Go for the individual villas...the view and the feeling it gives you is worth every penny!! The staff might appear to be a bit rustic but they really go way out of their way to meet and exceed your needs. They have the right attitude and the food is excellent. We wanted veggie food and they prep[ared a very good vegetarian spread thrice a day specially for us.

Only negative is the access road, but then there is nothing much the resort managemnt can do about it. Also, if this place was easily accessible, I doubt it would stay this serene!! All in all, a hidden gem!

The rooms could do with an electric kettle to make tea/coffee which is not there at this point.

We had a trip of a lifetime here.
We had booked a honeymoon package, we were two couples and booked the Nalukettu rooms. Believe us the 1st floor Nalukettu rooms are the best. The food, the views, the rooms, the location, the staff and everything that was included was awesome and really made it a super value for money. Recommended to all.

We went to Wayanad on a family trip from the 8th to 10th July - 3 days and 2 nights. It was a package deal which included all 3 meals, bed tea, ayurvedic massage for all 4 of us (My mom, sister and brother-in-law being the other 3) and a speed-boat ride at the Banasura Dam reservoir. I had seen the rating and read the review here and although it wasn't ranked in the top 10, I went with my instincts and chose to go here. I was hoping the place would be as pretty as seen in the pictures on their official website. I was wrong. It was wayyyy better!! It was b-brilliant!!

Ok.. I am getting ahead of myself here. Let me start from the beginning. We left Calicut at around 9:30 AM and the trip took around 2:45 minutes. We went in a Hyundai Santro and I would advise not to.. seriously! The last 1-2 kms to the resort are pretty bad - It's a metaled road for 1km and then just rock and rubble for next half. The sign boards to this resort start only a 4-5 miles before the resort itself and there won't be too many people around to ask for directions. Adding to that, there are multiple resorts that have the name Banasura. The guys at the resort know and understand this and hence made sure to call me multiple time to make sure I don't get lost. I had no trouble with that though since we had hired a driver who knew the route. I suggest you do the same.

Just a 100 meters before the entrance, we could hear a waterfall and the recent rains had made the foliage around us rich green. I'll let you know about the waterfalls in a while.

As soon as we reached the resort, I saw the 'Naalukettu' building which was exactly like I had seen it on the website. It looked even better with the mist-covered hills in the backdrop. The Manager of the resort Mr Binod welcomed us into the Naalukettu and offered us welcome drinks. After a brief and uncomplicated check-in procedure, we were escorted to out twin-cottage. The twin and single cottages are not visible at first glance. They are set on the slopes of the hill with an amazing view of the dam catchment area. Both the cottages are nearby and yet provide ample privacy.

The twin cottage consists of 2 bedrooms with bath attached and an attached balcony each. The central room has a semi-large dining table which can seat 6-8 and a TV with DTH. This room has the entry to main balcony. Both the bedrooms have wooden flooring and look thoroughly cosy. Apart from the dim lighting in the cottage, I had very little to complain about. Clean linen and clean bathrooms are what I look for first and they were indeed very clean.

From the time we arrived (12:30), we spent the entire day at the resort just soaking in the beautiful view and the atmosphere. It rained heavily after lunch and it was just the perfect setting for a peaceful sleep. In the evening we had out head and shoulder massages (which came with the package) and was something I would avoid the next time I go there. It was painful. *shudders*.

The food and service were exceptional. If you are not used to Kerala cuisine and not interested in being adventurous, you could let them know your preferences. On request, they had food sent to the room and the only complaint you might have is the excessive quantity of food they send! :)

Please do not forget to close all the net-doors by sun down. It is a forested area and you cannot complain about the insects if you don't do your part. You might want to take some bug spray though.

The next day, we decided to have the breakfast at the restaurant. The view from there is simply breathtaking. They have glass running from roof to floor and having food there is a treat for all the senses. After breakfast, we set out to explore the resort and it's surroundings. We remembered the sound of the falls we had heard while we entering the resort and trooped off in that direction. There was no direct path to falls but we found one nevertheless and the act of adventure added to fun. We could not access the bottom of the falls but the top of the falls was good enough. The best part was that we had it all to ourselves. We set out for a safari after lunch but in retrospect, I feel I should have continued on exploring the area outside the resort.

The next day we went on a soft trek towards the dam catchment area. Well, it was intended to be a short walk but ended up being a mini-trek. The trek route had wild-elephant dung strewn along its path and hence we decided not to go deep into the jungle. We spotted another small waterfall on the way and it is only when the leeches started feeling thirsty did we decided to go back. Advice : Do not forget to take salt along when trekking.

3 days just did not seem long enough but we had to leave. It was the best trip I had in a very long time. My mom loved it for the peace and quiet. My sister loved it for all the small bugs and butterflies that she captured on her camera and I loved it for the adventure and feel of it. It has something for everyone... well.. perhaps not much for the kids though.

In short,

Pros:

1) Secluded and serene location
2) Amazing view and accommodation for a very reasonable rate.
3) Delectable food and wonderful service
4) Excellent quality and maintenance of the cottages.
5) Good options of trekking near the resort

Cons:

1) Quite far away from the tourist spots in Wayanad
2) Ayurvedic head and shoulder massage was 'painfully' disappointing
3) Poor lighting in the rooms
4) Carom board and TT provided at the resort but barely usable.
5) Did not provide advice on trekking paths and did not offer to provide a guide.
6) No gym, swimming pool or other fancy stuff. (If present, I wouldn't have wasted my time on those)

The negatives do not out-weigh the good points of the resort. For all those nature lovers who'd prefer to stay at the resort and soak it in and have a relaxing time, this is for you! Sorry for rambling on for I don't know for how many words. Hope this helps in making your choice.

PS: I'd go there when it rains and it would be cheaper during the monsoons.

This has to be the most unfulfilled and grossly unsatisfactory holiday experience ever (22 to 25 June) - courtesy Banasura Island Resort. What was supposed to be a surprise element in the holiday with my wife turned out to be our most unpleasant experience ever.

Whilst we had to deal with a host of issues. (explained below), the trigger point for us was the fact that we were deprived of good quality sleep for ALL OF the 3 nights (which I am sure you would agree is a MUST for a person on holiday) due to absence of "BASIC" electricity supply during mid-night in our room. Though we accommodated ourselves on the first night thinking it could be some temporary power outage issue, we were literally feeling suffocated on the second and third night as the new room (yes, we were also downgraded from Honeymoon cottage to Superior cottage as well) did not have adequate ventilation and due to rain / insect issues, we could not even keep the balcony windows open. We had to call Jimmy at almost 3am on both nights to have at least the "BASIC" electricity being made available to us. What is more surprising is the fact that we had even requested on the third day to ensure that we have enough power available for the entire night, but even that genuine request did not come through in effect ! It leaves us to wonder - how can a resort not have back-up power to run even one night and for one room (as there were no other occupants other than us)..

Other key issues:
- No intercom facilities : By far, in my travelling experience, I have never seen any hotel in this price band which does not have an intercom facility - and in this case, we are dealing with a resort !!. We would have made at least 30-40 calls to various personnel from our personal cell phones to place any requests / communicate any concerns and believe me, this is the first of its kind ever - and the most ridiculous as well.

- Shifting to a lower category room : We had booked Honeymoon Cottage which, we understand, is the most premium category room available in the resort. However, during heavy rain the bathroom roof leaked continuously and the lock was not working as well. Though, the lock and leakage issues in the normal course, could have been sorted out in a couple of hours max, we had to shift to the Superior Cottage room for the remaining period which left us with quite a distasteful experience.

- No 24x7 support : Again, given that the resort is remotely situated, it was surprising to see that there is no full-time receptionist / maintenance staff, etc. Also, there seems to be no back up in case of any medical emergencies. We were not even made aware of what the property offers in terms of recreation, package details, etc.

- Basic facilities : The resort does not have adequate internal lightning and it became difficult to even leave the room post 7ish as the environment turns pitch dark - even a normal routine walk post dinner was deprived and there was no other option but to stay confined in our rooms !

The rooms were also not adequately cleaned - in fact, we had specifically caught an insect in a glass but the same was not cleared even after we had given the room for maintenance. Even the bathroom door used to squeak continuously and the continuous beeps from the dying inverter battery too joined the chorus (adding to the woes of the sleep deprived couple).
Also, it took us 30 minutes to have even drinking water delivered to our room in the night - in fact, in the first instance we were told that the store room was shut and the water could not be provided .. how insane is that ! Then we were also told that there are wild animals in the property due to which it was risky for them to provide our request .. Hello, wild animals inside the Resort ! We were not even made aware of this !!
All in all, the above issues highlight the plight we have gone through during our not so memorable stay. I hope that the management takes note of the issues seriously and act in a swift manner. Am sure, if the above basics are not taken care of promptly, it will be a matter of time your resort may not see the face of any customer (despite the excellent views your property offers - and I need to admit that it is breathtaking).

This place is not good for stay. The pictures in the sites is completely different than what you will get in reality. We four families travel there and we had very bad experience in this hotel. The room are horrible. Not wroth of spending your money to stay here. The rooms are filthy with dirty bed sheet, dead insects . Hotel never done any pest control and you feel scared to sleep in those rooms with kids. The rooms are very small, specially the Delux rooms. There are few deluxe room which are worse than stay in even slums.Foods are not that great. The Dining area stinks with dirty table mats (Which never washed for months). The recreation area was so dirty, you feel like not sitting in the place. I am sorry to say, the hotel management did not spend extra penny to make guest experience better. More over I found Mr Vinod is very arrogant and not co operative to listen to our needs.

you trust my words and better book another resort/ homestay if you want to travel to Waynard. You may end up living in rooms which are terrific and repent coming to Banasura Island Retreat.

Where to start.....it was nightmare to summarise. The location is good, no doubt abt that but the rooms and property in total is in poor condition. Rooms were horrible and very badly maintained. Noisy fans, spider webs all around, stinking linen, dirty toilets, dusty furnitures etc etc.

It's not at all a child friendly resort especially if your child is bit sensitive abt dust. We were 5 couples n took 5 rooms out there. All of them got same pathetic rooms. As we reached there little late in the night, we had to take that rooms. Even the manager mr Radakrishnan 's response was so cold. He was like resorts are like this only and nothing can be done now because we said the complaints after an hour or so.
Even the restaurant is not hygienic.dirty table clothes n cutlery.Food served was really pathetic.more over arrogant behaviour of staffs when we asked to clean those.
If you really want to have a relaxing holiday please don't think about going to this place.

we zeroed in on this resort after reading positive reviews on tripadvisor. we stayed here as a family of 4 with aged parents and a child over the puja vacations(Oct) which was a very busy tourist season in wayanad, accordingly the rates, i believe were hiked up to exorbitant amount. we stayed in the nalukettu rooms - we had 2 rooms booked for ourselves. the resort was obviously not prepared for our stay, even though we reached only in the evening, though check in time is at 11:00 AM. the rooms were ill prepared - there were no towels, phone was not working(it was not fixed for the entire duration of our stay), geyser was not working, balcony was full of spider webs and was not cleaned, no toilet rolls in one of the rooms, no glasses or cups to have water. this is just to mention a few of the issues. there was no kettle and tea making facility in the room, even though it was available, we had to request for it. staff lacks basic training, so when they get the kettle, they forget to get the cups, when they gets the cups, they forget to get the spoons! Everything needs to be requested, nothing is done proactively. Food is average, again not worth the money you shell out. the trekking trails mentioned in the site are very very misleading. there is only one trek trail, which will keep you occupied for about 2 hours on a day. the next day, we requested for another trail, but were informed that the trek was the same as the previous day. There is pretty much nothing else to do in the resort. the view is beautiful, but its hard to even sit and read a book in the balcony because of the insects and the mosquitoes. Since it is a resort in the middle of the jungle, i would'nt complaint much about the insects in the balcony, however even the dim lights in the room make it impossible for you to enjoy reading a book. the lights on top of the bed weren't working, and the main tube light is positioned right outside the bathroom!

it would be wiser to spend a couple more hundreds and stay in vythiri village, at least you would get your money's worth!

We visited the resort in Oct'16 based on the reviews and photos we found online. We were very excited and looked forward to a memorable stay. However, it was a major turn down.
The room they gave us was pathetic and very badly maintained. Everything in the room was an eyesore. Hard bed, no a/c, noisy fan, bad lighting, no clean linen or toiletries, broken ceiling, peeled walls.. the list is long. The food was below average too, we reached at around 3 and their restaurant was already closed. We had room service but it was slow and the sandwiches and pakodas were tasteless. The restaurant has no alacarte, they only have a buffet, that too with a tiny spread. You won't believe ! they don't even have proper serving pots or cutlery. Food was kept in thermos/steel vessels. More like a homestay and not a resort/hotel like they market it as. The non veg (chicken & fish) dishes served tasted good i.e. if you are ok with Kerala style food. There is absolutely nothing for a vegetarian (except some blunt dal and soggy gobi manchurian). There was some work going on in the resort making it noisy most times.

As this resort is in the middle of nowhere, there are no activities. All they have is an ancient and broken carom board and table tennis set.

Not everything is bad about this place. The location is amazing and the view from our balcony was beautiful. Also, there is a hiking trail (only one) which is good. The mornings and evenings were real beautiful with the view of the dam and forest.

Would I go there again, definitely not for the price they charge and the state of their rooms. You could stay at a better resort if you pay a couple of thousands more.

If you don't care about the rooms/food/property and only need some peace and quiet amid the jungle. This might be the place.
