The hotel was very traditional, if a little dated. We had a private bath on our balcony which really made it for us and the location was stunning and very peaceful. However, we were really disappointed with the food which was pretty bland and uninteresting. The hotel staff speak very little English but it was fairly easy to get by.

We visited Kakimotoya during a sakura trip in the spring a couple years ago. We had been to Nara on another trip several years ago and wanted our friends to experience it as well as the ryokan, kaiseki traditional Japanese inn cultural experience. Except for the inclement weather, we were not disappointed as the ryokan is located away from the noise and commotion of a large city. The staff was exceptionally gracious, helpful, and, of course, polite. The only distraction was the music box playing western music during dinner which would have been slightly more enjoyable with traditional Japanese music. The food was varied, well-prepared, and exquisitely presented (see pictures), and there was no rush. The traditional Japanese rooms were surprisingly comfortable - even sleeping on mats. Having an outdoor hot-tub from which to view the mountains added to the relaxing experience. More
