Wildes Inns offers spacious and stylish rooms, though some guests have mentioned challenges with the air conditioning and noise levels. While the service receives mixed reviews, ranging from attentive to disorganized, the amenities, including innovative 'robot waiters' and diverse dining options, generally impress visitors. Opinions on value vary, with food prices deemed reasonable, but some find the rooms and drinks overpriced. The hotel maintains a lively atmosphere with live music and entertainment that many guests appreciate, despite occasional cleanliness oversights.

I am so very happy that Van Dykes have re-opened for the Dine At Home Menu.
I saw the menu launch last week and called on Friday to pre-order Sunday lunch for today. The person on the phone took my order and card details for payment, instructed me what I needed to do when I collected today and asked what time I would like my meals ready.
I collected the meals at 2pm, everything was ready, the reception was clearly marked out with sanitising station at the door. Everything was fabulous, I was greeted by a lovely young lady on the reception who collected my food from the kitchen and placed it on a table for me to pick up.
I was extremely happy about how the hotel have implemented the new safety regulations, I’m currently 37 weeks pregnant so don’t go anywhere but knew after the conversation on the phone on Friday that the hotel would be safe and well thought threw with the guidelines.
The meal itself was incredible!!! We had both need and vegetarian and can honestly say there was not a scrap left. The food was hot, the beef was cooked slightly pink (perfect) the Yorkshire puddings were huge and the vegetables and gravy outstanding!!
Having this meal after all these weeks In lockdown was like a slice of heaven on a plate! Thankyou so much to everyone at Van Dyks for re-opening this menu, for making me feel very safe and looked after whilst collecting and to the chef for cooking the amazing food we have eaten today!
The one downside is that I forgot to order pudding, I was so excited about the Sunday lunch it slipped my mind but I will definitely be ordering it next time.
The extension part of the hotel looks fabulous and I cannot wait to come for a visit once everything is back to normal!
Great work to you all!
Xx

My wife and I had a lovely dining experience in the new restaurant, the Orangery.
Compliance to Covid 19 was clearly implemented along with sanitising stations.
The car park is large and well lit, the dining room bright and airy, staff well presented and professional and interact with customers.
My wife had mushrooms then beef and ale pie followed by blackberry and apple cake, I had teriyaki chicken strips and tandoori halloumi burger all food was delicious sadly I did not have a sweet as was driving but normally love cheese and biscuits with a port so will be going back to Van Dyk by Wildes.

Thank you

In one word...WOW!! I booked this hotel after seeing a friend on social media sharing the live music on the lawn event for Saturday 1st August. When my partner and I drove up to the hotel we both looked at each other and smiled. On first impression we thought GORGEOUS. As you walk in to the reception the BEAUTIFUL flower wall and newly refurbished area looked stylish and modern. The staff greeted us and checked us in seamlessly. In fact the entire stay was seamless. When we arrived at our room it was like brand new, absolutely stunning. The staff are extremely friendly and helpful and well presented, which suits the hotel perfectly. I think if I had to be true to myself and say ONE thing that bothered me, it was when we were sat in the bar area, we were moving our empty glasses off the tables ourselves on to the bar but its a minor niggle. The food and service was impeccable. We came with friends and all four of us had a GREAT time! We are already planning on returning and enjoying the spa facilities. Thank you to all at Van Dyk, Chesterfield.

Stayed over bank holiday weekend during COVID. Advised to wear mask in all public areas (we were the only ones doing this). People were coming and going at breakfast passing in corridor wearing no mask. There was no one-way system in place. You could be in one room with a mask whilst other people passing through wore none. No consistent standard. No screen at reception. No staff name badges through were dressed smartly. No idea how to order room service as no instructions in room or from reception. Breakfast was cold the first morning. Second morning they were understaffed and extremely busy with a long wait to be seated (once seated people were walking past you within the 1m advised). The cleaners we see were not wearing masks (in reception as we were advised to) or gloves. On the monday morning we did not have breakfast as again a long wait and everyone was serving themselves with the same serving tools and picking up their own plates from a pile (not very COVID friendly). One morning no hot water - told someone had left a tap running ? and thank you for your understanding.. no refund offered or we are sorry. On leaving we didn't even get asked if we had a nice stay (which incidentely would have prompted my partner to complain politely). NO social distancing in the resturant in the "old" building when waiting for a table and again no screens at the bar (as a bare minimum). Lovely decor, nice room (though a little under-lit), full breakfast was very tasty, but the hotel is not very COVID friendly given the current situation... at bare minimum would have expected screens and mandatory mask wearing (it does say this on entrance but was definitely not enforced or encouraged in any way) hand sanitiser and that was about it, even the no one was reminded or advised to use it by the staff as a matter of course. Disappointing, no atmosphere and the staff (not wearing masks) never smile so might as well put one on as it wouldn't make a difference .

Dear ScorpioCarol, Thank you for taking the time to leave a review on your experience with us at Van Dyk by Wildes. I'm very sorry to hear you were not 100% satisfied with your visit. The guidelines state that guests should wear masks in public areas in hotels, other than the restaurant and bar areas. Unfortunately as a business all we can do is advise all guests to do so. It is not currently in the guidelines for any staff members, whether be cleaners or not, to wear face coverings. I do apologise that you feel we are not COVID friendly; I can assure you we are doing everything by the guidelines and are accredited AA COVID-19 Confident. I will be passing on your comments to departmental leaders and I once again thank you for your feedback. Please don't hesitate to let us know if we can be of any further assistance. Kind regards, Rebecca Guest Journey Manager

Bit disappointed with it really. Last minute booking for night with dinner bed and breakfast.

Had so much trouble booking and paying on their website, it then duplicated the booking somintried for 40+ minutes to get through to them on the number given on the booking confirmation, eventually I managed to get hold of a number that worked and it was sorted out.

The hotel looks lovely from the outside and walking into the reception area is quite impressive.

Easy enough to check in and get to the room, the room 211 is an executive room, but in my opinion it is poor. The quality of the finish is dire, to say its supposed to be a high end room is questionable.

The plaster work is rough is several places, silicone is missing and rough, the room had saw dust on the floor and sofa.

At a glance the bathroom looks rather nice, but then you see the finished detail.

Down stair in the bar area again it all looks very nice, the snug aint so snug, the chairs are very uncomfortable (should swap them for the sofas in the reception).

Ordered a pint and a Rhubarb & Ginger gin, with Ginger ale, this came to over £14, £3.80 for a gingel ale mixer, sorry but that's just too excessive, we've been to city center hotels and bars and not been charged that much for a mixer.

Food on the evening was OK, wasn't blown away with it, but perfectly acceptable.

Breakfast time was a bit of a joke, waited almost an hour to get our breakfast out to us amd there were people who got missed out who got in before us. Food was going to the wrong people, toast coming and going was all a bit comical.

All in all I wouldn't be rushing back, which is unfortunate as its on our doorstep.

Stayed overnight for a friends wedding on September 12th. The wedding was at 1.30pm but we couldn’t check in until 3pm even though we were part of the wedding party, not great so we had to stay elsewhere the evening before as we needed somewhere to get ready. First impressions of the hotel was the location wasn’t as picturesque as I’d expected, located on a busy road with a new housing estate being built opposite. The interior is far nicer and smelled clean. The service at the wedding reception was excellent, as was the food. All the waitresses were pleasant and attentive.
We finally checked into our room at 6pm. We’d booked a Garden room which apparently is on the new side of the hotel. First impressions of the room were good, until we saw the view from the room which was looking out onto the main road! We tried to switch on the bedside lamps, they didn’t work. We also discovered that we only had hand towels in the bathroom. Dead wasps on the window ledge also wasn’t acceptable. We went to reception to report these findings and was told they were having issues with towels (due to Covid?!?) and promised we’d have towels in our room by the end of the day and that the lamps probably needed new bulbs.
End of the day we returned to our room..still no towels and only 1 lamp working. Called reception who said they would bring towels immediately. The young man from reception came to our room & handed me 4 hand towels, apologising for the lack of bath towels!
For a 4 star hotel you expect everything to be spot on. Although the food & service were excellent, those little touches that were missing didn’t match up to the 4 star experience I was expecting. We did get a very small discount for the inconvenience which was appreciated, but I’m not sure if I’d return. Housekeeping needs to be addressed if things are getting overlooked, but other than that I can’t find fault with all the other staff, from reception to waitresses.

I have fond family memories of this hotel/restaurant going back to my childhood, formative and 'courting' (my now-wife) years and I still enjoy visiting nowadays on occasion for a meal or a few drinks, even though it is hardly my 'local' and there are plenty of fine establishments closer to where we live. Having said that, when my wife, having followed their facebook page for a while noticed an offer of half price 'afternoon tea' we were soon booking. We went for the 'Royale', not the cheapest afternoon tea on offer but with chocolate dipped strawberries and prosecco we felt it suited us best. And it did! Very enjoyable, expertly prepared with sandwiches and pastries and tean and coffee in addition, just about the right amount of food for me to feel about right. My wife, who insisted on eating exactly the same amount as I did (despite having a noticeably smaller volume!) felt somewhat fuller, although not quite to the point of discomfort. Rather encouragingly, it looks like the hotel is being invested in with additional accomodation and a spa, so we might well be heading back shortly to give this a try. Like I say, we have a soft spot for the place, but that would not last long were the service and food on offer not appropriate. So, a very enjoyable experience, so much so that my daughter and boyfriend have also booked for the afternoon tea experience and I can certainly recommend it.

When we checked in, we were told the hotel will be adding £100 onto our credit cards, the unused balance refundable in 2-3 days time, after we checked out, we were told. This was to insure against ‘incidentals’. They actually meant, in case we did a bunk and left the hotel without settling our bills. Since the hotel had our credit card numbers and since we were on a dinner, bed and breakfast plan (as were most of the other guests, we checked), £100 seems excessive and made us feel we were checking into a no-star hotel in the Far East, where, I suppose, guests frequently escape without paying their bills. I have stayed in less exalted hotels and bed and breakfasts where the guest’s honour was taken in good faith. But not at the Van Dyk!
Check in is at 1500, if you want an early check in, you have to pay £25 for the privilege. This was to allow deep cleaning of their rooms, due to increased covid protocols. Or so they say!
My ‘suite’ was dirty, the bins have not been emptied, the mugs and spoons were filthy. There was a hairpin on the table. When I spoke to the duty manageress about this, she offered me a bottle of wine, I did not accept this as I was only pointing out the discrepancy between the lack of covid protocols and their website’s assurance. To make things worse, having being assured that it was an aberration, the next day my bins were not emptied again!
Do not be fooled by their suite names either. The ‘garden suite’ has nothing to do with gardens but was so named because that wing was built where a garden center used to be. We booked a Wilde suite, was assured it was a Wilde suite, but the sign behind the door said it was a ‘spa suite’. The prices were all the same, the difference being in size and design. Still, I would like to have been given what I booked.
The saving grace was the staff who were all friendly and helpful. The ladies in the restaurant were particularly attentive and efficient. The menu was eclectic and had varied choices. My meals were delicious on both nights and so were my companions’.
Would I stay there again? Maybe, as the Ibis is the only other alternative. Would I recommend the Van Dyk to friends? Only if I disliked them immensely and want them to be stuck with an extra £100 on their credit cards refundable, as the receptionist told us, in 2-3 days time!

WOW! What an amazing team of staff at Van Dyk.
They are all an absolute credit to the place. From the women on reception, chefs to the waiters & bar tenders who had the pleasure of our company untill 2am 😂

We have recently had our wedding here and it was the most perfect day with memories that will stay with us forever. Even though we won it through one of their competitions and did not have to pay for much we were not treated any different and nothing was too much trouble which I found very humbling.

The wedding meal and evening buffet was absolutely fantastic and many of the guests commented on how lovely it was. Food was served on time, warm and attention to detail was second to none.

We also had the luxury of the bridal suite which is very grand and spacious with picturesque views and an amazing bathroom!

The breakfast the following morning was a hot buffet with a wide selection, juices, teas coffee and fruit, cereal, yoghurt etc there was something for everyone. 10/10

The hotel grounds are just unbelievably stunning especially in the evening with all the twinkling lights. Inside is modern and up to date, very clean with good amenities.

I would like to say a massive THANKYOU to Lauren and the wedding team you did an absolutely amazing job & everything was beyond perfect.
Lauren you really are one in a million you made the day run so smoothly and went above and beyond for us both! Words will never be enough to explain how thankful we are. I wish you all the happiness in the world.

Love Mr and Mrs Wheatley xxx
