The hotel was easy to locate but right between a main road and a side road. I went into reception and the staff were very polite and helpful. My room was on the quiet side of the 2 roads and seemed okay. It did have a lovely headboard feature but then light fittings were loose, the bathroom was okay. The...

This isn't our usual hotel whilst staying in the north but our other favourite was unavailable so we found the Highfield and what a gem it is. I wasn't sure at first as I thought it looked a little tired and but the room was cozy and very clean and comfortable. We slept really well and the view was beautiful....

This is a previous favourite so I was interested in seeing if the standards were being kept. They are. The room was immaculate and had a very comfortable bed with an excellent en suite. The over bath shower was powerful and easy to control. An added surprise was the small but perfect balcony. The staff, as ever, were friendly and...

Stayed here on 9th April as visiting a friend nearby and chose it due to the positive comments on Trip Advisor. Great value, lovely service (very friendly) and a really good option if you just want somewhere nice for a night or two, rather than staying in one of the city centre 'chain' hotels. Staying at a family-run hotel is...

We stayed at the Highfield Hotel, as usual, for our annual visit to the Great North Steam Fair at Beamish (9 miles away). This time we paid a little extra for a superior room with a balcony which had a view over the valley to the The Earl of Durham's Monument on Penshaw Hill. The room was a good size,...

My husband and i wanted a night away but didn't want to be too far from home. I found this lovely place and it had everything in one place so we could relax. We arrived and were greeted by a lovely lady at reception, we booked our table in the Thai restaurant (inside the hotel ) then went up to...

This is a few miles outside of Durham, about £12 to £15 in a taxi. Very friendly greeting when arrived, room was spacious albeit a little worn round edges. V comfy bed, basic amenities and great shower. I would stay here again, not as plush as a lot of hotels but great value for money
