I do not understand the negative opinions of some of the reviews here. Our host was so kind, the room was large with tea making facilities, and the breakfast was something we had been dreaming about, scrambled eggs, tomato, toast and fruit. Yes there are cats, which is clearly stated, they are nowhere near the rooms. If you stay in...

And we couldn't wait to leave this accommodation. Lucky for us we found the island such a great place to visit and explore. The room and accommodation was shocking. We stayed in the separate house must have been 'western style'. 2 single blow up mattresses, that were incredibly uncomfortable, bedding that was dusty and old. The bath towels smelt like...

The landlady speaks excellent English compared to other locals, charges are quite cheap 4000-4500yen per person. other than that you'd get what you'd expect from a cats-owning-traditional-Japanese-building-turned-into hostel. Yes there're cats in the building but you will be warned when you make a reservation. And the rooms are kept clean, no cats allowed and there're like 3or4...

Kuraya is a simple guest house and very homey. The hostess speaks great English, makes a lovely breakfast and is contentious to put mosquito coils to repel the bugs. She can also recommend a very tasty vegetarian lunch if that's what you're looking for. It's a sweet place to stay that's very central to all of the art houses. Another...

A real enjoyable Japanese experience! The owner -Kurya-San -was very friendly ,helpful and gave excellent advise. She has perfect command of English. All you could dream of : giant room with tatami floor and immaculate premises in the heart of the interesting House-Project district of Naoshima. Good privacy with excellent rest for body and soul. Delicious breakfast according to our...

I'm very confused by the good reviews on this page. The owner has several large cats and she tries to keep them in her private space, however there is no doubt that cats were in the guest rooms. I could not stop sneezing and the smell of urine and presence of cat hairs was awful. Owner also allows birds to...

My girlfriend and I wanted to visit Naoshima while backpacking through Japan, and we didn't know where to stay. She called the Gallery Inn Kuraya and the host was wonderful! We stayed for one night in the traditional room and had a delicious breakfast in the morning. The room came with toothbrushes and toothpaste, a private bathroom, a TV, and...

As part of our four week trip in Japan we visited Naoshima, known as an island of art. We decided to stay at the Kuraya. What was our impression of this place? Location: Naoshima is an island with different art musea and projects scattered over the entire island. From Japan mainland a ferry leaves for Naoshima island to either Miyanoura...

We were booked through our Agency at the Gallery Inn Kuraya for one night. After reading the comments on TripAdvisor tension was already high. As it turned out, all those bad comments on TripAdvisor are 100% true. As you enter the messy House, you’re standing in front of an open indoor-cat-room, and the smell of those cats droppings is present...
