The cheapest backpacker accommodation I've seen in NZ and probably one of the best. Perched up on top of the hill all rooms have an amazing view of the valley and mountains around the Manapouri. The rooms we stayed in and the dorm rooms all had a wood fire keeping the room really warm and cosy - Loved having our...

What a hidden gem this place was. there were 4 of us looking for a place to crash in between hikes around the region. booked in one night and stayed for 3! Didn't want to leave There are about 6 wooden cabins scattered over a hill looking out over paradise, that sleep 2 to 3 people, in the most comfy...

The entree to Stonehill goes over a pretty rough gravelroad. On top you will meet the lovely owners of this unique place. Heartwarming welcome and a nice quality chat makes you feel at home. You can also book your cruise through the fiords. They are really keen to help you! The cottage is clean and cozy. Finally comfortable bunkbeds without...

I love this place. I stayed here for more than 2 weeks. The time here brought me back to the old times when people get close to nature and live simple lives. I can never forget this place. The manager, Jimmy, is amazing too. He showed me around and allowed me to join him chop the woods, etc. i like...

A lovely family runs the place. 20nzd (BBH price) for a bed in a 4 person cabin. There was a gas stove, pots/pans/cutlery/plates were provided, there was a small wood burner, there were no electric outlets in the cabin, but there was a working light and the beds are really solid. Bathrooms and toilets are in another house where you...

Stayed there for 2 nights to do the doubtful sound cruise and felt very comfortable there. Sure, you will always find something to improve (like the worn-out furniture on the verandas), but I had a lovely stay and Jimmy, the owner, is such a friendly and helpful guy, felt like coming home when I arrived there. Thumbs up and I...

I got to Freestone in a serendipitous way. I was heading elsewhere and had not been able to secure lodging when I picked up a Finnish woman hitchhiker headed toward Te Anau. Somehow we ended up calling Freestone Backpackers in Manipouri (Te Anau was sold out) to find her a place and the owner had a bed for my hitchhiker,...

Jimmy the owner offers great mountain views from some private rooms at his back packer lodge but beware of Jimmy the seamster. He wants $120 in cash before you inspect his room, just see the view from the deck. Then he disappears and your are left with no towels or toilet and no where to find them.. His Air B&B...

Hi, I'm sorry to hear you had such a bad experience. I'm Jimmy’s ex- partner and feel to clarify a few things said. I could say nasty things, but one thing I can say for sure he has always been a fantastic host and I admire his work ethic. With 70 he’s running the whole place alone now as Backpackers...
