We walked in and asked for a room in early March. We were in town to ski at Kurodake, and the Northern Lodge was quite close. The receptionist did not speak English, but that was no problem. The room seemed fairly priced, and was clean and spacious. There was no meal service available at the time of our stay, and...

We booked this hotel through Rakuten for one night in August 2015 and had already prepaid via Rakuten. Being paranoid and bringing our credit card bill on top of our booking confirmation turned out to be a good choice. The reception lady and a younger guy did not really speak English, so I pulled out the confirmation letter to show...

I would say the room rate is fair for stay only but not to include dinner. The difference between sole room and dinner inclusive is about 5000 yen but the latter is definitely not value for money. The food quality and portion are too far away from other onsen ryokan I stayed before. Sounkyo is a famous onsen tourist spot...

Reading some of the positive reviews about this hotel, I'm wondering if my husband and I went to the same hotel - because we certainly did not experience any of the positives praised by these reviewers. From the outset, we had difficulties with this hotel. They had no email address, so I tried to call them to book. When I...

We were very lucky to find this wonderful ryokan. The family run ryokan was clean, the staff was amazingly friendly and helpful and the rooms were nice and clean. The natural onsen was great as well. The employees, from check-in to departure exemplified wonderful customer service. A lady in the gift shop went to a pharmacy and purchased special bug...

From the survey, Northern Lodge appears to be an affordable stay as we would like to avoid hotels with tons of tourists. It has perfect location too, a short walking distance to Kurodake Ropeway and other restaurants. The highlight of this hotel would be for its meals. We had lovely breakfast and dinner. The dinner comes with King Crab!!! The...

Very good value for money accommodation! There is bicycle rental at the door of the lodge. Staff are friendly and room for 4 spacious. Sounkyo is a wonderful place that I would very much love to return again

We staid only one short night in this hotel, selected by chance and looks within several options of Sounkyo Koen Machi. As frequently, the staff were a bit shy about communicating in English, but once I had tried my rudimentary Japanese swapped to their much better English. The (Japanese-style) room was fine, but nothing special. Onsen facilities exist, but were...
