Pros: Quiet, showers had hot water, clean, the staff was extremely friendly. Waitress Kathy came to take our dinner order while out in the lagoon so we could beat the crowd. Took care of us the rest of our stay too. All the staff made sure we were comfortable.

Cons: 30 mins away from town. Fortunately we had snacks, water, other drinks and our first aide kit. If not it probably would have not been good especially because the dirt road is extremely rough and takes about 10 mins or so to get to the hotel from the highway. Only one car can drive at a time so it was horrible when another car would come from the opposite direction there isn’t anywhere for you to go so you have to pull to the side as much as possible and hope you don’t scratch the rental car. Last con: WiFi could only be accessed in the checkin/restaurant area. You had no cell service what so ever in your room. Only your own cell service in the lagoon area. Also take water shoes this part of the lagoon has rocks at the bottom and most definitely wouldn’t not go in without them.

Overall cute little place with your own private villa/ bungalow. It’s a great place if you want to have a romantic getaway. I wouldn’t do a long stay, it is off the radar and eventually you’d want to go into town. But if you want to completely whine down and get away this is the place.

This resort is nestled in a lush and fertile jungle setting. Conveniently located off the 307 between Chetumal and Tulum, this tropical and inspired facility is an undiscovered gem and is an absolute paradise beckoning anyone looking for a peaceful and laid back visit with the gorgeous lagoon views, the Mexican sunrise, and a truly restorative vacation. The proprietor, Roberto, and his wife are gracious and welcoming hosts eager to share their slice of heaven with their guests. Roberto was a true host in every sense of the word. He was quick to accommodate our last minute reservation and extended more kindness and consideration than I’ve ever encountered from any staff during all of my travels. Our meal was cooked to order by a local chef and the quality was astounding. The property itself is uniquely designed with villas that blend perfectly into the setting and contribute to the overall beauty. Every part of the facility is well cared for and spotlessly clean. There are covered decks with loungers which extend over the lagoon and allow for spectacular views. I highly recommend trying this place. You won’t regret it.

We stayed here for 1 night during our recent road trip around the Yucatan peninsula. It was really just an overnight stop on the journey from Calakmul to Mayakoba. The hotel is situated about 4 kilometres off the main highway down a bumpy dirt track. There was nobody at reception when we arrived and it took a few minutes to find somebody to check us in.

On the edge of the lake it should be a lovely tranquil spot but unfortunately on the afternoon we were there we had to put up with chain saws and hammering as they built a wooden platform over the lake - not really what we came here for. There also appeared to be a large number of day trippers on an organised outing who all disappeared about 4pm leaving the place almost excluively to us and the workmen.

The room itself was small and minimally furnished. There was no TV, no Aircon, no tea & coffee making facilities, no safe and little charm. In theory we booked a waterfront room but between our room and the water was a hedge, some palm trees and a man made area where all the sunbeds were situated so not exactly my definition of waterfront.

In theory WiFi is available in the central building but it wasn't working during our stay.

The best part of the stay from our perspective was first thing in the morning as the sun rose over the lake and everything felt tranquil and calm with just the birdsong for company. It wasn't long before the workmen turned up again to spoil it all.

Food is average and there's not a huge choice. Everything had to be paid in cash so make sure you have enough pesos with you.

The colour of the lagoon here is not as spectacular as in Bacalar itself and I'm sure there are probably better places to stay.

It’s located at one of the most beautiful places on earth and that simple fact makes it a paradise. But the hotel itself was not as comfortable as you’d expect when going on vacations, especially with kids, and was definitely not worth the money we paid for. We had actually paid for 7 nights and ended up using only 4 and moved to Tulum; so we rather lost money than spending our whole vacations at this place.
What didn’t work?
THE LOCATION. If you’re coming from the town of Bacalar (where the civilization is) it would take you a 30 min drive in a proper highway + 12 to 15 min of dirt in the middle of the jungle, with no lightning at all and no cellphone service. Really frightening if you get to there at night.
The hotel is the only form of civilization you’ll find in there and being really small (10 cabins only), there’s so much quite and peace which sounds like a great plan for a couple / a couple of days, but not for a family with kids that might need a convenience store from time to time to buy sunblock, diapers or whatever, and/or need some medical attention (I was praying for my kids not to get injured or bitten by an insect because the closest to a doctor or pharmacy I was was the receptionist, a really nice lady that kindly said she had some alcohol and gauzes if needed).
THE CABIN. Just a few meters away from the lagoon, it had this amazing view and the right beds to accommodate our 2 kids (6 and 3 years old) but it felt like hell inside... there’s no AC and you just can’t stop sweating while in there. Plus, the space between the main door and our bed was so tiny that it was really hard to enter/exit fast and believe me, with the number of flying insects and mosquitos that surround the area, you need to be fast so they don’t come in.
THE RESTAURANT. They do have a restaurant and the food is AMAZING (traditional mexican), BUUUT they don’t accept credit cards and refuse to add meals to your statement arguing that the restaurant is not part of the hotel, which is a complete fail, especially if you are in the middle of the jungle with no proper roads to go in and out, and the closest ATM is 45 min away. They should definitely let you know that in advance.
Besides they’re only open for 2 hours in the morning, 2 hours at noon and 2 hours at night, so good luck if you feel hungry at the wrong time of the day. And remember, there’s no other options around. Only if you dare to cross the jungle which is what we did almost everyday because thank god we had rent a car.
THINGS TO DO. Free kayaks are great and the lagoon is a dream come true, but aside from that (and a nice read) there’s nothing else to do. Again, for a couple to stay there a couple of days to chill and relax, that’s great. But I think a family with small kids would be grateful to have more activities when on vacations.
And now that I think about it, even if it was just me and my husband, I wouldn’t return.
Hope this is useful for both the hotel to improve its service and the tourists planing to visit my country.

Decided to make the 3 hour drive from Playa Carmen because my Mexican friend’s highly recommended me to go. Wow, this place was wonderful, there is a long dirt and bumpy road through jungle and at moments we felt we were going nowhere, but all of a sudden came to the entrance of the resort. Truly amazing place, we were happily greeted by the hotel staff. We had a bungalow right in front of the lake.

Place is very quiet and serene. There was only 6 more guests when we got there. Rooms are small but nice. A/C is only available during evening hours. There is a lot of mosquitoes around this time of year, bring OFF!

Lake is amazing, different hues of blue colors. It is kinda rocky , no sand , so be careful. There are kayaks that you can use freely.

Restaurant serves authentic Mexican dishes, all are excellent. The service was great too. Takes some time to arrive but it’s worth the wait.

After dinner we went to the side of the lake to enjoy the moon and stars under this amazing place, it was truly magical.

I highly recommend this place if you want some peace and quiet and enjoy the sounds of nature. I never saw and heard so many kinds of birds at this place. We loved it. Just wished we could stay more days.

We intended to stay for 5 nights but booked for 3 and only stayed 2. This resort is picture perfect with well tended lawns, gorgeous flowers and flowering vines, right on the upper end of lake bacalar. There are kayaks to use on the lake. It has attractive cabanas with modern bathrooms (but not extensive hot water) and a smallish but comfortable queen? size bed. The room size is fine but not large. the cabanas are not all configured the same. It is 10 - 15 minutes back out to the main road and probably 45 minutes from the town of bacalar, where there are restaurants and other amenities. We chose this place because we knew it was remote, but offered wifi, a kitchen and offered to fix breakfast or dinner for a small fee. this was important since --it was remote. for $95 a nite it was on the high end but the amenities persuaded us.
Well no wifi; a wifi system was quickly installed in the owners quarters after we were there a day and had to use the owners computer. (like asking to go into someone's house you don't know too well and use their computer) Now, though,[they updated while we were there] you can sit outside near the owners quarters and access the system. There is no kitchen in the cabanas[ they had advertised that there was]. however there is a large industrial kitchen in the owners quarters which we were allowed to use for breakfast after we pointed out the misadvertising. I'm not sure they had ever had a guest before because what is a guest suppose to eat or drink. surely they didn't expect people to drive 45 minutes into town for breakfast. Anyhow it was all very awkward. No one offered to cook us anything. We made our own coffee and breakfast-(we had come prepared for that due to our expectations) There was no attempt to give us any suggestions about restaurants, (or anything at all that would be of interest to tourists for that matter) except for the chuck wagon (fine) at the end of the 15 minute drive out of the road to the highway. (we learned later --by ourselves--that if you go north (away from bacalar) there are some local restaurants (untested).
We learned quickly that this place is really set up as an attraction/destination for people coming off the huge cruise ships at mahahual . its peaceful when there's a few guests there (we were the only ones) but when you come back to enjoy the peacefulness and theres lots of cruise ship guys running around its a different story.
We left after two days primarily because we were extremely uncomfortable at night. The resort is powered by a generator which comes on early evening then goes off shortly after midnight. With the fan going its comfortable, but when the generator ends the fan comes to a stop. The cabanas are not set up for any cross ventilation and so we stayed awake much of the night sweating. stepping outside to cool off we found red ants on our feet. although we asked to keep the generator running, we were not accomodated. (this is in january--i can't imagine May or whenever!) As birdwatchers we were more than pleased with the area and the lake. It had not been opened long and perhaps there are some growing pains. i think the website may have been updated to be more accurate. (and it looks like they may have updated their services--but then that's what we thought when we booked, too. )The people running it were lovely and meant well, i'm sure. But we felt mislead and there is another option, if you choose to stay at this end of the lake.

Decided to visit Bacalar lagoon resort as the reviews were good, so here goes the place is in the middle of no where they say Bacalar but you are 30 minutes away from the town, the road unless driving SUV very rough, property very pretty staff unless you speak Spanish you are going to have a hard time unless owners are there, Roberto was very rude and sarcastic his wife Greta well not friendly at all. breakfast is between 7 and 10 but really don't expect to get your food till 8, no ac poor signage to get there, and for paying the price they ask you think you will have privacy but no by lunch time you have vans showing up with cruise ship people for a day tour, so now you have to deal with a bunch of loud and rude people and we are talking around 30 to 50 people at a time so forget tranquility, for the afternoon lunch well unless you have lunch before the mob gets there you are out of luck as was told they come first lol... as for dinner you have 2 choices but advertising full restaurant and bar far from the truth I ordered dinner and well that was a disaster so as for the review I think most of them are coming from the cruise ship groups and the bad ones are coming from people who actually have stayed there. Wifi not the greatest so my advise is Bacalar is a beautiful place to visit but stay in town were if you get hungry or want something from the store it is available as at the resort they don't even have a canteen to buy chips or anything really and if you need something after 9 forget it as everybody disappears so no I will not return to this place

Response from robert e, General Manager at Bacalar Lagoon Resort
Responded Mar 11, 2017
Bacalar Lagoon Resort was built for the sole purpose of providing an opportunity for guests to relax in a beautiful natural setting in front of Bacalar Lagoon where the only sounds are birds and animals and no other hotels are visible . In our web site and on the pages of Expedia.com and Booking.com and also Googel maps it clearly states we are not in the Bacalar which is 30 minutes to the south alongside the same lagoon. In addition we send an illustrated map of the local area to all guests showing the easiest route to get here and it clearly shows we are not in the town of Bacalar. From the highway there is an access road 3.5 km. long which is not paved but is in reasonably good shape and every day guests arrive in normal vehicles with no problems. The distance from the highway ensures that you do not hear any traffic noise here. Nevertheless , from time to time someone arrives here thinking we are in Bacalar . These two saw the high ratings on Trip Advisor and came of that alone but did not take the time to inform themselves as to our location . It is always best for the traveler anywhere in the world to take the time to inform her/himself as to their destination in order to ensure that there expectations can be met by the hotel. If you do not you might be pleased with the choice you made as is the case here. Of 255 comments on trip advisor we have 195 Excelent from guests whose expectations were met or exceeded by the beauty of the place, the cleanliness and the quality of the food. We have been awarded the Certificate of Excelence by Trip Advisor every year since we opened. We do have sometimes small groups from a tour operator. That particular day there was a group of 24 adults all retired and well behaved and not al all rude or noisy and after two hours they left.

Absolutely beautiful and peaceful! This stop was part of a tour package with Native Choice-which is excellent. The food was delicious and the waters in the lagoon breathtaking. You do not go there to be entertained. You go there to relax. I know massages are available but I can't comment on the room prices, etc.

I'll start by saying that I stayed here in February 2018 for two nights. I booked this hotel because I wanted to be on the Bacalar Lake but I wish I hadn't booked here.

THE BAD,
The photos make the water looks amazing, but that's not the case. The water is a darker murkier color than in the center of the lake, "downtown bacalar". Also, if you do decide to jump in the water be careful to not hurt your feet. As soon as I jumped for the first time I hit my foot on a rock and split my foot right open! Other parts of the lagoon have nice sandy bottom, this part of the lake is literally UNSWIMMABLE.

When booking with expedia the listing said the rooms had A/C but that was NOT the case! I was so upset because it's extremely humid and warm. I asked the manager if the A/C was working and they said they only turn it on a few months out of the year or something along those lines. I'm the type of person that has to sleep with an A/C on but since I couldn't, the best I could do was open the windows and have a cheap fan by my side. I literally woke up damp in my bed both mornings.

The breakfast is very basic, nothing special, maybe they don't have a big budget for food but I literally had to go to town to have a second breakfast because the included wasn't enough.

Also, the hotel is far from the main road. The road unpaved and its extremely bumpy, maybe around 6 miles of a dirt bumpy road, so be careful, not many taxis would want to put their car in those roads.

I also asked for a towel two times and I never received it.

*The hot water wasn't working during my stay, I'm not sure if its normal.

THE PROS

The hotel is secluded, not a lot of guests on the property. They have a few kayaks you can use during the day.

You do have a lake front view at this property but what's the use if you can't even jump in or actually swim.

I hate writing this review because I really wanted to like this place, I've traveled so much so my reviews have a lot of weight.

Beware.

We walked (along with others who were obviously going to the same place for a variety of tours) about 2-3 blocks to the Native Tours office. They provided a bus and tour guide to the ruins (very interesting) and then took us by a specially built vehicle (see below) for a delicious lunch and lovely afternoon at Bacalar. The trip back to the ship was only about 45 min. as I recall. We would advise not to rent a car and try it on your own because the access road to the resort is very long and extremely rough - you could tear up a rental vehicle, even a high clearance one. Get in touch w/ Native Tours or the resort itself.
