A magical place. My expectations were high but the facilities, view, water, and beach were all better than I could have imagined. My wife and I visited for 6 nights and 7 days (2 of which were travel days) in July of 2021 for a getaway. While the resort is incredibly expensive, it is worthy of the cost. I have a few gripes (that I cover below), but nothing that would make me question going back. This a boutique, adults-only resort with 30 rooms with a (semi-) private beach. Rooms come in two varieties: a beach-facing, relatively close to the water private suite/hut and a hillside private suite/hut with a plunge pool. We stayed in one of the hillside suites (#30) which is about halfway up the hill. All in all, while I am sure there are cost differences, I would recommend avoiding the beach-side suites and sticking with the hillside - they are amazing. Arrival - When you arrive at the Antigua Airport (ANU), a service will meet you and expedite you through the immigration, security, and baggage pickup process. This was a real time saver. ANU takes their COVID precautions seriously, asking us to clean our hands after every interaction. You will get a white slip from immigration that you will need when you depart, so save yourself some time and do not lose it. A car service will drive you from the airport to the resort. It is about a 35 minute drive in a Ford Expedition-type vehicle. The last mile, as you approach the resort, is ridiculously poorly-maintained, requiring drivers to go 5 MPH to avoid huge potholes. Once you arrive, you will be given a virgin drink and walked through an orientation of the resort. I would listen to this as there is a lot of good information. Room - I will speak mainly about the hillside suite as this is where we stayed. The hillside suites are split across essentially four rows up the hillside. The walk up to them is steep. As a general rule, these are very private suites. Some suites are easier to see into than others from the walkway, but generally, they are private. High is generally better. Our suite (30) was on the third row of suites from the bottom. The issue I see with the lower suites is that they have worse views and less privacy. The downside of the super high suites is that they can be seen into from the beach. This makes the third row pretty nice, but I am not sure you can go wrong with any of them. There is golf cart service up and down the hill. We only took the service up and walked down with no issue. This is not a ADA/handicap accessible route, especially after a few drinks. The golf carts show up quickly, we never waited more than 2-3 minutes. These room are huge. They include a plunge pool (ours was about 8 feet by 8 feet and 4 feet deep), a wrap-around patio (with 2 sets of lounge chairs, a couch, a lounger, and a table), a bedroom (with 2 huge closets, a desk, and a mini-bar), a bathroom (with a huge 2 person tub, a toilet, 2 sinks, and a desk), and an outdoor shower (with rain shower head). The room includes a TV (which we didn’t use), a sound system (which we didn’t use), and a safe. From the wrap-around porch, you have a view out to the ocean. Speaking of privacy, the only viewpoints into our suite were a very limited from the walkway onto our porch and a very limited view from above into our pool through some trees. I checked out most of the other hillside suites and concluded this was the case for most of them. The one exception was that ours was not viewable from the beach. The mini-bar is worth a paragraph. Each morning at breakfast you will be asked how you want it stocked. That evening they will stock it to meet your needs including odd requests. For example, we requested ginger beer and they made it for us. This was a really great amenity. In ours, initially, there was water, sparking water, white wine, red wine, coke, Diet Coke, sprite, 2 types of local beers, tonic water, 2x vodka, 2x whiskey, 2x rum, 2x scotch, 2x gin. My one gripe about the room is the air conditioning situation. I have been in the Caribbean many times and A/C is always a problem, so this is not unexpected. Undoubtedly, it is hot in Antigua. The room comes with an over-the-door A/C unit (and it can really pump it out like you are in a milk and egg room at Costco) plus an overhead fan. If you leave the doors shut to the patio and the bathroom with the A/C on, it will get cold in the room. If you leave any doors open, it will get very hot and will take a while to cool down. The bathroom is not cooled. At night, we found it very tough to keep the temperature right, often freezing by 1 or 2am and then hot by 3 or 4am once we turned it down. I left with a head cold at the end of the trip because of this back and forth. Again, every resort in the Caribbean has this issue. I would highly recommend bringing a small personal fan. There is WiFi across the resort and in the rooms. We found it to be spotty and slow. It is good enough to check your e-mail or Twitter, but I would not be streaming. You are in paradise - stay off your phone. A couple of other notes: 1. Surprisingly, there was no must or damp smell in the room. I expected there to be some given the plunge pool, but nothing. 2. Some people complained about bug noises at night being very loud. These are actually frogs and we found it to be loud, but not crazy. 3. The plunge pool is awesome and has a high Chlorine-level (a good thing). We did find glass at the bottom of the pool one night. 4. Turndown service requires you to ask for it. This seemed really odd to me. 5. The sheets on the bed leave a lot to be desired. Meals - Like most boutique resorts this size, all meals are served from a single dining facility that includes a bar/patio area. Three meals a day are served here - so you will get used to it. All in all, we found the food to be very good with a lot of diversity. Dinners will include 1-2 appetizer options, a soup, 4 main course options, and 2 deserts. As all meals are inclusive, there are no prices. The exception to this is the wine list which includes a variety of included options but also by-the-bottle pricing for some options. We found the bottle prices to be absurd (4x retail). Let me first give credit to the resort for managing a variety of dietary needs. The chef met us when we first arrived and adjusted the menu (for everyone at the resort) to make sure there were options for my wife’s gluten-free and dairy-free requirements. This is one of the reasons we chose this resort as they could adapt. Overall, throughout the week, they did a really nice job of making sure there were options at every meal. There were a few screw-ups, usually with the side dishes including butter, but nothing we are not used to. The dining facility has about 30 tables spread across three platforms. All tables are basically equal with a few caveats. We found the best seats to be on the first/lowest platform near the beach - these seem to get the best breeze. The seats nearest the entry area will get the best service, given their proximity to the kitchen. For a fee, you can eat on the beach. Every dinner included some live music from Reggae to Pop. We found all of it to be great. A couple of notes about meals: 1. These meals are on “island time” and by no means fast- think timing for meals in Spain. You can expect for dinner to take two hours plus every night. I don’t have any major issue with this but after 4-5 meals you start to notice it. 2. You can get breakfast and dinner delivered to your room for a $15 charge. The advantage, other than being in your room, is that you get everything at once. We found this to be a very nice change of pace after some marathon long meals at the main dining area. Highly recommend this approach. Ask for the whole wine bottle. 3. For lunch, one option is to eat it in the bar/patio area near the main pool. We found this to be an enjoyable way to eat that allowed us to go back to the beach easily. Speaking of the bar, it is excellent. There is a huge included drink list and a list of alcohols with cost. I worked my way though the entire drink menu and found everything to be good. The margarita and Miami Vice are particularly good. Like the dining facility, the bar is on “island time” often requiring 20-25 minutes to deliver an order. Beach and Pool — The beach is wonderful. It is a brown, thick sand and a layer of shells. Right in front of the resort about 10 feet into the water is a huge rock reef. The water is cool, crystal clear, and very salty - you will float. On the average day there are 8-10 chair setups that are well separated and there is a beach attendant to help with chairs, towels, umbrellas, etc. The beach is about 20 feet from the bar, so you can either have drinks delivered or make a quick walk to the bar. We found that the beach attendants, with a few exceptions, were quick to re-fill your glass. We only saw one situation where all chairs were full all week. There is no need to make the 7am rush to reserve a seat. A couple of thoughts on the beach: 1. This is a private beach, but there is, what looks to be, a public area to right when looking at the resort. We saw kids playing there most of the week. This was no issue but it does hurt some of the “remote” feeling. It also generates some foot traffic across the property. 2. Throughout the week, we were approached every day by someone looking to sell something. In some cases, these were resort-approved vendors and in other cases they clearly were not. This really feels out of place and the resort should stop it. If I want to book an excursion, I will book it at the front desk. 3. There are a variety of water sport options included and at a fee. In particularly, the jet ski tours seem to be popular. There is a large pool next to the bar/patio area for use by everyone but primarily to serve the beach-side suites that do not have plunge pools. It is a nice option if you want to cool off. Service — Let me first start by saying everyone you meet with be friendly and warm. The culture here is wonderful. We found the service to be good, not great. I am the first to ignore any reviews regarding service issues as they tend to be one-off issues and the reviewer is punishing the hotel for a single bad issue or two. This is not that. Overall, the service was well done, but there were minor, repeated issues with basically every interaction in the dining room. Overall, this wouldn’t keep me from visiting the resort again, but given the price tag, it is pretty annoying. COVID - The hotel took COVID-19 precautions seriously. All staff were wearing masks and cleaned everything regularly. Overall, the guests were fairly lax on mask usage but there is plenty of room to spread out. The hotel brought in a Doctor to provide testing for outbound flight ($120/person). Bottom line, this is a 5* resort with a 5* price - it is worth it.

Prepare to have every expectation exceeded! They took care of our every need from the moment we deplaned until they took us back to the airport. The people, their smiles, their attentiveness! We have never been treated as well during any of our travels. Every meal was delicious and special! Indulge in their local dishes and be prepared to fall in love. Patricia guided me through the menu and chose items I wouldn’t have selected myself - they were out of this world! Try the lamb and add the coconut cream to the protein shake. You’ll thank me later. Call Judith before your arrival and arrange for dinner on the beach - then ask Annette if Kacey can be in charge of your evening experience. Let Simone know what base ingredient you prefer in your cocktail then let her create her magic. The service excellence spills out onto the beach where George and Kashane spoil and entertain you! The spa services are aahhmazing!!! The massage and aromatherapy will make all of your senses tingle. Arrange for the in-room massage - trust me! I’m sure every suite is amazing. We will request Suite 19 (garden view) again. Our walk to and from was the perfect distance to enjoy and appreciate the immaculate grounds. The resort itself is beautiful and the people make it spectacular! The Ritz-Carlton should study up on the Hermitage Bay Experience! We can’t wait to return!

My wife and I just left Hermitage Bay and we honestly feel like we just left our family. The staff are, without a doubt, the most welcoming we’ve ever encountered. The food was fantastic. The attention to detail was uncanny. The rooms were gorgeous. Everything was aimed at creating a relaxing environment free from worry. This isn’t a resort for partying. To be fair, the place is pretty quiet after dinner. But that’s clearly not why Hermitage Bay was created. It’s a place for focusing on the little things that make life beautiful. It’s a place for enjoying your surroundings and the people in your life that make it worth living. There isn’t one ounce of me that wishes we had saved some money and gone elsewhere. Every penny was worth it and we hope to return someday to a place that’s now dear to our hearts.

Awesome trip! Top highlight was the super friendly and helpful staff. That said, the incredible location with easy access from airport, nice and private bungalows that are easy accessible to pool/beach/dining, included amenities like snorkeling (reef right off the beach!) sailboats etc. were all great too. Only item that wasn't A++ was the food, which still was really good and "just" an A but a few other places we've stayed in the past had slightly better. That said, would love to be back ASAP and no hesitation!
