Vasilis is an amazing host and the room is very comfortable with a lovely breakfast room and a nice coffee. The BEST opportunity you will have to visit Saria Island with a guided tour on his boat. On an 8 hour tour you will have the opportunity to visit the ancient city of Nisyros and 4th century pirate ruins. Vasilis grills a lovely lunch which you can enjoy on a private beach and have a snorkel if you like! Beware the friendly goats and donkeys that may wander down from the hills, they are adorable!! Vasilis will treat you to a cave swim and historical songs and stories that are equally fascinating and heartfelt. An opportunity not to be missed in Diafani

The hotel has no sea views but is situated in a very quiet part of Diafani close to the sea. The rooms are clean and comfortable. Breakfast offers a lot of regional products and is served on the shaded terrace. Vasilis, the owner and his wife are extremely helpful and friendly (not the fake commercial smile you often get in hotels and restaurants). For us the big advantage of the hotel were the excursions Vasilis organise for his guests with his minibus and boat. To see the natural beauty of North Karpathos and Saria, the use of these 2 means of transport are indispensable.

This is the second time I have stayed at the Balaskas, last time was three years ago, I rated it very highly then and still do. Vasili has improved accommodation and added extra touches. The hotel is cleaned to a very high standard, his wife Eugenia has very high standards. Vasili and Eugenia are excellent hosts and the nicest people you could wish to meet, they take a pride in looking after their guests in everyway. There is no sea view, but beach just around the corner, but there is a gorgeous view of the mountains. Night time is very quiet so you are assured of a good nights sleep. The rooms are spacious, some have small kitchen, with oven and two ring burner

I booked a room for my first visit to Diafani and the day before check-in while driving along the island I visited the town to see what's up. Except the seaside street which is beautiful, the rest of the town, especially the area around this hotel is horribly horrible, with almost everything under construction, so it is more like Beirut during the war. Also, there are almost a hundred abandoned cars across the streets and entrance of the town, so it welcomes you more as a car cemetery than like a touristic town. I'm surprised the other reviewers didn't say it clearly. I emailed the hotel telling them that I disliked the area around the hotel so much that I was not going to attend at all but they charged me anyway. Bad attitude, Balaskas! I honestly suggest that until a couple of years that construction ends, stay night in Olimpo, which is near Diafani beach, but has several hotels and has a unique atmosphere.

They are thieves. I had to leave the hotel after 2 days and let money for my stay, yet they charged my credit card for the full stay. The hotel has no sea view anywhere, so their description is a lie.

The calm and relaxed atmosphere is just perfect for anyone that wants to get rid of the crowd and any sort of stress. The place is clean, fresh, and comfortable. The lack of sea view is totally rewarded by magnificent breakfasts (eggs, local cheese, yogurt, honey and marmalade) in the patio, friendly chats with the owners, suggestions about the surroundings, and boat trips on a small fishing vessel.

Some locals call the place the nicest hotel in Diafani -- probably the most expensive, too, but it won't break the bank. The hotel is on an inner street, family-run, and extraordinarily friendly. The town itself has a small population, and a cast of characters. Stay for a week, get to know some of them (as well as fellow visitors), hike and boat to the beaches, explore Olympos, and slow down.

Spacious-feeling and clean room with white sheets and a generous balcony and windows each side for a cross-breeze...I woke to the sound of wind in the olive trees, and little birds. View of hillside and a couple of windmills. The sea with all the restaurants and Diafani's one quirky shop is just a few minutes' walk away. The hotel has a white, calm, open feel and some bookshelves with excellent books on the history of Olympos and Diafani, and the wifi is good. And Vasilis offers boat trips to nearby beaches e.g. Agios Minas.

Left Balaskas with tears in my eyes. Sometimes you really meet good people and that was the case! I feel quite privileged for meeting Vassilis and Evgenia. Vassilis is such a warm and friendly person, very attentive, always available to help and really concerned about our well-being and with good suggestions for walkings. His big smile is contagious. We had such good conversations. I must say that good friend is the word that comes to my mind when I think about Vassilis and family.

The hotel is very lovely with nice terrace, the rooms are light, fresh, very comfortable, with very good taste and super clean. Daily clean service. Evgenia keeps everything spotless. Wi-fi available. The room has a small kitchen well equipped.

Superb breakfast in the patio, very tasty, with eggs, greek yogurt, honey, homemade bread. I really recommend to eat it!

Vassilis organize excursions to different places with his minibus and his new boat. He has a lovely small fish boat but now arranged a new bigger one because of the “European laws”.

The perfect place to relax and to get rid of all the stress. A really authentic experience.

We stayed at the Balaskas hotel for 5 days with our baby. The Balaskas family were excellent hosts and went out of their way to be helpful. First, they gave us a very nice wooden crib for our daughter (not the usual travel bed!), which had been their grandson's. Vassilis picked us up and dropped us off at the port, took us to Olympos, and on a boat trip to Papa Minas beach. The room was very clean (clean enough to let our baby crawl around), and a very short walk from the beach and waterfront. But the best part was the Balaskas family - Vassilis, Eugenia, and Michalis! My only complaint would be that the rate we were quoted did not include breakfast, and were not told that breakfast was 5 euros extra per person until check out. That said, we would probably have opted for the breakfast anyway, but it would have been useful to know the full price for budgeting purposes.
