My family of 4 spent 7 nights / 8 days at RIU Dunamar in a family suite. We loved having the kids in the same 'room' as us, and loved having 2 showers for 4 people. It cut down on a lot of the time we would have spent getting ready. We had a partial ocean view and were able to see the sunrise in the morning over the ocean from our balcony and the sunset from the hallway outside our room. From the moment we stepped onto the property, we felt at home. The asthetic and design is absolutely beautiful. Everyone is so friendly, hardworking, and accommodating. Housekeeping and maintenance never stop working. Using the RIU app was seamless. We had an issue with our AC unit in our room one day, and within an hour of requesting assistance, it was fixed. We were able to book activities, see the schedule of events for the day, and look at a property map, which was extremely helpful, especially the first few days when we had no idea what we were doing. It was also so easy to reorder water or soda for our minibar, and everything was refilled promptly. The resort is spacious and never feels too busy, but it is also easy to navigate, even for my 7 year old. The beach was magical, and the pools and waterparks were incredible. The foam pool party and the Friday Night Neon party were a big hit for all of us. As for the food, I think the people leaving bad reviews are looking for things to complain about. The staff is literally cooking food continuously for hundreds and hundreds of people. You may not like everything available, but there are options for everyone. The breakfast buffet was incredible every day! Same with lunch! We loved the Asian restaurant for dinner and we actually went twice because it was so good. We never had a long wait for any of the specialty restaurants, and the longest we waited was 10 minutes for the steakhouse. We felt pampered and waited on constantly. The nightly entertainment was always amazing, and everyone is extremely talented. We loved the drink cart at the pools and the drink service at the beach and the service at the bars was fast and friendly. Special shout out to our favorite girl, Adriana, our waitress at the buffet. She made us feel like family from the first day and we adore her so much! She is so diligent and truly went above and beyond every day. We had the most amazing time, and honestly, leaving was very, very hard. Highly recommend using scuba caribe to book a jungle cruise and definitely recommend going to Isla Mujeres for a day. The bellmen are able to arrange transportation to and from the hotel to Ultimar Ferry. They let you know the prices immediately and set everything up for you. We hope to come back when the temperatures are a little cooler, because spoiler alert - it is HOT in August. Thank you RIU for helping make our family vacation magical.

We recently stayed here with a group of friends and we were amazed!! Not only was the weather great but the resort is almost brand new and they’re very careful to handle any issue that arises immediately! Someone cut their foot on a loose tile and they were instantly in the water with goggles repairing it! We met some great staff who made sure our week was fantastic. Two of the best bartenders Rene and Aguileamo took care of us all week and went above and beyond over and over! Paco and Kenny were the two entertainment staff members who called us out each time there was an activity and made sure to include us in the many many games of pool volleyball! We were all from Michigan and they would challenge our whole group each day to participate! Giving us a personal invitation to the fun! We also were treated extra special in one of the restaurants by Fray, and he made one or two of our meals extra fantastic! The environmental service team was so quick to clean our room and had I caught their name I would thank them personally for handling our rooms with extra cleanliness!! There were only 2 downfalls to this resort. 1: each night there would only be the buffet and one restaurant open though they had other restaurants they wouldn’t be open causing a long line at the door or another trip to the same ole buffet. And 2: one of our friends got sick on the trip and threw up on his way to the bathroom his wife cleaned it up with whatever she could find to use at 2am thinking it would be too loud to call housekeeping at that time of the night, the next day they were locked out of their room and told they had to pay to replace the towels she used and would not be allowed in the room until the issue was cleared up!?! A. A note on the door would’ve been a much gentler response to address the situation rather than locking someone out of the room who’s already feeling ill and B. The towels can possibly cost that much and should be replaced by the hotel not the sick guests.

Aside from these two issues it was a wonderful trip!!

Just returned from a 7 day visit, I rate this facility a 88, everything met or exceeded my expectations except the entertainment, which is secondary, my wife and I love cruising and except for cruises entertainment, I would rate this facility better than a cruise. food selection, variety and quality and free specialty restaurants A, service personnel A, due to always coming around for help, and service. Tips are not required but my agent suggested $1 per person per meal, very reasonable, which we met or exceeded, higher at the specialty restaurants. I never felt the servers felt bad if people did not leave a tip, always a smile .The room with piano entertainment and desserts was great, very high quality variety of desserts, an extra on cruises Safety and hygiene rating A , we were always temperature checked and given a squirt of hand sanitizer when entering a food venue, and required face covering except at the pool and while eating, but walking for food at the buffet face masks required. I felt fairly safe with the covid pandemic ongoing. My wife and I highly recommend this RIU facility and will return in the future

First the beds are not as advertised, in some rooms they are actually two twin sized beds pushed together. I was told I was going to have 2 full beds. The lobby is slippery and I slipped as I was leaving. The hours of operation of the pools are not long enough for a hotel with nothing to do close by. The pool water is hot and the pools are small and crowded. The food and drink selection is horrible. The food was not even good at the select restaurants. They should have better selection or room service. The food in the 24 hr. Sports Bar is only cold sandwiches and burgers next to one microwave. Most of the staff is not pleasant and were rude. The theater area is the only thing left to do after the pools closed and there were only 3 servers for a large group a people, so a drink could take a long time to get. Upon check out I was charged for towels that supposedly had vomit, but no one in my room ever threw up. The housekeeper never left a note about theses supposed vomited towels, so that I could have gone to reception to question. I just paid the extra charge because my transportation was already waiting to take me to the airport. The shower has a glass where the people in the room can see the person showering silhouette. Not suitable for a family hotel. They need more beer selection. Only offered Dos X. The only thing I though was good, was the water pressure of the shower. There was a nice spa hut at the far end of the beach that had wonderful service, highly recommend.

When I arrived, I realized my passport was missing. The assistance I received from Manuel at the entrance to the hotel was amazing. He assisted me to go to the luggage room and take everything out of my bags with dignity, he reached out to the Sunwing rep, he spoke with the manager and came back and indicated I could check in with my Sunwing documentation and driver’s licence. He is a super positive individual and a great ambassador for the hotel. We were there for a friends wedding and were eventually able to enjoy the hotel and everything it had to offer. My only complaint would be the specialty restaurants were not that impressive ( we tried Italian and the steakhouse). It is a very large hotel and was not at capacity for our stay. We were always able to access hairs at the pool and never had to wait in any long lines.

We stayed here in January and had a fantastic time. Check in was quick and easy, I asked which room we had been given and we was offered a choice of rooms. We chose a room looking into the middle looking over the entertainment area with a sea view.

All of the staff that we spoke to were all so helpful and friendly especially JJ, Diego, Jessicia, Julian (thanks for all the shots!) the guy who pushes the drinks trolley cart round all day and all of the entertainment staff Bryan, Candy, Kenny, Paco, all were amazing and worked so hard every day all day. All of the cleaning staff worked so hard to keep the resort clean and tidy all day aswel they never stopped.

There was never any issues to find sun loungers by the pools in the day, we stayed by the activity pool while we were there, where they had games involving all the guests.

Entertainment at night was always good, including the Michael Jackson show. The beach party on the Friday night and the foam party on the Saturday were the best. We visited the club on site Pacha alot while we were there which was very enjoyable! We also paid to go into Cancun to go on the Coco Bongos tour through Maurice the rep who is by the activity pool in the day selling the tickets, taxis were put on for us and we was looked after the whole night.

All of the buffets were full of variety throughout the day for lunch and even more variety in the evenings. We visited Bamboo the Asain restaurant several times as it was our favourite, we had to wait about 30 mins on a couple of occasions for a table but we went to the bar and got a cocktail while we waited so this wasn’t an issue, it was definitely worth the wait. During the day there is a BBQ by the pool areas which we had a few times.

The housekeepers kept the room lovely and clean while we stayed and the fridge and optics were restocked every 2 days, we ran out of water one day so I rang reception and they brought some straight up no issue.

Would definitely return to this hotel.

We stayed at Riu Dunamar Jan 4th-11th. This was our third time in Cancun and the first thing I’ll say is this resort is not close to the airport or the hotel zone. It was about a 50min ride from the hotel, which we knew going into it so it wasn’t a huge deal. We had an ocean view room on the 3rd floor, and I would say it was a good view but not great. The hotel itself is a little far from the ocean so you’re not right on top of the sea like some other resorts but the view was still good. The hotel is unbelievably clean, there are people cleaning every area all times of the day. Housekeeping did great cleaning our room whenever we needed it. Service was good, not great, but with the cheaper price we paid for the week it was to be expected. Pools are very big and there are plenty of seats at all pools and the beach. Drink service at the pools is done by a drink cart, not servers like other resorts, which I prefer servers personally. Beach was too windy for us to spend much time at but I will say their private beach is massive with tons of chairs. The food was pretty good all around. Best buffet I’ve had at any all inclusive but the service was a little slower than I’ve had in the past. Pompeya is pretty much a buffet you just order an entree. The Asian restaurant is good, but it is all buffet. Kulinarium is the only restaurant that you actually order all your food but we had our best meal of the week there, the grouper was fantastic. Huge out door theater for nightly entertainment with plenty of seating. Bottom line: we got a great deal on the price which was a lot less than we normally pay in Cancun so that being considered I would say it was worth the money. Food is decent, not great, service is good, and the resort is very clean. Lots of kids my suggestion would be to make one of the pools adults only, but it is a family resort so can’t really complain.

Just came back from our one week holiday at the Riu Dunumar. I saw the reviews before I left but I never trust reviewers that have just one contribution, even if they are positive. What are the odds they actually stayed at the exact same place you are looking at?

Anyways we were 6 people (2 adults, 2 teens, 2 kids) in adjoining rooms at the hotel. Everything was spic and span and the beds were comfortable. The shower pressure was divine and the wifi connection was better than some places I have visited near home in Canada.

I can’t say enough nice things about the employees, everyone was kind and helpful. It was my daughter’s birthday and I was very happy with the additional touches they did to make her feel special.

The buffet food was very delicious, much better than what usually comes to mind when you think buffet. Really great variety and quality of food. Our favourite restaurant was the Steakhouse, the others were good, but I wouldn’t have gone more than once. Unfortunately we didn’t have time to try the Japanese restaurant.

I am so glad we booked in Costa Mujeres as the sargassum levels are much lower there than further south. We had fantastic times at the beach, beautiful turquoise water and white sands. We used the kayak and the catamarans several times (free).

There were employees on the grounds who would ask if we were interested in excursions but no one was pushy and certainly no one on the beach hawking cheap jewelry/services on the beach like in Puerto Vallarta.

The adults thoroughly enjoyed the swim up bar and the kids loved the water park and other pools. Truly something for everyone.

I read some complaints about the evening entertainment. I think the kids shows were fine. The 9:30 shows were ok, but really if you go to an all inclusive, don’t expect a New York Broadway performance. I could tell the entertainers worked really hard on the choreography and the shows were much more creative than what I have seen in the Dominican or Cuba.

One word of warning for those who travel in July. The heat is just stifling. I don’t know how the employees could work in long sleeves, masks and pants. There’s a nice breeze along the beach and of course air conditioning, but when we ventured on the Colectivo to Isla Mujeres and I think I lost 5 lbs just by sweating.

Overall I would highly recommend Riu Dunamar. Thank you for the great memories!

Myself, husband and 17 yr old son from UK stayed here for 1 week in June 22.
Positives - hotel very clean, excellent WiFi accessible all over resort, food and drink excellent, sports bar was good and snacks available in bar, staff were attentive offering good service. Swim up bar is good but no under 18’s are allowed in these pools. Snack BBQ for lunch is amazing.

Negatives - frosted glass window in shower through to bedroom not great for privacy when sharing with teenagers. No plugs near mirror to use straighteners etc is a minor inconvenience. Most days room was not cleaned and towels restocked till about 5pm when we were back in room trying to rest or get showered and changed, evening entertainment is run by local Riu reps not TUI and due to guests being from a wide range of nationalities then reps spoke in Spanish and English which can be difficult when you don’t understand bits of what they are saying. Evening entertainment was not enjoyable whilst we were there there was a silent disco, band singing, abba tribute there was nothing that was interactive like quiz’s games etc. some guests were not very considerate when coming back to rooms late at night or early mornings and could be very noisy.
Shop on site is very expensive if you are needing to buy any essentials.

Overall we did enjoy our holiday but Riu Dunamar location is quite far out from cancun centre. I would return to Mexico but would select another hotel for future trip.

The first full day we were there, one of the employees at the Tequila pool bar drugged my margarita. I woke up 8 hours later, thankfully my cousin, who i traveled with, was not drugged as well or i doubt we would still be alive today. I barely had any of my drink, maybe 3 sips and do not remember anything the rest of the day. needless to say, my trip was ruined. Neither of us wanted to take a chance on another drink. I wanted to go home right then. So scary to have someone who works for the resort doing this. especially when they are preying on young women who clearly had no men with them. You pay for an all inclusive to enjoy food and drink, take the drink away and all you're left with is an expensive trip for mediocre food.
The hotel was decently clean, but our room had a see through shower, which was extremely uncomfortable to shower in, knowing the other person in your room could watch you shower (wouldn't have been bad for a couple staying in the room).
Food was mediocre. The check in person urged us to download the app so we could look up the restaurants menus and hours. However, the app did not match up with the actual hours/days the restaurants and the signs in front of the restaurants changed daily as well, making it hard to eat at the restaurants because you would plan on going the next day, and get down there that day, they would have moved the open sign to another day.
The covid testing is a joke, they barely stick the swab up your nose, as they do not want you to test positive, because they will have to put you up in the hotel for 2 weeks at their expense.
The nightly entertainment is very loud and sometimes goes until after midnight. The night before we left to go home, the music and entertainment didn't end until after 2am, making getting up to leave at 5am a drag.

Dear Lindsay, Thank you for choosing to stay with us at Hotel Riu Dunamar. We are deeply concerned to hear about your experience. This certainly does not reflect the typical service of our property. Our sincere apologies for the disappointment. At the same time we are very surprised to read your comment in regards to one of our barmen at the pool bar. Of course, this is a serious accusation. However, it is remarkable that the dissatisfaction you are describing did not come to our attention up to now. At the moment we do not have enough information in which to investigate to determine which of our team members you had this encounter with. If you could provide more details via your travel agency, or only in case of direct booking our After Travel Complaints Department via complaints@riu.com, we would appreciate the effort. We hope to have the chance to welcome you back for a much-improved stay. With our best wishes we remain, Hotel Riu Dunamar Online Reputation Manager

No Mountain Dew, They had something similar to a Fanta Orange, and something like 7-UP. They have Pepsi as their main fountain drinks and what’s stocked in you bar fridge. I too like Mountain Dew. But nothing quite like it here.

I saw men in shorts with no problem getting in. I didn't see anyone wearing sandals With shirts, as long as they are not tank tops. If it's the buffet restaurant, anything goes. No reservations needed for the specialty restaurants. Arrive early though, at least 15 minutes before they open.

Answer from James M
No beach bar, but the beach is right on the edge of the hotel, there are waiters who come round and take drink orders or you can walk back to the pool bars and take your drinks back to the beach. Keep some low USD for tips if they bring the drinks to you
