Amazing huge grounds with beautiful gardens . Great pool / beach are with bar . Very large and comfortable rooms in traditional Zanzibari style with good a/c ( although not really needed as rooms stay cool without ) Very good food at restaurant and very reasonably priced ( not many other options nearby ) Breakfast has good variety with small buffet and made to order eggs etc . Hotel has lots of chill out areas to hangout in . Owners very friendly ! Had a really great relaxing time and was sad to go after 3 nights . Location is very secluded but cars are readily available to take you if you want to leave the premises .
I've travelled to many places around the world and Mangrove Lodge is special place that was hard to leave. From tropical gardens to oceans views, this is a place with charm and beauty. The owners and staff are genuinely welcoming and very knowledgable of the history, places to go and even where to stay in other parts of zanzibar. The food is freshly prepared and the breakfast is delicious. I had far too many endless cups of spiced tea and coffee. The is a wonderful chill out area to watch the ocean world go by and even do some yoga.
This beautiful little gem is literally like a slice of paradise. You almost want to keep it as your own special secret but it's too good not to share. A family run place that offers you true experience of Zanzibar and its people and culture. A perfect blend of a restful holiday spot that supports its local community and its natural environment.
If you like small, family owned hotels with plenty of local character and charm then Mangrove Lodge is for you. With five double bungalows set in a very large green garden, the lodge has a communal restaurant and a chill out area with Zanzibari beds. It’s calm and quiet with the sea breezes to keep you cool. Then there is a charming garden by the sea with a big swimming pool and plenty of comfy swing beds and sun loungers. The food was very nice and all prepared fresh, which is important as there is not much nearby this hotel. Usually we took two courses for $15. Portion sizes were generous. They provided soy milk and arranged a Birthday Cake. The owners have taken great care to plant trees, and preserve the mangroves below, and free water is available, so no need for plastic pollution. The hotel sits on a creek so when the tide is high the sea gets a little muddy. This isn’t a hotel for the white sand beaches and blue water as there isn’t any snorkelling, but it is a relaxing and intimate place that will do all they can to help you feel personally welcomed, which is completely lacking in the larger, louder resorts. We took several tours to snorkel and visit a beach to the north. The beach was good for taking long walks and morning runs when the tide was out, and no one hassled us. There is a large, local fish market nearby and a row of smoke houses that one can walk to. It was lovely for children, as it was completely safe and secure and they could run around as they wished and play with the friendly rescue cats and dogs that live in the garden. The staff were very attentive and the rooms were clean and tidy. Bring coffee and a cafetière if you don’t like instant. Very good WiFi. I recommend this hotel for families, especially those with small kids. …
This lodge was recommended to me as being the perfect place to go after the heat and business of Stone Town and they were right. Lovely atmosphere run by a couple who were on site. The rooms might be a bit dated but its got a great location right on the beach and the common areas of the lodge are the perfect places to chill and relax. Nice breakfast.
