We stayed with our 4yo daughter and a 4mo baby. We couldn't have chosen a better place to end our week-long trip. Outstanding scenery and views. Really nice swimming pool. Excellent service and food. Warm, professional team. We were careful with setting our expectations, as we'd typically prefer a place with more modern interiors. However, the space simply works beautifully - the interiors are scenic, and the pictures don't fully make them justice. Joana was the perfect host to what was, for us, the near-perfect stay.
Our two days were too short! Our room was huge and had beautiful views over the valley. We really enjoyed our time by the pool, which we had to ourselves. When we arrived we weren't planning on dinner at the inn but when we saw the terrace we changed our minds. Dinner was fresh fish and it was very tasty. We had dinner the second night as well. Not gourmet fare but good and accompanied by local wine and port. Breakfast was plentiful with lots of fruit choices. Casa d'Alem is not a high luxury vineyard inn but is welcoming and charming. There are only a handful of rooms. Joanne and Juliana made us feel like we were family for the short time we stayed.
This place has an amazing location with a very nice garden(a lot of flower senses and fruits trees). The place is perfectly located in the middle of vineyards. We really felt in peace chilling out in the garden. The house itself has antique fournitures. Although we usually like modern accommodation, the style here gave us a very positive feel, as if we were travelling back in time. The beds were very good and confy, the toilet and shower were renovated (very modern shower). When we first reached, we were welcomed by a very charming lady, that helped us book vineyard visit in a neighbourhood quinta. We choose to have diner here. The diner was nice, served in the garden, we had soup, oven cooked fish and fruits. The breakfast was really very nice, served in the antique dining room. The staff was very friendly and always paying attention to your needs. We really had a nice surprise here. Everything looked better than we expected. We would definitely come back here.…
The good points were the fabulous location and views across vineyards and little hamlets high up on the Douro valley side. The pool was lovely and the staff welcoming. However the place is old, albeit with fascinating antiques, and run down. Our room was large and had comfy beds but the bathroom smelled overpoweringly of drains despite being clean. It made the room smell. The food was good, plentiful, simple fare but I had concerns about hygiene. Some newly made preserves sat out all night uncovered in the annexe of the dining room with flies.
Lovely place to relax and enjoy the beautiful Douro surroundings. We had the pool to ourselves all day, which was a luxury! Lunch at the pool was great and the hostesses are super friendly. The room was gorgeous and the interior all dated from the wealthy days of Portugal. Beautiful. Only negative thing was the bed which was too short (for 1.80 + people like us) and the old mattress unpleasant due to the spirals that stab your back.
