This is a small, family run hotel, ski in-ski out property. It is a little quirky, but that is half the fun. Our Japanese room was very large, warm, with a toilet and basin, but the corridor was filled with lockers-our room was on the entrance level- but it was not what I expected. The Captain was an excellent host,... More

We have been coming to Shiga Kogen since 2008 and this is our fifth stay at Villa Alpen. The feeling of being welcomed back, with big smiles and warm hugs, is fantastic and genuine. Captain, Hiroko, Ken & the staff are wonderful, as are the superb dinners and breakfast served daily. Being able to ski out straight from the rental... More

What a great hotel. OK so it might be an older style hotel but this it what it has in abundance: generous sized rooms with private toilet, great lounge area, free wi-fi, its own snowboard, skis, boots and poles hire facilities, just 60m from a chair lift which leads to the massive snow fields, 3 minutes from the bus drop... Is an older property however is instantly welcoming. You don't have to take off your ski boots when entering the front door. Captain and his family were lovely as well as the staff and we were made to feel at home with a very relaxed atmosphere. Exceptional food and great breakfast. Our room was comfortable with Tatami Area. Shared bathroom... More

Wonderful place to stay for a weeks skiing. The 'Captain', his family and employees are lovely and extremely helpful. Can ski from the door and can access all other ski areas in the region without shuttle bus if you want. Comfortable rooms with clean bathroom facilities. Great onsen. Captain Nobuo and his wif were fantastic! Couldn't have been more helpful. The meals, particularly dinner, were great. The wasn't much variety with breakfast - scrambled eggs (very nice though) every day. The bar is great with terrific views of the slopes - had some very pleasant evenings in there chatting to guests. From the front door you can ski... More

The captain and his son were wonderful! My sister and I did not have enough cash to pay for our stay but they allowed us to do a bank transfer after leaving the place. The food was great too. I took a ski lesson from the captain's son and he was exceedingly patient.

This is the seventh time in ten years that we've stayed at Villa Alpen and it continues to improve with age. Every year, we try another ski resort such as Hakuba and Nozawa Onsen for variety but we always end up coming"home" to Villa Alpen for a few days. The interiors are not sexy and styled up as in a... I visited and stayed at this hotel with my wife and my Swedish friend for three nights at the beginning of this March. I highly recommend this hotel by several reasons. As others have mentioned and also the captain who is the owner of the hotel has admitted, this hotel is not among most fashionable but it is old; however... More
