This was a wonderful surprise, not at all what we had expected so close to San Jose. Views from some of the rooms, and from the restaurant were staggering, and the night sky full of stars. One room had a small kitchen/dining area, and a small private garden outside the bedroom. The other had a rooftop terrace - it was too hot to sit there! Rooms beautifully furnished, large modern shower rooms. Delicious dinner in the French-style restaurant. A warm welcome from Vaillant, who carried our (heavy!) cases to the rooms, and was the (head) waiter at dinner. So unexpected, and a super end to our travels around this beautiful country.

My family of 10 came here for their Christmas day brunch. The selection and food itself was just ok. However, you don't come here for the food. The view was phenomenal. Perched up high in Atenas, you have a spectacular view like none other! There was also a local band playing/singing and patrons (including my parents) got up to dance. It was such a lovely way to spend Christmas day. If you are in the Atenas area, go here!!! Even if it's for a coffee & snack! The view will be worth it, I promise!

Forget the small imperfections of the room - the view, the staff and the restaurant will blow your mind! We had room #2 (valley side) with a queen bed and FULL kitchen. Includes a loveseat and small dining table for two. The staff was very helpful and gave lots of suggestions. The restaurant may be small - and the menu may have a small selection, but the chef - is OUTSTANDING! The best meals we’ve had in CR! Highly suggest this location for any type of trip!

There is charm here for sure, however, they really need to up their game if they expect to attract a good client base. While it's a little out of the way, the vistas are great, with the exception of a few rooms. The breakfast starts at 7:30 which is late compared to most Costa Rican hotels. The room I was in was very clean but could use a pest spray as there were quite a few ants in the bathroom area. The bathroom had no plug for the sink and there was no soap / shampoo in the wall mounted shower containers. There were a few other minor points which the owner should pay attention to however, I won't mention here. This was a last minute booking so I was happy to get a room. The lady at reception (Monica) was excellent and very efficient. The biggest downside for me was; no aircon in the room so I got little sleep due to the temperature in the room. It finally cooled around 2am to a level that was just OK. Would give it a second chance but only if they have aircon next time.

The insanely steep driveway at the hotel should have been our first warning sign of what was to come. The hotel is located at the top of a hill with great views of the surrounding valleys. We did enjoy the restaurant property and would recommend that but do not stay at this hotel. The parking is limited and we were double parked by another guest which prevented us from leaving the hotel one evening until the guest was located to move their car.

The room is very old and not maintained. The bed didn’t actually have a box spring but a piece of old foam underneath. There is no air conditioning unit in the room!! The bathroom was by far the worst part of the room. It was poorly cleaned and there was no shower door so water splashed all over the bathroom. The shower head didn’t spray water consistently and sputtered. The only toiletries provided were hand soap and a half empty head and shoulders. We’ve stayed at hostels that provided more in the way of amenities than this hotel. Room did not have a safe.

The pool is nice but very small and only accommodated 1 family at a time. The noise from the pool can be very loud if you are in the rooms around it.

The hotel is very dated. Our kitchen faucet fell off in my hand. It was obvious that it had been glued and taped on. The bugs were horrible, but the hotel did the right thing and moved us. Unfortunately, the next room's plumbing was dated as well and the bathroom faucet squirted water all over the bath.

The restaurant food was truly fabulous -- The restaurant is not affiliated with the hotel. Go for the food but don't stay at Barons.

The only two good things that I can say are that the young lady at the helm of this sinking ship is delightful even though it's one problem after another. There was only one other couple staying at the same time as us. This should have been a BIG heads up when we arrived. The views are amazing except from OUR room. The palm trees were sooo overgrown on the deck/patio that you couldn't see anything without trying to lean over the deck and literally try to pull them apart. The room next to us did not seem to have this problem and being that they were the only others their, I don't know why they put us in this totally obstructed room. There's NO A/C....that's right, Costa Rica with NO A/C. The place is old, run down, dirty and completely disappointing. The "restaurant" had two choices....chicken or a very well done burger. They had a huge menu to look at in the room, but none of it was available. I'm a vegetarian, so I only got a salad. The bar had liquor but was not serving it....no bartender! I woke up the next A.M. and had to RUN to the bathroom due to an issue with the lettuce from the night before. My friend had to go to a non-English pharmacy to find an anti-diarrheal so that we could leave the resort. I felt really badly for Maria because she was in charge of dealing with all of this. She was really nice but very limited as to the help she could offer. I did try the pool however, the only not broken chair ripped right out from under me because the seat was all dry rot. When I went to just step in the pool, the tile was so slippery(slimey) that my foot slipped and I took a nasty fall into the gunite and stairs. The place is for sale and they should not put up these 30 year old pictures, amenities that they don't have, like food and a bartender or tell about the great food and views unless they can provide it. We're very disappointed and should have asked for a refund.

We had a scheduling issue in our trip, but the hosts were very understanding and gracious during a challenging time. We very much appreciated their understanding and flexibility given that we were having a stressful day due to scheduling problems and trip delays. Thank you Barons Resort!

I stayed here briefly and was awestruck by the gorgeous views both in day and at night. We had dinner in the restaurant which was really incredible French food (I think the owner is French?). The rooms have full size refrigerators and dining areas, and lovely balconies with a view. There is a small pool. Staff is very friendly and helpful. A great value.

Recently spent two nights at Barons Resort in Atenas. Several positives to mention..the front desk staff were outstanding..very accomodating and friendly..wonderful Chef on property who will prepare your meals with great pride and skill..the view of the central valley region is a must see. The upkeep of the room was not good. Felt dirty including bathroom..shower stall was filthy..shower head broken and reported but not fixed.
