#1 of 12 Speciality lodging in Castara
Travellers' Choice
Castara Retreats is a small Tobago eco resort superbly located overlooking the Bay of Castara, with stunning views of the Caribbean and mountains. For those seeking holidays in Tobago the seven tropical hardwood accommodations are built to the highest standards and are set right above Castara beach in lush tropical gardens. Backed by the deep green of the oldest protected rainforest in the Western Hemisphere and framed by mango trees and bamboo, Castara Retreats offers Caribbean vacations in a lush tropical paradise where guests can relax and live in the landscape around them. The lodge accommodation offers 17 separately available areas, each with wonderful privacy and exclusive terraces, which can be rented individually by couples, or together for larger groups and families. The accommodation is specially designed to create open, spacious living areas that allow uninterrupted views of the beach and rainforest, cool sea breezes and the natural sights and sounds of the ocean, rainforest and village. Each lodge or apartment is constructed of red cedar, a local hardwood, and is from sustainable sources. The bedrooms, each with en suite showers and either queen size or twin beds all have full size mosquito nets on suspended wooden frames. The spacious living areas have panoramic views of the two beaches looking north-west and also to the coastline looking south-west, and stunning sunsets over the Caribbean. Each accommodation has the advantage of free Wi-Fi internet access. There is comfortable and stylish seating with both indoor and outdoor dining and all three areas are equipped to a very high standard for self-catering. We have recently completed open-decked Pavilion Bar and Restaurant - already receiving excellent ratings - perfect for a romantic dinner for two or for family groups and events.

I’m a lover of the countryside and natural surroundings so when searching for a place to stay in Tobago my priority was a countryside setting, close to the seaside and surrounded by nature so I knew Castara Retreats was the place for me. It was everything I wanted with it’s outdoor kitchen, hammock , rustic ambience, the beach with the sound of seagulls close by and a waterfall 10 min away. I also thoroughly enjoyed the yoga class with Judha at the Wellness Studio on the compound so by the time I came back to Trinidad I was rested , relaxed and rejuvenated. Special thanks to all those at Castara Retreats Jeanell, Porridge and Shaquille who made the stay for my daughter and I very comfortable .

I booked my stay however the passenger I was traveling with fell ill and I also was called out to work the night before . I didn’t not mind arriving late but due to COVID restrictions we cannot travel if flu like symptoms are being experienced . I emailed the night before asking for options . I did not expect to receive a refund however a credit for another stay or even a deduction for cleaning fee was ok with me . I spoke to someone over the phone and they indicated that I would be allowed to stay at another time however the persons responding to emails stated they could not assist me and all my funds would be lost . I explained that I was willing to meet them halfway but to lose all the cash during such a tough time would be difficult . I saw no need to hold all the funds . Truly disappointed . I believe that at times like these it’s better to treat the local tourists a bit better than have no guests at all .

We fully understand the disappointment when a holiday due to a guest experiencing unexpected circumstances which prevents travel. This has been the most challenging year for hospitality, with expenditure continuing in order to preserve our premises and to retain work for our local employees many of whom have been with us for a number of years, at a time when our income has been decimated. Despite this we have added a flexible cancellation policy for covid lockdown and positive tests and have not received any other complaints about this policy. Any cancellation very late in the day incurs expense for us, the lodge has been prepared and we have been prevented from renting it elsewhere. If we offered refunds to all who had to cancel at such late notice we would no longer be in business. It is not commercially viable for us to absorb all losses through late cancellations. We urge all guests to take out insurance. This cancellation was initially said to be due to needing to work. We value our local guests and our current Caricom discount is the best we have ever offered to any guests. We appreciate the frustration suffered when things are unable to go to plan but sadly we cannot cover all eventualities of cancellation.

Being a local from the island of Tobago, Castara Retreats was a still such a refreshing experience. The unique treehouse aesthetic gives an energy of inhabiting a space that has been untouched but is just as comfortable as home dwelling. My wife I arrived at the resort in the evening when it was already dark and although we could not see the surrounding views, we were greeted by the sound of the ocean that served as soothing background ambiance for the duration of our stay. We were simply not prepared for the stunning view after sunrise the next morning. The view from the wellness studio was also a sight to behold where we had morning yoga and a full body massage. This paradise away from home was a sublime getaway that made me forget that I hadn't even left the country. Castara Retreats was the perfect place to create memories that will last us a lifetime.
