Takaragawa Onsen is like an onsen from fairytale during the winter. It is so picturesque when snow falls.

The location is perfect being next to the river. Onsen with sounds of river flowing and water from Onsen was truly sublime under gentle falling snow.

The onsen water was good, but not the best .

The food at the onsen serves Japanese food in Western setting. It is buffet style with a basic kaseki dinner set.

The actual time at the hotel is however limited for one night over nighter. This is because hitel bus take guests back to station at 9am, after arriving late at like 4pm . It is best to stay at least two nights to truly experience the onsen.

I advise you not to make the huge mistake of staying there only one night. The Takaragawa Onsen Osenkaku experience must be enjoyed for at least a whole day: walking in yukata through the woods, passing from one hot tub to another, enjoying the culinary delicacies of the place, as every meal was a real discovery of kaiseki cuisine. I stayed at the ryokan in winter and I really loved the snow-white scenery, however I am sure the atmosphere can be just as magical in spring under a cascade of cherry blossoms or in autumn when the trees in the forest light up with bright red foliage. It really is one of the most beautiful spas in Japan and is easily accessible: from Tokyo station you can take the Joetsu shinkansen line that in about 70 minutes will take you to Jomo-Kogen station, from here you can comfortably take one of the shuttles made available free of charge by the ryokan, the drivers are really nice and friendly and traveling with them was an integral part of this unforgettable experience.

The rooms condition is very bad, the onsen experience is good! Is quite crowded sometimes and of course the room price is too expensive! It’s in a very scenic spot but is just everything is so old. I recommend you go elsewhere if you are looking for a better place with better accommodation.

First of all I must say, the location/onsen itself is amazing. Quite possibly one of the best in Japan, breathtaking views and also tattoo friendly. The food that was served to us on the other hand was a different story. Dinner was presented to us as a kaiseki meal, but instead of having everything coursed out like a normal kaiseki meal, it was all just strewn out on the table. Most of the food was clearly just frozen food thawed out and presented to us. Sashimi clearly smelled fouled, completely cold grilled fish, and duck meat that was chewy and tough like old boots. We decided to leave before the “Gohan” course of the meal which was the only thing coursed to us at the end of the meal. Our server asked us why we were leaving so soon as to which we told her that the meal was basically inedible. She responded with “I’m sorry” instead of trying to elevate the situation and give us something a bit more satisfactory, almost as if this is a commonality for her. With my 20+ years in the hospitality business I would be the first to tell you that you never apologize for anything because it’s clearly admitting that your food/service is sub pay at best. Later in the evening I spoke to some Thai tourists (I lived in Thailand for 2 years) asking them what they though of the food, and without any sort of hesitation told me they thought it was terrible. My wife, who is Japanese also spoke to some Japanese tourists that also said similar things but were a bit more reserved due to the culture nuances of Japanese people in general. The following day we made a complaint to the manager at the front desk about our experience and basically told us the same thing that our server the previous night told us “I’m sorry” and even went as far as telling us that other people have complained in the past and that “he would inform the kitchen of this matter. No comps for anything, no “we’ll make a better experience for you the next time on us” just “sorry” and basically shrugged his shoulders. Despite the amazing location or not, my wife and I spent lots of money and our valuable time to visit this place expecting an incredible experience. Needless to say it’s highly doubtful we would ever come back unless it’s complimentary on the house. Bring your own food, or go to another onsen

Spending a weekend at Takaragawa was such a unique and authentic getaway, but it was the hospitality of the staff that truly exceeded every expectation. From the front desk to the chef and waitstaff at the restaurant, we were treated like family in that ineffable manor you just have to experience first hand. I also felt the dinners were extremely delicious, inspired and found myself trying to google multiple items we tasted so that we can attempt to recreate them back in Chicago. We've often dined at Michelin star restaurants - so I know good food - this was probably the best food we ate during our entire trip in Japan.

The modern building when you arrive looks really ugly. Most of the rooms do not have a bathroom especially if you are staying in the older section. Rooms are extremely tired but cleaned. Bathrooms are ugly but still good shower pressure. The food is excellent and the open onsens are spectacular. It’s great for couples as they are coed and people with tattoos are allowed. Go there for the unbelievably beautiful setting not the hotel.

I should believe some comments in here. 😔 This onsen already turn to be a place for tourists and the room is quite old. Onsen has a good view but crowded with hotel guests. Service and food were just ok. If you want to get japanese onsen experience, better go somewhere else.

While the outdoor Onsen baths are fabulous, this is an aged resort, old and it shows. The noise from the outdoor building works was also a negative. Made for relaxing after the Onsen impossible. Nude bathing is also no longer permitted and everyone is forced to wear fetching brown wraps. But the red wine on offer was great!

We had a very enjoyable time in this outdoor onsen. It’s in a very scenic spot, and the trails wind their way down to the different baths. I started in the woman’s section but then worked my way around all of them. Including the mixed gender ones. 1200 yen gets you access and a weird swimming costume.

Beautiful and delicious! The hot springs and our room (in the old part, the 3. Building) was so amazing that we are speeachless! It is more beautiful than on the pictures ! And walking around in the traditional yukata was supercool and stylish! The food is really good and served in a topical Japanese way. The only thing that was not totally perfect was that there was dust and spiderwebs some places (but not the rooms). We love it, we will come back of we have an opportunity again!

Haloo.. are there vegetarian dishes available?
Answer from Departure651717
If you have chosen a plan for the set couse dinner(kaiseki), it is very difficult to arrange a vegeterian menu. Please select a buffet dinner plans please. If it is difficult to identfy the plans, enquire at the hotel directly in advance please.
