The Grapes Hotel comes highly recommended for its culinary offerings, with guests often lauding the delectable food, particularly the praised Sunday carvery, and the charming outdoor seating area. Cleanliness is a priority, with rooms being consistently recognized for their tidiness, albeit with suggestions of occasional minor improvements. Visitors feel they receive excellent value, thanks to sizable portions at reasonable prices, despite a rare opinion of an overpriced experience. The hotel's staff is celebrated for their amiability and efficiency, with only sporadic service hiccups reported. While the accommodation is generally well-received, some reviewers suggest the rooms could use some modern updates.

An exceptional experience from the moment we stepped inside. This place really is top-tier. As someone who has eaten all over the world, this really impressed me. The staff were just fantastic, and the food was unbelievable quality… not to mention the huge portions. Great value for money too, and a lovely atmosphere throughout the establishment.
We can’t wait to come back already, and it hasn’t even been 24 hours!

Check in was swift and easy.
Room was very clean complete with tea and coffee. Clean towels were supplied along with shower gel. If you stay in Room 4.....there’s a very squeaky floorboard by the dressing table 😂
Due to covid regulations the room wasn’t cleaned by staff every day. Instead if we needed any extras we just asked at Reception.
We were very impressed with the food served. I would say all is homemade. We are there two nights and couldn’t find fault.
Breakfast was included in the price and although we couldn’t walk around and get our own juices and cereals, the staff were very accommodating.
We were really impressed by the way the staff handled guests with regard Covid regulations. All wore masks at all times and sanitiser was provided on all tables.
Lots of lovely walking routes nearby too.
Would definitely recommend!

So, thanks to covid we found ourselves all booked up but nowhere to go.As an insurance policy my wife found this little gem and booked it at the beginning of the year. I am really glad she did.We stayed 4 nights and had a great time. The hotel is located in a small village with beautiful views of the North Welsh countryside. The staff are friendly and made us very welcome. Our room was a little on the small side, but more than adequate for our needs. It was a bit tired looking and the bed not the most comfortable but not so bad as to spoil the short break. Due to Covid restrictions there was no cleaning service during our stay, but we were told that if we needed towels, more tea and coffee etc just ask so no real problem as the system worked well. Breakfast is excellent with a good choice and good quality ingredients being obvious. We did not have lunch as we were out exploring but the dinner menu is very good, well cooked, reasonably priced and very generous portions. This is a very popular place for good reason so booking is essential. Even when busy service was quick and efficient and you can tell that everything is cooked to order, so even a short wait is worth it. W e do not usually go to the same place twice, but if we get the chance we would definitely return to the Grapes. The location is great for exploring the Snowdonia area, close to the coast, friendly, with good food and great staff. If you are looking for a base in a peaceful, beautiful location with easy access to this special part of Wales look no further. Thanks for a great stay.

I left an initial review on this place but after getting a rather rude patronising and angry response from the owner thought I’d actually leave one with my real feelings.

I hate to leave negative feedback so really tried my best to be as positive as possible in my initial review but the truth is I was disappointed as soon as I walked into the place. No parking for guests, yes you are busy but surely you should save or reserve a couple of spaces for laying staying guests?

As for our room the plug socket next to bed was hanging off the wall the bathroom had scum round the shower screen and the whole accommodation needs a good tidy up. Yes I know the rooms are £70-£80 a night but I would struggle pay £50 for these rooms.

Food was ok, ribs looked like they had sat on a side for ten minutes before being served and yes the blue fly light in the restaurant is disgusting and coveted n flies. It’s not my responsibility to report a dirty fly screen that you can see from the other end of the restaurant.

My first review was kinder because I don’t like being negative snd the views are lovely from this place. But the angry and rude response to my much kinder review has made me revthink and tell the full extent to what needs improving. We actually tried to leave after one night ( saying we would like to see another part of Wales as we hate to offend) but they said they wouldn’t refund the next two nights so had to stay as we couldn’t afford to lose our money.

The younger waiting staff are friendly and the views are nice. They are the only two reasons to visit this place. The owner is clearly angry and unable to take constructive feedback so hopefully they will listen to critical honest feedback more kindly.

PLEASE FIND MY RESPONSE TO THEIR ORIGINAL REVIEW BELOW WHERE THEY HAVE SCORED US A THREE, STATING, GREAT LOCATION BUT ACCOMMODATION NEEDS ATTENTION. THE TRUTH BEHIND YOUR FEELINGS IS THE FACT THAT YOU WANTED TO LEAVE A DAY EARLY AND DID NOT WANT TO BE CHARGED FOR IT, WHICH WE REFUSED AS IT WAS PEAK SEASON. IN FUTURE, IF YOU ARE SO SENSITIVE TO STRAIGHT AND HONEST RESPONSES (NOT ANGRY?) DON'T BOTHER. I AM NOT A COMPUTER OR A CORPORATE YES MAN, THE ONLY PERSON ANGRY IS YOU AS YOU WANTED A FREE NIGHT! PATHETIC... Great location but accommodation needs some attention No parking available in the car park so had to park on the street outside for most of our visit. Breakfasts were nice but the blue light fly thing in the restaurant which was covered in dead bugs was disgusting and needs a good clean. Evening meals were ok, burgers were lovely but the smothered chicken not so much. The rooms were ok, bed very soft so if you like that then great. Bathroom fan was dirty and didn’t work so taking a shower made the room very hot as there was no ventilation. Good selection of teas coffees and hot chocolate in the room and views amazing from the room and the pub garden. The area was stunning but I would spend a bit more on accommodation next time as the rooms could do with a bit of attention so sadly wouldn’t return. Some of the staff were very friendly and helpful a couple were a bit less so and came across as maybe hospitality might not be their forte. Make FavoriteReport ReviewHow to Respond: Top TipsShare Response from999KD,Owner of The Grapes Hotel, Bar & Restaurant We have a free car park on site, yes free, the reason why you had to park on the street was because we are so popular with locals and tourists alike. Great that you enjoyed the breakfast, the blue light "thing" is doing it's job, killing flies, I've never been one to put my head so close to this and to make comment on it? Why didn't you report the fan, we have a maintenance person which would have seen to it. Pleased that you like the views and selection of teas and coffees and that the area was stunning. To summaries, you would not return because of a fly killer that works, you weren't a fan of the smothered chicken, fan not working and some staff not to your to your liking. Even though we have a free car park, nice breakfast, good evening food ( apart from the smothered chicken), good selection in your room, amazing views and pub garden and most staff friendly. Rather than being hell bent on finding faults, try to enjoy the positives.....

Stayed in one of the hotel’s cottages in early August with 2 teenagers; cottage smelled very stale on entry and was far too small to accommodate 3 people. The second room contained a sofa bed which meant that there was no real living space, given that that room was a bedroom. We had to search for bedding for the sofa, and when found, there was a large sheet for the quilt and no cover. When this was raised with the bar manager, he replaced the sheet with another large sheet! Tea and coffee facilities catered for 2 people - 2 glasses and 2 mugs; there was only 1 sachet of breakfast tea for a 3 night stay! There was a basket with what looked like all the leftover fruit teas from previous occupants. There was a used milk carton on the floor. When inspecting the mattress, it was covered in white bits and hair!! The bar manager promised to approach the owner about a discount but never returned. The morning we left, I caught up with the hotel owner, who appeared very put out by my complaint. There was no apology and his manner was hugely lacking. He simply did not want to be faced with a complaint on any level. Cramped cottage, that failed to cater for 2 people, let alone 3!

From the moment you came into the hotel our staff sensed that there was one motive, to get the accommodation free of charge. We admit there were very minor issues which we apologized for, sheets not big enough not enough glasses, but all addressed immediately. It felt that your efforts to finding faults were relentless, to gain extra points to bargain money off at departure. The cottages are small/snug and explains this on our web site including photographs. You approached the owner as you departed with your bag of negatives expecting a huge discount,he was not "put out" he asked what do you think should be given off seeing that everything that was raised had been addressed, you were taken aback as you could not come back with anything as everything had been addressed. Some customers are experts in this and I'm sure you have done this on many occasions, shame on you.

We stayed in cottage 2 for 2 nights of our week long tour of Wales. It does what it says on the tin - snug but has everything you need. Our bedroom was downstairs and our 14 year old son had the sofa bed upstairs, which he was more than happy about as he had a TV, wifi and fan! The shower was amazing, lots of hot water for all 3 of us. The cottage is next to the car park, but minimal noise both late night and early morning. There was a slight feeling of dampness downstairs and every now and then you'd get a whiff of damp, but considering places have been locked down on and off over the past 18 months it's not surprising. No sign of any mold mentioned in a previous review.
Breakfast was OK, not self service but choose what you like and it was brought to the table. Evening meals were very good 👍
Lastly, I have to commend all the staff for their hard work. Both evenings the bar and restaurant were rammed, they all worked their socks off. We foolishly did not book a table the 2nd night as weren't sure whether we would be eating at the hotel, but the lady behind the bar made sure we got seats.
Would definitely visit again.

We visited as a family after we heard that the Hotel had re opened and thought, oh we will stop after our walk along the beach for a nice Sunday lunch on our way back to Harlech .

We walked in and got little confused no explanation on rules of a one way system or who to talk too or walk up too ( granted it was busy ) there were no sanitation gell available as it was empty at the main door entrance!
And no one way system in place !

We eventually stopped one of the waitresses to ask what do we do and which way to walk in? After waiting we were escorted to a table and wait ! We waited no one approached up to ask if we wanted drinks or explain the protocol!

So one of us went to the bar to get some drink and was told we should of waited at our table for table service!! ( we had waited 15 ) and few staff walked past few times to go up to the food carvery stand for a chat and walk away!
I eventually called over a waiting staff and asked “ How do we go about ordering food and more drinks! “ oh I will be back now and “ we waited yet again and eventually given. Tickets to go up to the carvery to get out food! And told to wait again for the 6 people who were already to at the line and then we were to go up to get our food!

There was no one way system in place and once we got to the carvery stand all the cooked meat were all on same plate all together and all the meat were carved by the same knife by the lady that was serving us and she had blue gloves on and used her gloved hands to place the meat on too our plate ( them same gloves hands that had been touched by all the different cooked meant many many times while she was there serving All the customers !! ( cross contaminating ) them proceeds to picked up the Yorkshire pudding & placed it on too your plate it happens to every singe person who was served by her !! There were not even clear plastic disposable gloves available or any clear safe instructions on how to handle all the serving spoons so you could help your self to serve the vegetable on too your plate in a safe covid free manner !!

I must say there was 1 bottle of hand sanitizer gell at the beginning of the table BUT NONE OF the public were prompted or told to use it before your were handed your plate and use the spoons !!

NOT a Good start I am afraid my self and other members of my party did not eat the dinner and picked at it and we left quietly and walked out !!

Shame really as it’s a nice lovely pub / hotel been many many times before over the 30 odd years !
As I am a local and raised in Penllyn !

It will be a While before I go back I am afraid !

I'm reading this with my head in my hands, not sure whether to cry, laugh or send you a book for 8 year old's as to how to write properly. Lets start to when you arrived at the Grapes, you walked in and you were a little confused, it must be hard to walk into a pub with no instructions, do I walk in, on all fours, walk in backwards, a handstand maybe, a jiggle, so for this, we should have had instructions saying one foot in front of the other, eyes straight, shoulders back and that should take you in. Oh my good no one way system!!! we know that covid only follows us when we go in the wrong direction, the chances are you would have found the dead end to any one way system. Then you eventually arrived at the carvery unit, we have a 6 per table system, yes one way, with a bit of a delay because of the regulations. Before I comment on your next harrowing experience, we have a 5 star environmental health food hygiene certificate from Gwynedd Council, so I do think our staff know their hygiene regulations. All COOKED meats are together, carving all of the COOKED meats with the same knife, our chef uses blue food hygiene gloves, changed on a regular basis, this is not cross contamination as the meats are all cooked, you numptie. We do not use any clear gloves, what's your problem with the colour, do you need to see the servers hands through the gloves when being served!!? Then back to instructions on how to handle serving spoons. There was a hand sanitizer on the unit for you to use, along with some on the bars and tables, I'm considering employing a full time covid hand sanitizer security officer to show customers how to use these challenging objects along with signs to PROMPT the likes of yourselves to use them. Back to how to handle the spoons, where I'm from, you either use your right or left hand, spoon into the palm of the hand, close your grip and scoop what's available. Similar to your entrance, would you prefer to walk backwards, a jiggle by the carvery unity and maybe use your teeth or feet to hold your spoon? So you did not eat the food because you needed a one way system, clear gloves, signs to show you how to handle spoons and how to use hand sanitizers. You are brave to say you are local and from Penllyn, we have many genuine customers from Penllyn with common sense, I think the majority of them would be cringing for you. I'm so please that you will not be returning as I would personally carry you out, one way, wearing blue gloves, a spoon in one hand incase you needed more instructions spoon fed into you, and before putting you into the covid bin outside, as you would have obviously been infected because of the awful lack of instructions available to you. I would use a hand sanitizer on my own hands as I really do not need customers that usually shop in large major supermarkets, with thousands of customers daily, touching items, no hand sanitizer on every single isle, no one way systems, but I'm sure you're fine with this though.......

We stayed here for our UK honeymoon for one night, it was quite easy to find.
The food was amazing! You should deffinitley eat at the hotel, the breakfast was also rediculously good.
The rooms are generally tired and could do with a new paint and refurb however rooms and bathrooms are enormous. Location is good, we travelled 40 minutes to the Snowdon train and also walks were nearby.

We had the Grapes recommended to us from waiting staff in another pub in the area who use it themselves

It’s situated in a beautiful little village and has a great outdoor area including a decent sized climbing frame for kids.

We thoroughly enjoyed the outdoor environment with comfortable seating and had some tasty food - my wife is vegetarian and enjoyed the mushroom stroganoff whilst I had a minted lamb curry which was unusual but tasty.

The only negative was some fairly sour faced service behind the bar where they were pretty unhelpful to any request - answering things with a “no” rather than suggesting alternatives etc. A stark contrast in fact to the helpful bar staff elsewhere who recommended The Grapes to us in the first place.

I have to say the waiting staff were generally friendly and helpful, but our feeling on departure was mixed because of the bar service.

We would try it again though because of the good food and decent outdoor space for kids and dog

Went past The Grapes and thought it looked worth a visit and believe me we were not mistaken. We were greeted by the manageress who explained unfortunately they were fully booked but then she rearranged a reserved table to accommodate us, we then ordered our meals which were excellent good quality and value for money.
Highly recommended the whole experience and will definitely return
