ACAJOU is a small, eco-friendly, family run hotel situated on the beautiful and dramatic northern Coast of Trinidad in a little fishing village called Grande Riviere. The hotel is built as a group of traditional cottages nestled in between the beach, a crystal clear river and lush rainforest covered mountains.

Acajou is a very quite and friendly hotel at the beautiful beach of Grande Riviere. You live in a cottage, witch is so nice. A lot of sounds in the surrounding, birds, dogs, frogs and waves. The staff treats you like a family member with all their love. Food is great also, both

Clean room and surroundings. Very comfortable bed and pillows and love the fresh clean smell of the bedding. Breakfast was tasty. Staff very accommodating to my request to have a private dinner on our deck the night of our anniversary. Though there was a mix up with my

We stayed in a spacious lodge with a big bed, sofa and nice bathroom. There is no need for air conditioning. On one side is a short path to the beach and then on the other the main street. The beach is really beautiful although the waves are a bit too big for swimming around in

The hotel is within walking distance of a couple mini-marts and the turtle watching beach (Grand Riviere Beach?). The cabin was spacious and clean, no a/c but it did not need it as the area was well shaded and the breeze was always present. Breakfast was good, without being

Acajou was definitely one of my best "get-away" experiences in Trinidad. The huts were spacious and comfy, dinner at the hotel was exceptional, the intimate, but home-y vibe of the place was also truly appreciated. The staff were always there if something was needed. I won't

Does the cafe serve roti? If not, any local suggestions?
When I visited, Roti was not on the menu. If you walk along the main road (heading east) there is a corner shop just across the corner (Hosanna’s Street) by the Grand Rivière Hotel sign. Their food is total local and you can check the menu board to see what day curry/ Roti is served. About less than $10USD a meal. Food was delicious.

I would not recommend snorkeling here at all let alone swimming at this beach. The current is very rough as are the waves. The beach is better for seeing nesting sea turtles and relaxing on than anything. In Trinidad you may have better luck on the Gulf of Paria side with snorkeling, though I don’t think it’s well known for that.

Is a 4WD/AWD recommended to reach the hotel or will a front wheel drive suffice?
Any car should work just fine!

Hi. I also felt quite safe at the hotel. While the beach area is public, the hotel grounds were never occupied by anyone but guests and staff.

"The consistency of the hot water in the shower fluctuated so made for a bit of uncomfortable shower."
"Sleep in the hammock."
"There was no kitchenette in the room but there was a kettle, coffee, tea and a mini-fridge."
"Rooms 1 and 2 have the best view, but the others have more shade during the daytime."
"Some flat stones along the walkway to the beach would be useful especially when it rains as the pathway can be very muddy and slippery. "
