let me begin by saying that this is an absolutely lovely ,comfortable , value for money hotel. it is located across the river with wonderful views of gengenbach, slightly away fom the gengenbach oldtown centre (but a very easy walk) , the rooms are spacious ,the beds comfortable, breakfast adequate.in short this hotel has everything going for it except,it has the worst reception staff in the world.there is a lady called frau martin and I would advise future travellers to this property to stay clear of her.she is cold un cooperative and has absolutely no idea how one should conduct oneselves in the hospitalitly industry. she caused me immense discomfort in many ways . firdt of all she was always making faces rite thru the 4 days I stayed there. secondly I just needed a siple thing done like calling one of the mobile companies in Germany and getiing my pin for the sim card. I don't speak german or would have done it myself, she made such a ig deal out of it and in the end did not do it and even misguided me that it cannot be done on the phone . ultimately I got someone else to help my from a shop and got it done on the phone.now to some more serious matters. I had a booking here only for 2 days and I wanted to extend for another 2 days as I absolutely loved the hotel (inspite of our dear friendly lady) she tells me there is no chance of extending as they are totally sold out this was at 8 pm before the day I had to check out. so I packed up all my stuff and was ready to check out next day after breakfast. I saw a more approachable lady at the reception and asked her if I could extend. and surprise surprise she said of course I could.as there was room in the hotel. as if this was not enough frau martin caused further trouble for me (I am sure intentionally) since I was cxhecking out early on 24th dec moring I went to settle my bill on 23rd night itself.i was utterly dismayed to see frau martin at the reception (I suspect the feelings were mutual) I requested her to do the billing and as I never check I paid the 576 euroes by amex card which she asked for without a thought and went to my room.just by intuition I checked the bill once in my room and no surprise frau martin had charged me 42 euroes extra. I went down and pointed out her error which she was not willing to admit for atleast 10 minutes.then I gave her the day by day break up and showed my booking copies to her again.she cancelled the transction and charged my card again for the correct amount.as my account is in rupees amex charged me quite a sizeable amount as foreign exchange difference which I had to pay for no fault of mine. thre was another lady at the reception when I checked out,and just becose I forgot the card key inb the room slot she gave me such a dirty look as if I had commited a serious crime. all aspects of this hotel are very very good, even the price is definetly worth the hotel. would highly recommend staying here if you can stay clear of frau martin. I hope the management realizes that they truly have a really nice hotel and should make the most of it by keeping appropriate staff who are suited for the job. the hotel has an indoor pool and freee wifi which works pretty well. the room also has an heater and a clothes drier in the bathroom. I have travelled all over Europe but never seen staff which goes out of its way to cause problem to its guests. since no other guests have seemed to complained about this earliear reviews I suspect there may be an racial shade to this treatement as we are from india.

We stayed here for two nights in September. The hotel is fine, but it lacks character and could do with some renevations - it looks quite nineties inside and there were stains on the carpets and walls (in our room), it didn't really feel like a 4 star hotel. Staff were really nice and friendly though and helped us look up train schedules etc.

We got a room on the top floor, it was spacious and had a good balcony. Again though, the rooms could do with some updating. It felt a little bit like an old peoples home or something. We went to the pool that day as well which is quite small, but the hotel wasn't that busy so it was fine.

We quite liked the location of the hotel, it's not right in the centre of Gengenbach but it's just a short walk away. We didn't go to the restaurant in the evening, but breakfasts were nice.

This isn't a bad hotel or anything, it just didn't quite live up to our expectations. This hotel would be so much better if they just updated it a little bit inside.

We stayed at the Schwarzwald Hotel which is situated on the opposite bank of the River Kinzig to the main town of Gengenbach. It is a short walk into the town, either across a nearby footbridge (no steps) or the roadbridge a bit further away. The footbridge also takes you to the rail station. The Hotel was chosen by our tour Company Treyn Holidays by Rail and we think it was an excellent choice. The public areas are spacious as are the rooms.Everything was very clean. Many of the staff spoke good English and were eager to please. The food served was of high quality and good variation/choice. We had a room which overlooked the entrance to reception and found it peaceful. Others in our group who had rooms above reception overlooking a car park were disturbed by delivery lorries in the early hours. Gengenbach is a lovely small town with very pretty and interesting architecture. Local wine is excellent. A good base for touring the Black Forest and not too far to Strasbourg for a day in the city.

Booked the Wellness package which included 2 hour per person treatment, 2 nights stay with breakfast, one evening “ romantic dinner” and another evening 3 course dinner. Wellness was amazing, very relaxing and worth the trip. However all the rest was poor. First of all given the location and facilities the hotel is overpriced due to the fact that a lot of companies do seminars here. There are no double beds only single beds. When booking and on arrival we mentioned that we will celebrate my wife’s birthday but all we got was a cold “happy birthday” at checkin. First time we stayed in a hotel for birthday and received no compliment. No little cake, no wine(although this is wine region), no flowers, nothing nada! The romantic dinner was poor as the menu is nothing special, it’s just four courses from the normal menu which anyone can order, soup-salad-main-dessert. Just table decoration(two plastic hearts and fake flower petals), but then why pay extra??? Plus we were seated next to really loud drunk company group. The second dinner was more delicious. Breakfast was also good, enough options and fresh.
Overall do NOT recommend staying at this hotel. DaySpa is recommended if you are in the region and need relaxing.

The hotel was signposted and very easy to find, especially with a badly behaving sat-nav!

The receptionist was polite and attentive.

The room was large and clean with a comfortable bed.

The sleep quality was good, but there is no air-conditioning in the room, this wasn't a problem for us because it is so quiet there, you can sleep with the balcony door wide open.

The bar staff were particularly helpful.

The breakfast was well stocked, tasty, and, well, excellent, even for Germany.

We would love to go back there soon, but unfortunately need to work for a while now because I have used all my holidays!

Stayed this past weekend in the Schwarzwald Hotel. It was more than I expected. Rooms were spacious, clean and had a huge balcony. The location was close enough to the town. It was a short walk over a pedestrian bridge and then across the rail track. It was everything you need to enjoy exploring Gengenbach. We travelled with our Yorkshire Terrier and they were very accomodating. No extra fee and the staff loved playing with her. Very pet friendly.

we had a 4 night stay in Gengenbach , and on arrival had been upgraded to an apartment suite , which was huge. The suites are on the rear of the hotel so the trade off is the balcony does not look out onto the town . Schwarzwald hotel is a short walk along the river to the town gates. There was a great gym and a swimming pool and sauna. breakfasts were off a good standard. The hotel had free wifi in our room and supplied us with a Konas card which gave us free public transport for the duration of our stay.

This is a clean and comfortable hotel. Our room was a good size and nicely furnished, although better pillows would have been appreciated, and despite booking a double room we got two (very small) beds. In my experience this is pretty standard for Germany.

The staff were very friendly and helpful and the location is just a few minutes walk from the extremely picturesque town of Gengenbach. Breakfast (which was included in our room rate) included everything you'd expect of a German buffet. We didn't dine at the hotel but did enjoy some excellent German and Italian food in the town. The bar staff are young, numerous and entertaining in their lack of cocktail making experience (which is hardly an issue with decent Pilsner on tap). We didn't use the spa so can't comment on that.

This isn't luxurious accommodation but it exceeded expectations for the rate and we'd stay there again if we were in the area.

This hotel is in a very convenient spot, just a short walk across the river from the town. Everywhere was spotlessly clean, inside and outside, the décor pleasant and the staff very helpful. All the young staff worked hard and kept tables tidy and were pleasant dealing with requests. There was a good choice at the breakfast buffet and it was kept topped up. Staff were very vigilant and always available. We were a group so dinner was a limited choice. The quality seemed to go downhill as the days went on but it was adequate. Although we'd ordered in advance there were still a few muddles but they were sorted out. There seemed to be a slight lack of organisation in that department. The bedrooms all had balconies which were a good size. As they were covered you could still sit out if it rained. The bedroom and bathroom were very clean. There was a pleasant courtyard where you could have a drink and other diners could eat. I would have liked to give the hotel 5 stars, but for the fact the food wasn't as good by the end of the week as it had been at the beginning. Still a lovely hotel and would be more than happy to stay in again.

The hotel staff were nice both at the front desk and in the dining room for breakfast. Breakfast was pretty good; with free unlimited coffee. The room was OK; although the pillows need to be replaced. The bathroom and shower were pretty good. The location was only a ten-minute walk from the beautiful downtown area and the Wi-Fi was very fast and included in the price. This hotel needs an update and there was a distinct odor in our hallway; partially due to the highly-chlorinated swimming pool directly below it. Otherwise this hotel would get a 5-star rating from us.
