We visited in November and the colours of the trees had to be seen to be believed. We left our main luggage in Kyoto and took the absolute minimum to Koyasan. Caught bus to Kyoto train station. The Shinkansen to Shin-Osaka and sub-way to Namba. Followed by Nankei train to Koyasan (Gokurakubashi station). Connected by 5 minute cable car to...

The journey to Koyasan is beautiful and this town is a special place to visit. After some sightseeing we returned to the Ryokan which is really a very nice lodging for visiting the numerous temples. Our rooms were spacious and comprised two main rooms, a dressing area, bathroom and deep bath. Surrounding the two principal rooms was a corridor which...

We really enjoyed the journey from Osaka to Koya-San by train, cable car and bus - it's a slow climb through forests and increasingly smaller towns for the most part and incredibly scenic! Our decision to stay at Sojiin was mostly based on wanting a ryokan-type experience and it didn't disappoint on that account. The landscape and building design are...

My husband and I spent an idyllic night at Soji-in Shukubo, a handsome inn within a temple for visiting pilgrims. It's located on a quiet temple-lined street within easy walking distance of the main street. We were expecting something a bit more basic and were pleasantly surprised by the luxury. The sitting room near the entry is opulent, featuring Chinese...

This absolutely great riokan is located inside a temple and you are served by monks. We had a suite which will leave us unforgettable memories: we could sit in a meditative atmosphere, watching at the superb temple garden. The multi-course gourmet vegan menu, served at (early) dinner time, is a firework for your eyes, palate and nose; it is impossible...

This is the highest priced monastery accommodation in Koyasan. We thought we would splurge & enjoy a "monastery" experience. The room was large with our own toilet & basin. They have a men's & women's bath down the hall & an elevator. We arrived early by train from Osaka so had to leave our luggage as check in is 3:00pm....

This was exactly what we expected in terms of accommodation. The rooms were exceptionally clean, as were the bathrooms. The real highlight though was dinner, where the monks served up a delicious, multiple course, traditionally Japanese Buddhist vegan meal

We spent two nights at Soji'in in early December. We booked one of their larger deluxe rooms, which is similar to what you would find in a good modern ryokan. We had several spacious tatami rooms, a large private bathroom with a private soaking tub, onsen-style shower and wash station, a lovely and well-lit vanity room with a sink, hair...

Staying at a temple Ryokan is a special experience. I would recommend it to all Japan travellers. The location of the temple is in the middle of Koyasan. You walk easily to all important places. Taking into account the number of temple Ryokans that are located in Koyasan, this must be the case for most of them. A young monk...

We stayed one night in a Sakura no ma deluxe room, which was housed in its own building adjoining the main lodge. There were 2 large rooms separated by a beautiful sliding screen, a toilet & a private bathroom with a very large cedar tub. The main room (bedroom) faced the beautiful main zen garden, while the sitting room faced...
