We loved our stay at the hotel Malagueña. The staff are friendly and helpful. The grounds are clean. The ambiance is tranquil and the landscaping is beautiful. The breakfast was typical Mexican - eggs, beans, tortilla, and coffee. We stayed in the room with the turret which had a private balcony and amazing views - we lost count of the number of whales we saw. Note, there were about 150 steps from the street to our room, so if you have trouble with stairs, this may not be the hotel for you. The pool is key, as even in February, it is extremely hot. San Augustinillo's main street is easily accessed from the hotel and has good restaurants and beach clubs with chairs to rent. We walked to Mazunte at night for music and took the colectivo to Zipolite in the day to explore. The main drawback of the hotel is that the pool as the key asset, only has two lounge chairs. When we stayed, there was a party who would claim the chairs daily, so we didn't get a chance to enjoy the pool as easily as we would have liked, and this scarcity created awkwardness for the guests. Six chairs would have fit, but for some reason, the hotel owners only have two (we heard some were lost in a hurricane). The WiFi didn't work in our room or by the pool so we gave up trying to use it. Also, our room needed more hooks and places to put things. It would be nice to have a hammock and shade on the balcony with all the extra space available. Overall, my rating is 4.5 because of the lack of attention to customer experience by the hotel owners, but if they get more chairs, I would stay here again.

We had a lovely week-long stay at this little six-room boutique hotel! The place seems fairly new and the friendly gardener keeps the grounds looking lush and beautiful. The included breakfasts were excellent every day and it was nice that they served until 11 AM as we are late risers. it was very quiet and peaceful at night.

The location is convenient as it is up on a hill right in between Mazunte and San Augustinillo so a short walk to either town. Be warned though, the hill is very steep and the climb up is pretty intense! And the hotel of course being built on a hill has a lot of stairs. This is not a place for anyone mobility challenged at all! Taxis could ot be convinced to take us up to the door other than arriving and departure day-lol.

Unfortunately the usual couple who run (own?) the place were not there the week we were staying there, but the young girl in charge was kind and efficient, and the other ladies who did the cleaning and cooked our breakfasts were also great (eggs your choice with sausage bacon or chorizo, and coffee-juice is 50 pesos extra).

The room we had (#2) was very comfortable and roomy with a comfy king bed and bathroom with one sink and walk-in shower, and then a little change-room/closet on the other side. It also had a HUGE balcony with the most wonderful 300 (ish!) degree views of San Augustinillo beach and the mountains. There is no room safe or coffee maker but there is a mini-fridge in the room as well and they bring you a carafe of drinking water daily.

The small pool was a great way to end our days after trips to the local beaches- we went to Zipolite two days (150 pesos one way) and Puerto Angel one day (300 pesos I think one way). We were disappointed that due to the big surf at all of them other than Playa Panteon at Puerto Angel we really couldn't swim in the ocean here- but we got our fill when we moved to Huatulco the second week of our trip so that was ok. (We also lost my husband's cell phone in a taxi on the way to Puerto Angel- all his fault, it must have fallen out of his shorts. Unfortunately we never recovered it although we wrote several messages to the local taxi companies and also had one of the staff phone them. Live and learn!

Our only complaints regarding the hotel itself really was the very poor WiFi and the lack of comfortable seating on our deck area. Just two (hard as rock) chairs and a small wooden table. The space is so big and mostly empty. They could really use a nice little padded seating set, even some cushions for the built-in benches would be lovely. And a hammock. It would also be nice to have a couple extra comfy chairs by the pool too.

San Augustinillo is quite small and peaceful. There are not a lot of restaurants but we found enough places to go to dinner between there and Mazunte. Our best meals in SA were at El Navegante, Casa Mia I think it was, up another steep hill (Italian), Lobo de Mar on the main drag, and the restaurant at Punta Placer. We also went to Umami one evening, the wait was soooo long to get a table, but the food was pretty good.

Overall we enjoyed our stay in the area but we did feel a week was too long for us. We prefer Huatulco as we love to be in the ocean swimming and snorkeling and it was just too quiet in general in the evenings. But it was relaxing for sure!
