Travellers like me and my husband do not ask too much when we are on holiday, all we need is a relaxed, clean place to stay, time to know the local culture which includes food, and good customer service from staff. Rainforest lodge Sukau delivered all of these and more.

We were met by our very reliable and friendly guide - Britney. We think that we were very lucky to have Britney as our guide because he is not only reliable but he is also very knowledgeable of the local flora and fauna. Britney did not only gave us important information about Sukau environment but he also made sure that we remember our holiday. We did not bring our own binoculars but Britney made sure we have access to one which made wild life watching enjoyable. We also had conversations with Britney about the Sabah history and culture which was great! This is what we call excellent customer service wherein a staff like Britney is one step ahead in making sure that the guests enjoy and learn something during their holiday.

The rooms are clean, the whole complex is jungle perfect. We love the jungle noise which includes wake up call by local macaques and the food is simple Malay food but actually really good! The activities were tailored to make sure that guests are properly exposed to the life by the river side and the jungle but also enough time to relax. The whole time we were at Sukau rainforest lodge was fun, relaxing and very memorable.

Highly recommended place to stay!

Much appreciated,
Mykee & Ian

Most guests arrive at the Lodge by boat travelling along the Kinabatatang River. The welcome is efficient and friendly. There is an induction meeting where you are given the keys to the rooms and some general information. We stayed in one of the Borneo villas overlooking the rainforest. The room was spacious with high windows so you could see the night sky. A welcome touch was the soft drinks and ice cold beers in the fridge! Each day two river cruises were included in the room rate. One in the morning and one in the evening. Life jackets are provided. Guests can also attend a free wild life lecture after supper or pay to go on a night cruise. Other cruises are available at an additional cost. Meals were at a fixed time both for lunch and dinner and were served buffet style. Usually we are not that fond of buffets but there was a good selection for lunch and dinner

We decided to stay at this place as National Geographic had rated it amongst the most unique ecolodges in the world, and we certainly weren’t disappointed. The place is gorgeous and from the airport pickup where we met our very affable and knowledgeable guide Jonathon, through the various excursions- to Sepilok and the Kinabatangan River we were given a wonderful experience. The place is run with a strong commitment to ecologically sound principles: bamboo straws, non-polluting detergent etc. The place runs smoothly and yet has a very personal touch. The food was delicious and the head chef, Teddy, made it a point to chat with the guests after each feast. Highly recommend.

I made a fairly last-minute decision to take a trip to Borneo in September, 2022 and contacted several lodges on the Kinabatangan. I received a prompt response from Hanif at Borneo Eco Tours, who handles the bookings for Sukau Rainforest Lodge. Hanif has been a pleasure to work with, I always received prompt, helpful responses throughout the booking process.
Upon checking in at my hotel in Sandakan, I had a note confirming the pickup time the following morning. I thought the time was a bit odd, 8:10am, but it made perfect sense the next morning when 6 buses full of tourists all departed at 8am. Jimmy, my excellent guide from SRL and I easily found each other after the hordes had departed.
We toured Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre and the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre, and after lunch split up into groups transferring by land or boat to SRL. I highly recommend the boat transfer. SRL apparently does something I haven’t seen at similar lodges, the group that transferred by boat became the “cohort group” that took boat tours with our same guide Jimmy each day.
Upon arrival at Sukau Rainforest Lodge, we were greeted by staff, and had the daily schedule explained before being given keys to our villas and shown where they were. Bags were delivered straight to the rooms. The villas were very nicely appointed, while I wouldn’t call them luxury, but they are large, modern, and private, each villa building ( 2 separate villas) being set back in the jungle. They are equipped with both air conditioning and ceiling fans; I only used the fan during my stay. The bathroom was large, and had a huge, tiled shower. Rooms are decorated with local art and have a nice porch facing into the jungle. All the windows are fitted with screens, and I never saw a mosquito or other insect in my room.
Jimmy kept us very busy that first day, after settling into the rooms, we met up for our first afternoon wildlife spotting boat trip. Within the first 15 minutes, Jimmy put us on Hornbills, Proboscis Monkeys and Macaques. After that trip, we had dinner, and then all opted for a night cruise, where we spotted numerous birds, a crocodile, and some other wildlife.
Meals are served buffet style, and all had a good variety of choices. Typically, there was at least one fish, chicken, and beef dish, as well as rice and noodle choices. The food was good, plentiful, and exactly what I expected at a resort of this type. Of note, the coffee was excellent, and available before dawn each morning, which is important to me. Meals are served in a large, comfortable riverfront restaurant.
I’m planning a return trip for early this summer with my wife and daughter. I highly recommend SRL and will likely combine 3 nights there with one of the other properties managed by Borneo Eco Tours.

We had very high expectations, which were vastly exceeded. I don’t even know where to begin. The rooms are wonderful, they keep you very well fed with delicious food, the guides are all knowledgeable and pleasant and fun, and the wildlife... We saw the Borneo Big 5 (rhinoceros hornbill, elephant, orangutan, proboscis monkey, crocodile) as well as a gibbon and five monkey species and more beautiful bird species than we could count or list. My one piece of advice would be to take advantage of all the different activities they offer. We did night cruises, Gomantong caves and a jungle trek and each one was eye opening. My fiancée and I couldn’t have enjoyed our stay more. Really, so deeply grateful to have spent a few nights at Sukau. 10/10

We stayed in two lodges on the river; this one was a little bigger / more commercial, but still beautiful. There are several additional excursions available, but do inquire - most come at an extra fee.

We stayed in a villa, which was nice. No one was in the unit next to us, so we had a lot of privacy on the balcony. Lots of wildlife in / around the villas as well.

Our guide (Fernando) was awesome. The wildlife at this part of the river was a little more scarce, but he sought out the best of everything for us!

Whilst Sukau Rainforest Lodge has enormous potential, the staff and lodge, per se, is not quite prepared for the post-Covid influx of tourists. When one pays ‘top dollar’ one does not expect no hot water in the shower, a dirty towel and a bed made without the inner doona. So for the first night, we slept under 2 sheets!!!
We raised this with the staff who noted that ‘someone had switched off the hot water system in error and someone had forgotten to insert the doona into the cover!

Be that as it may, the trips down the river were fantastic and the optional tour of looking for Pygmy elephants was well worth it.

The guides were great.

Would I stay there again? I’m not that sure I would!!!!

Hi Lydia, Thank you for taking the time to write to us. Oh dear, we sincerely apologize of how that would have affected your overall experience with us. As many of our staff pre-COVID could not return, we did have to resort into getting a number of new hire. Thank you for pointing it out, we take it that we need to do our part in ensuring our staff are trained and ready to welcome guests to our lodge. Should you change your mind and would like to visit us in the future, we'd be happy to accommodate you. Best wishes!

My husband and I just stayed at Sukau Rainforest Lodge, almost exactly as they reopened again. We cannot recommend it enough, this place is spectacular from the lodge itself, to the passion of the staff to the opportunity to spot genuine wildlife. It’s been a once in a lifetime experience and we cannot wait to come again.

I’m also 4 months pregnant so can also vouch that the lodge and the excursions are completely fine for expectant mothers. It’s a 2 hour drive from Sandakan airport to the Jetty. Our driver Abdul met us at the airport and drove very carefully along the occasionally bumpy roads. From the Jetty it’s then a 5 minute boat ride to the lodge along the Kinabatangan River. The ride is extremely smooth - smoother than walking!

The lodge is set in a picturesque location along the river and is a perfect combination of genuinely exotic, authentic and comfortable. Mas was very helpful with checking us in and explaining the program for our stay. The rooms are comfortable, spacious and air conditioned. As with any stay in the jungle, you can expect some small critters and a bit of dampness but we believe that adds to the charm and authenticity of the experience.

The restaurant is at the main building by the river. At the moment it’s set buffet menus for the different meals. (You can inform of any dietary requirements before your stay.) Normally served as a buffet but due to Covid SOPs the staff brought the dishes to our table. The staff were so welcoming, friendly and attentive. The food is okay, it could be a bit more expressive or have more options but considering the remote location, we thought it was fine. The soups are excellent! And fresh fruit is served as a dessert with every meal.

The highlight of our trip was our excursions with our guide Lee. We did the morning cruise and the afternoon cruise. We were very fortunate to spot 4 out of the big 5 in Borneo (the Pygmy elephants were a bit shy this time :)). Of course nature is unpredictable but Lee was superb - he spotted wildlife everywhere and shared his vast knowledge in a very engaging way. There is also a complimentary jungle walk along the decking that goes around the lodge (which you can also walk along at any time). We spotted Proboscis monkeys on one of our strolls and apparently Orangutans and even the elephants stroll by sometimes!

Just an all round incredible experience. Thank you to the Sukau team for such a memorable adventure!

Hello iamdoofy! First of all, can we just say how happy and appreciative we are to receive such a kind review from you on your recent stay with us. It's been such a long time since we've been able to open our doors to the public again, be it partially, we're nevertheless happy to receive guests. It took some time for us to restart operations again, as it was important for us to ensure a safe environment to both guests and staff. From reviewing and improving our health and safety protocols to ensuring all of our staff are fully vaccinated and are fit for work, we're relieved that it paid off! We're glad to hear that everything on your trip went smoothly and even got the chance to spot wildlife while you were there. We'll make sure to relay the kind message to our amazing Sukau team! Feel free to share photos of your recent trip with us on Facebook or Instagram or any social media of any kind. We hope to welcome you back here soon ☺ Stay safe!

The absolute highlight of our trip to Sabah! We had 3 nights here with a total of 5 Riverboat tours and Speedboat transfer and picked up from our accommodation in Sepilok, coach transfer to Sandakan with buffet lunch before beginning the 2hr30min journey to the lodge. We were extremely fortunate to have Lee as our guide for our trip and his extensive knowledge and good humour made our trip so special. He always went above and beyond in talking to each family or couple and his keen eye meant we saw Crocodiles, Hornbills, Kingfishers, Proboscis Monkeys, Silver Langurs, Red Langurs, pig tailed and long tailed Macaques, and the highlight Pygmy Elephants crossing the river. He also made sure we all saw the Orangutans when they visited around the Lodge and was so patient with everyone, answering questions always with good humour. We had the Judy Dench Villa which made it very special for our wedding anniversary! Filtered water was replenished every day for our use and the air conditioning was very appreciated! The food was plentiful and Chef Teddy made sure that my Vegetarian Husband always had a tofu or Soya option. Every single member of staff works very hard to make sure it’s a memorable trip and the talk about the aims of Borneo Eco Tours and the training they provide to local people as well as the Conservation Projects they’re involved in is well worth listening too. Other lodges are available but I got the strong sense that Sukau takes its responsibility to the community and the natural environment as it’s guiding principle. I recommend it completely and would love one day to return.

Exceptional jungle location and five star experience. The resort is built right on the edge of the river in the jungle with the most beautiful walkways, lodge area, restaurant, and rooms. The rooms are clean and bug-free (how?!?) with great AC. There is a pool for free time and the staff from the restaurant servers to the boating tour guides were amazing and professional. You are never wondering what you need or where you are going. The daily buffets were great with a huge variety of food. All the water is filtered, bread is homemade and they have chef stations at every meal. The view of the river while eating your meals is spectacular. We see why this is named one or Nat Geo’s most unique hotels in the world. It was amazing!
