Been to several onsens/ryokans and this one is my favorite. Far from main roads, in a small village, great authentic experience. Large room with sitting area, small and comfortable public bath and a small private one. The jewel in the crown is undoubtedly the dinner! I can't stop thinking of it ;) The 3 layers of futon set by the...

Yamaka is situated in a remote village above the Kiso valley, with views of impressive Mt Ontake. It is a calm and tasteful modern hotel, with large Japanese style rooms, with ensuite toilets, comfortable futons and free wifi. Unusually, the window screens are fitted with extra blackout panels so that daylight can be completely excluded. There is a small but...

We were lucky enough to enjoy a two night stay here on Walk Japan's Summer Nakasendo Way. This was the very best of all the ryokan style places that we visited. The staff was stellar, the food at all meals amazing, the rooms the most comfortable (en-suite!), and the village charming. It is the most modernized of the inns at...

Situated on a quiet village plateau, this inn stands out for its modernized refined decor with comfortable guest rooms(and importantly attached bathrooms). What makes it outstanding, is the superb banquet they serve for dinner, which can include horse sashimi. There is a smallish but well equipped on sen. Recommended

A wonderful inn with views of Mt. Ontake. We checked in early and were greeted with warm smiles and a delicious lunch. Our multi-course dinner tonight was outstanding including wagyu beef, fresh trout, in season vegetables and a particularly delicate roasted tea panna cotta. Do not miss this place if you are in the area.

From the warm welcome to the absolutely amazing food, this place was the nicest of the many traditional inns we visited on our recent trip to Japan. The rooms are very well appointed with private baths and the onsen is spotless, well stocked and the perfect end to day of walking in the highlands. The owner is a multi-talented man...
