Protea Hotels are always a "go to" hotel when in an unfamiliar area, be it in Zambia, Zimbabwe or South Africa. Lin this case I was extremely disappointed with this Protea, Umfolosi! The rooms are not clean. You cannot walk on the floors barefoot. The curtains are off the hooks and they are filthy. Bathroom floors not in any better...

The hotel is situated +-40km from Richards bay, convenient hotel for a quick stopover if travelling to Swaziland. Staff are very friendly and pleasant. They were available to assist with extra blankets, towels, baby cot and an umbrella to and from reception. Beautiful landscaped gardens. Rooms are neat and clean. Showers are a bit dated and could be redone to...

The hotel sits in a great location with nice surroundings. The rooms are ok - they are adequately size and not cramped, room is clean, bathrooms are decent and clean, however i suggest they install mosquito nets in front of windows as there are a lot of mosquitoes than come into the room if windows are open. There was no...

First off, the company has to check how they register in google maps, because it clearly took us on a wrong location by following exactly the directions to Protea Hotel Umfolozi. We reached the property and its really nice with a resort feeling to it just the moment you stepped out. Checking in was easy and we were taken to...

Not a bad hotel/lodge with chalets close to the river and a sea view from the pub. I liked the chalets the most, ultimate privacy and a cosy sleep with your own private parking. The TV's are a bit outdated...not that you'll watch them at all.

We arrived in the dark and left very early the next morning so we didn't see the grounds. The toilet is separate from the bathroom and has a door which is more than I can say for the bathroom itself. The tub has a hand nozzle and no attachment to make it a shower by hanging on the wall. At...

We stayed one night on our way to Swaziland. It was an average hotel with the basic needs...shower, TV, decent beds. The buffet dinner was good as was the breakfast. WiFi was only available in the lobby which was the worst thing for me. We came in late and left very early in the morning, so it suited our needs.

We stayed here as part of a tour of South Africa and Swaziland. We arrived late in the day and left early, and we did not get a chance to enjoy much of the hotel. The restaurant is nice, the food and the service was good. We did not stay in the hotel itself, but in one of the bungalows....

Opened the door to a spacious chalet room, to find a dead cochroach on the floor. No clock in the room! Neighbours left outside light on all night, so sleep quality wasn't the best. Wifi available in reception and restaurant. Staff here seem to be on the lazy side.

We stayed at Protea Hotel Umfolozi River for one night in March between Capetown and Swaziland. The hotel is in the middle of nowhere, so plan ahead as you will not be able to go to a local grocery store or bank. This hotel is fine for a short stay if you are between cities and planning to go on...
