an amazing room. Huge 4 poster bed with dual aspect windows. One of the dear and one of the gardens with the sunset. The bed was super comfy and with window seats and chairs the room had everything that you wanted.
Dinner at night in the library room was a delight. The waiter was very attentive and again nothing was too much trouble. The quality of the food superb.
We were so impressed we have booked the same room again for later in the year.
Thank you Whitworth Hall for making my Birthday perfect.

We stayed at this hotel for a romantic break, big mistake. The hotel holds functions which is not a problem, lssue was we were not informed and booked a 4 poster room at a premium and was put directly above the venue. Noise for the music was unbearable and went on till midnight after which we endured another hour of people shouting and screaming. When we approached the night manger his reply was ‘we licensed till midnight ‘ with a attitude of get over it. Have no issue with hotel hosting functions but advising us at check in so we could decide to stay or not would of been helpful.

Despite all the restrictions currently in place the staff (bar one) made us feel very welcome. One lady, the head receptionist, Miranda, deserves a very large compliment for making a huge difference to us a family, and going that extra mile for us. The rest of the staff are superb.

The food is very good, but due to restrictions the restaurant did lack a little ambiance . The restaurant staff were very helpful.

The hotel is in need of an upgrade. The wifi is not what you'd expect these days and was non existent in our rooms.

I think there were a few teething problems with house keeping due to the restrictions. I would respectfully describe the room cleanliness as adequate. You don't expect to find cobwebs on light fittings and dust on fixed items like the room TV.

Our rooms were cluttered, with too many chairs and other things. The bed was adequate. Our rooms smelt musty.

Beautiful grounds and lovely friendly staff. The hotel itself is not really my sort of thing but it is a lovely place. I think the hotel itself loses some of its appeal because of the Pandemic situation but I must say that the hotel staff absolutely try their best and are extremely polite, friendly and helpful... But the biggest stars.... The Deers!!! These amazing creatures are beautiful and friendly.. get some bags of food at £2 per bag from reception.. and they will be your best friends.. well at least until the bag is empty. Stunning grounds to walk around in..
Breakfast was a bit quiet.. needs some background music or something.

Currently the deer are rutting so are unable to walk amongst them and the grounds but you are more than welcome to come and buy deer food from reception and feed them through fence.
