The Headlands Hotel is beautifully located (as the name would imply) on a headland looking up and down the beautiful Illawarra coastline. The facility consists of 3 separate contemporary style buildings: 2 for accommodation and the 3rd for the hotel and function rooms.
We had a one bedroom apartment which was very spacious and had a great outlook down the coast and up to the escarpment. There was a large balcony and it was very pleasant to sit outside for a drink and snacks. The apartment itself was bright, clean and comfortably furnished.
Not all studios or apartments have ocean views, so if this is important to you, be very specific when you make the booking.
A couple of comments regarding the apartment. Firstly, it had one design feature that I simply don't understand, namely when the toilet is separate to the main bathroom but without the inclusion of a small sink to enable you to wash your hands. Also, whilst the apartment had a kitchen, it was very sparsely equipped and the preparation of anything more than a basic meal would be impossible. On the subject of features, I would have thought that rooms in a hotel of this quality would possess either a coffee plunger and a couple of sachets of grounds, or even better, a coffee machine and a few pods. Frankly, nowadays the instant coffee provided is more appropriate for a cheaper motel.
As the apartments and studios are adjacent to the hotel, it's really convenient for a bite to eat or a drink. Food quality is OK but not outstanding. A better option is to use the free shuttle bus (meet in the carpark near the beach or check online) and go to the Imperial Hotel at Clifton.
It's only a short walk to the beach at Sharkies, or Austinmer a 10 minute walk down the road.
Criticisms aside, this is the only resort on this beautiful part of the coast and it provides well located, convenient and comfortable accommodation for a few days.

last year 2019 we visited and stayed for 5 days at the end of Jan 2019, great service, happy and friendly staff, and a great location, very clean at the time. So we decided to book again, this time for 10 days during the Dec 2019/Jan 2020 boxing day till the 4th of Jan. The first morning we went out for the day, came back and rooms were untouched. i contacted reception and was advised our room should be serviced shortly. A hour later, still no service, i contacted reception and they advised the housekeepers have left for the day. The next day, i called at 2pm as again we had not had room serviced, no clean towels, no toliet paper, no dishwashing tablets , etc... again, no service, reception brought me towels. The next day, our room was meant to get a " full service" beds were made and fresh towels were given. That was it. no vacuming, no wipe over of benches, no loading of dishwasher, no cleaning of shower or toilet, nothing. this went on and on... the receptionists were VERY unfriendly, one in particular made sure she never made eye contact, not one smile, not one im sorry, nothing, a wet face cloth has more personality. Its a shame, the hotel is in prime location, the food isnt great, the service is terrible but if a staff member actually smiled and if they bothered to service the rooms properly then this would be a nice place to stay. very disappointed after paying over $3300 for 9 nights. Never again.

You cannot fault the location at the headland in Austinmer with stunning beaches on either side. The Bistro is lovely and there is plenty of free parking for hotel guests. The rooms however were quite bland and cold. The property is only 3 years old and still presents as newish. We had a deluxe garden view apartment which had a full kitchen and was very spacious. The walls were almost completely bare and the overall feeling was that the place badly needed an interior decorator. It was completely lacking in color. When we arrived our bedroom blind was completely broken so we could not get light or air. The staff was unable to do anything and offered zero compensation. I would say that service level was 3 star and the rooms might be slightly better but in need of some flair. Avoid the rooms that face a wall if at possible and ask to get on as high a floor as possible as these have better outlooks no matter what direction you are facing. If you get an ocean view room I would request a room facing north as this it the better aspect.

Your feedback regarding the blinds has also been followed up on and we will be getting our blinds updated in the next couple of weeks! Spent 3 nights in penthouse as part of our replacement honeymoon (we were supposed to go to Morocco).

The view was magnificent (we faced south looking towards Wollongong). The room had washer/dryer, full sized fridge, everything needed to cook (does one cook whilst on honeymoon?)

Beautiful, comfortable, large bed. Very spacious room. Secure parking and working elevator.

The location is hard to beat..... Standing on a small headland, surrounded by the ocean on three sides.

The bistro at the hotel (pub) next door served good meals, but plenty of food options in Thirroul (next suburb south) or even Coledale (next suburb north).

Highly recommend.

Congratulations on your wedding Brett! We are so thrilled that you had such a great time together at Headlands (One definitely does not need to cook whilst on their honeymoon!) We are so glad you got to enjoy the view and a good meal at our Brasserie! Our team will be delighted to read this review. Thanks again and we wish you both a long and happy marriage. After 3 years of saying “we must go back” we finally made it.

Last time we stayed in an “ocean view 1 bedroom apartment” … this time we chose the cheaper “ocean view suite”.

On both visits the standard of accommodation was completely acceptable … nothing dripped or was broken, and everything worked as it should ... but we decided that on future visits we will go for the more up-market (more spacious) 1 bedroom apartment … or may even invite family and share a 2 bedroom penthouse.

We look forward to returning.

We stayed two nights in a one bedroom ocean view apartment. The apartment was very spacious and was complete with everything you could want or need. It was modern and stylish and very comfortable.

Negative experience - We paid extra for a sofa bed for our 2 children aged 6 and 4 to share. The sofa bed was broken and unacceptable. I can’t believe they still made up the bed as it was very clearly broken! We were told that they may be able to prop it up or move the mattress to the floor! For $360 a night this is not a solution! Whilst they were investigating what to do, I went to buy some food from the bistro to feed the family. I mentioned our situation to the manager Andrew who immediately took action. Staff brought in a replacement section of the sofa bed and drilled away for about 40 minutes to fix the bed. Next - the mattress was horrendous. The whole mattress had wire springs poking through! No one would ever sleep on that thing. So I called reception again and asked for a mattress topper. I was told there should be a spare doona in the cupboard. Again - not a solution! I was really frustrated now so I demanded a mattress topper and they were able to deliver. If they want to charge that kind of money, then they need to provide suitable bedding and provide solutions immediately without trying to get away with makeshift alternatives.

We were told the hotel was fully booked and yet there didn’t seem to be that many people around. There didn’t seem to be much of an atmosphere.

The pool could have been a little warmer, but we still enjoyed a quick swim.

On a positive note, the bed in the main bedroom was great and the pillows were excellent.

We ate in the bistro for dinner each night and the food was very good. The coffee was surprisingly excellent and we were very impressed!

I don’t think we will return to stay. Not enough of a positive vibe. We would return to the bistro though if we were in the area and wanted a drink or meal with friends.

Hi Q8055JHannal We appreciate you taking the time to provide us with feedback from your most recent visit. We are glad that you found your apartment to be modern, stylish and had everything you wanted for your stay. We are so sorry you experienced issues with your children's sofa bed. This is not something that has occurred previously so it did take a moment to find an alternate solution. We were then able to get a staff member to replace the sofa bed and send up the mattress topper. We were booked out during your stay and are still heavily booked as a result of the school holidays. Our venue is usually much more festive but as a result of current COVID regulations, we have had to minimise the amount of mingling and activities we have operating around the hotel. Again we are very sorry for the issues which occurred during your stay and we hope you do decide to visit us in the future when restrictions have eased things begin to operate as normal. Kind regards The Headlands Team

We discovered the headlands hotel while exploring the south coast for somewhere to have lunch. We were so very pleasantly surprised. The restaurant area is huge, with different areas facing different ocean views, so no matter where the wind blows from you’re protected. They have a funky dumpling caravan and a comprehensive Australian menu. I had a rump steak that was tender, juicy and cooked to perfection. This venue has capability for large groups and can seat up to 20 without pre booking. The service was a little slow, due mainly to the crowds there but the ordering system is slick and efficient.
I loved the vibe with live musician in one bar and water views all around. In the words of Arnold Schwarzenegger.....I’ll be back!!

Dropped by here instead of Scarborough hotel as it wasn't as busy. The views are nice, the food was average (although cant go wrong with fish & chips) THAT COST $28!? Service and atmosphere was below average - They couldnt provide freshly cracked pepper for the boys' $30 steaks "due to covid" but yet the waitress' fingers could squash my salad upon serving..

OVERALL experience was poor - we had a group of 12. My cousin ordered the poke bowl ($26) and had ONE bite and she couldn't eat the rest. We asked for a refund as it hadn't been touched and we had to get on the road but we were told by the Manager 'no, that's how it's made' ('too bad!'). We were offered something else to order, but given the experience im not sure if that was the best solution.. My sister tried it and even she couldn't eat it and she can eat cardboard... They eventually gave us a refund after I asked to speak to the manager.

Mark (below) couldnt have put it better "Mediocre bland food from a boring and expensive prices, aka RSL Food at boutique costs". I was going to stay at this hotel for my anniversary last year - SO glad we didn't. Shocking.

Hi there Sydney Gust, We appreciate you taking the time to share this with us. I have had a chat to the manager who was on duty and I would like to provide some further insight. As I’m sure you can appreciate there have been some changes made around the hotel in response to COVID. Some of these include only allowing 10 people per table which is why your groups were separated. We have removed all commonly shared utensils including the salt and pepper shakers which we have replaced with individual sachets. As per our current hotel policy, our staff did have their hair tied back, they were wearing gloves and were also following our stringent COVID safety plan which includes frequently washing and sanitising their hands. The Poke bowl which was refunded because of the yuzu dressing is usually well received but we understand it is not to everyone’s pallet. Kind regards The Headlands Team

We booked a penthouse room thinking it would be an extravagance and something special, it was not cheap and the experience was far from positive.
Our room 3201 was like an empty function room. It was not furnished anything like the pictures on the website. There was no bath and one two seater couch and one occasional chair to sit on for a family of four.

When we called reception to complain they said they took no responsibility as all the apartments were individually owned. They had to bring another chair up from the reception area so that our family of four each had a chair to sit in whilst watching TV.

There were no lounge chairs on the huge deck that looked out to the sea. It would have been a perfect venue for a cocktail party of 50+ but for our family it was a cold sterile room with minimal furniture and no features you would associate with a penthouse room.

We were offered a $100 discount which did not make up for the fact that we had paid over $500 per night. A very disappointing experience.

Hi Kristen, I understand you were disappointed that your room was not as you anticipated. As stated on our website and as mentioned by our staff, due to multiple accommodation buildings and views, featured images may not be the actual room you receive and room setup and furnishings do vary. None of our rooms feature a bathtub and this is not something that is advertised anywhere on our website. Our balconies are very large to take advantage of the ocean views which wrap around the apartments, but we understand that this may look sparse. While styling does vary, each apartment has been fully furnished inside and there is also a lounge and dining setting on the balcony. Our Accommodation Manager offered you a $100 discount as a gesture of goodwill. If you consider staying at Headlands in the future please do not hesitate to get in contact with our friendly team and we will be happy to assist you in booking the room you are after. Kind regards The Headlands Team

We booked a room for our daughter and son in law to stay after their wedding.
Room was large great position etc but a few negatives. My daughter arrived there to get ready for the wedding and there was no full length mirror in a room the costs $350+ a night.
I organised and paid for wine and chocolates to be delivered to their room on their return and was charged for it, it never arrived. I had to contact the hotel this morning to request a refund and by the conversation that was going on it seems the wine may have been sent to another room to people with the same surname, lucky them but chattel to me. When I asked for a refund I was asked to verify my CC no. which again wasn't mine. It's very disappointing when you try and support local businesses that charge top $ prices and a fairly straight forward request can't be done. Maybe a review of procedures is required.
