We stayed just one night in this paradise but I wished to have stayed more!
We had the Hanoki room, with a private onsen outside; it was expensive but really worth every yen. It was a big traditional Japanese room with shower and bath in...More
We took the bus from Fukuoka at about 12:40pm, which took about three hours. If you are travelling by bus from Fukuoka it is best to book your ticket as soon as you can, as they sell out. The ticket machines in Tenjin Bus station...More
We stayed with our two teenage children at ryokan Sanga for two nights. It was easy to catch the highway bus from Hakata station to Kurokawa Onsen (2.5 hrs) and the shuttle came to pick us up. As soon as you arrive you feel instantly...More
We caught the direct bus at 0930 from Hakata station about 2500 yen each. It was about 3hrs on a comfy bus. We organised at the station for our return tickets. Check in isn't until 1500 so a mini can collected us from the bus...More
A highlight of our trip to Japan. We called the Ryokan from the bus stop on the main road and they sent their mini-van to collect us and dropped us in the village until our check-in time later that day. They took our bags with...More

Howdy mate - Sanga Onsen in Kurokawa is easily accessed by JR train from Kumamoto or Fukuoka using a JR pass. Simply ride the lovely red train to Mt. Aso station & the courtesy buses pick you up from the station & deliver you to your Onsen.
Two points of interest for me were:
1. The switch back railway system to help the train make it's way up the steep climb to Mt. Aso. I'm not train buff but even I found that to be very interesting; and
2. The amazing scenery as the train winds it's way through the lovely rurals of Kyushu towards Mt. Aso. Stunning!!
Food tip - As you depart the train & before you cross the line to the exit, there's a magical little bistro that I later saw featured on NHK TV about Mt. Aso. The food, ambiance & views make it a 'must visit'.
Instead we trotted across to the station, checked how long before the shuttle bus arrived and ate at the station Udon shop. We didn't know that just 20 meters away was this amazing cafe. Damn!!!
Helpful people - The JR people & tourist information lady at Mt. Aso station are all very helpful and will assist with timetable, directions or what ever else they can. Great guys.
I just wish they had of told me about the bistro/cafe on the other side of the railway tracks. Oh well I'll just have to make a return visit & do it better. ;-)
