Most of the staff were great. But the manager, Alister, was curt and unfriendly. In fact he angrily pointed out that he had handed in his notice in frustration about staff problems. Like I should be thankful he was there at all. A good manager should be friendly and leave personal problems at home. Remember, customers are on a break from their worries. They don’t want to share yours. Last orders in the garden at 10 pm on a Friday night and no food service outside. Residents finishing drinks outside were told to keep noise down at 10:15 pm. The outside pizza oven they rave about is never open. They don’t have enough staff. I’ve stayed here before and it was good. Very disappointing this time around. Hopefully, things will improve as it’s a lovely hotel/bar. Fluffy towels and comfy beds. Good food. Good selection of drinks. Good internet. Nice historical area. However, a disappointing stay due to unfriendly and inept management.

Stayed in a dog friendly room to break up a journey from Scotland to Gloucestershire. It was a hot July day. The room was nice enough but the only window was tiny and high up. It was far too hot to get a decent sleep in.this room. Thankfully was able to cool down the following day in superb dog friendly accommodation elsewhere. Next time I travel south with my dog I.will look elsewhere.

The first time I've eaten here in over a year and sad to say my meal was very average. Slow braised beef and wild mushroom cannelloni with a bechamel sauce. There was no mushrooms in there. It has obviously been reheated to within an inch of it's life leaving it dry and stale. The beef would have been really tasty when fresh but it had become dry and chewy. The garlic ciabatta on the side was so over done I couldn't actually bite into it. The side of fries I ordered were delicious though! My friend ordered the chicken and what a difference in both quality and presentation to my food. It looked fresh, smelt amazing and she reported it was really tasty. Perhaps bad ordering paired with too long in the microwave. The interior and the beer garden is really lovely so will likely return but just for drinks next time.

After struggling to find somewhere to eat on a Sunday evening, found this little gem. Bookings had to be made on line, which we did and managed to get a table. Food and service was excellent, staff very professional and helpful. Can recommend the crispy beef salad ! Would highly recommend and will definitely go back.

Great garden and fast service but sadly the food was a bit of a let down. Forgot the coleslaw but asked about it and they brought some but it was warm when it came. The burger was called a wing sting chicken burger with “insanely hot-hot chilli sauce and cool mango lassi”. I love hot chilli but it was entirely absent! There was a thin squirt of sweet chilli and no heat whatsoever and no sign of mango. I complained and the waitress said oh sorry it’s a new menu. That’s not an excuse - if anything a new menu should be perfect if the kitchen have been freshly trained. So overall it’s a great environment but kitchen quality is poor and no concept of resolving problems. I’d have expected a complete error on the burger should be an offer to take it away or comped or re-serve it properly, instead the waitress said she would let the kitchen know. Very disappointed. Oh well we can try some other places - but a shame given this could be our local.

Response from Jason Allison, Owner at The Royal

Thanks for the feedback. I'm sorry we made some errors with your meal. As you say, we had just changed to our July menu on the same day you visited. Whilst we do train our staff for new menus, they are only human and are just as susceptible to making errors as there's always a lot of changes for them to remember. I apologise if this effected your visit. With the launch day also turning out to be a very warm and sunny day, they were under even greater pressure than they would otherwise have been. With the large volume of covers we handle each week, the vast majority of our guests leave very happy because the quality of our food is usually very high. Whilst mistakes do happen and where we are aware of them they are resolved, I would welcome you to give us the benefit of the doubt and give us a try on another occasion. Thanks again.
