My family stayed in the Sinmeikan for two nights in late November. It locates at the centre of the small charming Kurokawa town. The staff warmly welcomed us at the carpark, and they were very friendly to my young kids. Some of the Ryokan staff could command good English and courteously introduce the Ryokan facilities to us. Thanks to Mr....

You can throw away shyness here to enjoy your onsen experience. In Kurokawa Onsen , try knowing their history, take a breath and keep yourself in a slow pace. There are several wonderful onsens here and also many wonderful onsens in other ryokans which you can find suitable for you. Some "working holiday" here can help those people cannot speak...

This famous, charming ryokan is located at the very heart of the town. It is located just alongside the Kurokawa river, and the bridge to access the hotel is a touristic spot itself. We only used their bath facilities and enjoyed a lot. Although very rustic, it's a unique place. The baths are partially gender-separated. There is a women's bath...

Kurosawa Onsen has been one of the destinations where loads of Japanese people adore to stay over nights but it is known to be expensive and inaccessible. We decided finally to give it a go and chose Shinmeikan: for its amazing historical establishment and reputable Onsen areas. From arrival to departure, we could not fault them a thing. We already...

I couldn't have asked for a better experience. The food was amazing and service was excellent. The staff spoke no English but were extremely helpful and couldn't do enough for us. I loved both the hotel and the village and the cave onsen was an added highlight. I can't wait to return and enjoy a few relaxing days there strolling...

This place represents my idea of perfect onsen experience. First of all Kurokawa is a beautiful town. I love everything about it. Unlike Yufu and Beppu, everything is more concentrated so there is a great onsen town atmosphere. The streets are tiny but pretty. People walking on the street in their yukata. I enjoyed Shinmeikan very much. The building fits...

At first sight it was as pretty as one could imagine, period building sited alongside the river and connected by a bridge walkway to the access road in the heart of town. Then the disappointment, we were assigned a room in the annex across from the main building; a non-descript modern building blocked by another building. The room was ok...

“If you can afford it, stay in the older Honkan (the main building) although Shinkansen (new annex) is cheaper and cleaner. You can experience real Yu-ya (hot spa specialist) experience.”
