You will notice, as I did, the striking change of reviews - universally enthusiastic until this year, when two recent (and extremely critical) reviews caused me to hesitate booking this B&B. it was late so we took the chance and it was fine. The accommodations were both clean and comfortable. The setting is also lovely. The only "criticism" I have is a mild one: the cooked portion of the breakfast - the eggs and toast - were overcooked. The rest of the breakfast was fine and it was served by the delightful longtime owner, Dorothy.
If I had to guess why the reviews have changed so dramatically, I would say it is because Dorothy's adult son has moved in to help his aging parents keep the B&B operating. And, while Dorothy seemed full of warmth, charm and humility, those words would not come to mind when describing Robert (her son). He is an odd combination of insecure and arrogant and I can understand why some guests' experience might be adversely colored by their interaction with him. A "hotelier" he is not!
So, to sum up: I am guessing that the facilities are as appealing as they have ever been but the experience of staying there has suffered somewhat by the change in whom you will be interacting with. Dorothy seems to have moved to a more behind-the-scenes role. To be clear, Robert is not unpleasant, just not the gracious, humble host one usually encounters in B&Bs.

It is interesting that I read these reviews only after having stayed at this property a couple of weeks ago.
We picked up a flyer for this bed and breakfast at the visitor centre and booked it by phone on our way from PEI.
The flyer looked lovely and had glowing reports of the modern furnishings and quality mattresses.
The rooms were fine, a very small communal TV room was available for guests.
The beds were old with uncomfortable mattresses and old bedding and thin pillows.
Breakfast was adequate.
We realized from staying here that the B and B used to be lovely, run by an old couple who had built it and run it as a B and B for 40 years or so. Now they are aging and their son Robert has stepped in to run it. We assume that it will be soon up for sale.
Robert tries hard, but is not cut out to be a B and B host.
The property and view are lovely, but we would not recommend a stay here.

We stayed here 4 nights while my husband was taking a photography class. When we first arrived Robert was not available so we left to explore the area a little. When we returned Robert greeted us and gave us an intro to the property which is quite large and right on the coast of the cove. He upgraded us to an ocean view room since we were staying several nights, introduced us to Bailey, the fetch loving dog, mentioned the availability of a kayak, 8:30 breakfast time, etc. Some irregularities in service: towels removed from room, no water glasses, no shampoo - probably due to Robert's elderly mother who used to run the inn,, getting confused about her tasks. All were corrected on request. Since I was at the inn for the day, Robert was kind enough to offer me a ride into Halifax one day and into Peggy's Cove on another. I declined because I was enjoying the peace and solitude of the inn but very kind of him to offer.
Breakfasts were good though not the very special breakfasts we've experienced at other comparable B&Bs and there were no other choices available other than the served one such as cereals, frits, breads,, etc. There was no coffee or other snacks available at other times of the day. Robert did put bottles of water me in the kitchen frig. There is no hair dryer. Rooms had no keys nor did the main house. Robert said they were not necessary and we were comfortable with this. Window coverings are not darkening. Good lighting in room. Plenty of outlets for devices. Balconies and sitting room available. No phone or TV in room. Robert has recently taken over the management of the inn from his elderly parents and I'd say is on a learning curve. All-in all, though the room was comfortable and the setting love.

We came across this delightful restaurant when we were investigating place to eat in Salcombe and boy am I glad we did our research. A fabulous find - wonderful food and warm welcome from the delightful young owners. We’ll worth the short drive from Salcombe and we’ll return next year.

My Girlfriend and I were on a recent cycling trip in Nova Scotia. When we arrived in Peggy's cove it was recommended to us to stay at Codes Oceanside inn. I called and the man said there was one room available, he quoted the price and I agreed. I asked if he would like a credit card to hold the room and he said it wasn't necessary. Later, we called for directions and they said that there was no availability and that we would have to go elsewhere. There was no availability nearby so I asked if we could pitch a tent on the property and he agreed. When we arrived he was unapologetic and even tried to blame us for waiting until the last minute, when we reminded him that we had a reservation that he gave away. He brushed it off and told us we could pick from several locations to set up the tent, and in the morning we could use a bathroom once the guests had left... "On them". As we had no other options and it was getting late we stayed. He would not even allow my girlfriend to use a washroom that evening. I would recommend to anyone wanting to stay here to insist on leaving their credit card or some other kind of insurance that their room will be held as the host family of this establishment lacks the honour and integrity to hold to an honest verbal arrangement.

At first glance, Code's Ocean Side B&B seems pretty nice. There's a truly lovely view and the property is nicely kept. Immediately upon arrival, however, Robert, the proprietor, demanded we take our shoes off. Not a big deal, but having house rules right off the bat was off putting. He showed us our beds and informed us that a dark green naugahyde on top of our beds was "for our suitcases so that the bedspread is kept clean." We nodded at the additional house rules. He then bragged and name dropped for some time, telling us proudly that Hillary Clinton had stayed there (we later found out, as another Trip Advisor has noted, that she indeed DID NOT stay there but merely visited for two hours). Next, Robert informed us that the other guests staying there "are Muslims" so we would all be eating vegetarian at breakfast. None of us have a problem eating meatless meals--in fact, we all usually do eat meatless meals--but we were astonished that he announced, rudely, the religious practices of his other guests, and furthermore, at every B&B we've ever stayed at (and we've been to many, all over the world), we're given an option for breakfast. Not so with Robert.

Here is a list of problems with this place:

1. The bed was unbelievably uncomfortable. All of us slept poorly, including my sister who had traveled 15 hours and was exhausted. My mom's back ached terribly the next day; it was clear the mattresses hadn't been replaced for a very long time. The visibly stained sheets were not fitted to the bed and smelled. The mattress pad--which we saw a lot of because there was no fitted sheet--was also visibly stained and clearly hadn't been replaced for a while. The towels in my bathroom smelled; my parents said theirs were all right. Overall, the linens felt unclean and dank, like they had been sitting in a closet for some time or hadn't been washed for a while. I didn't even wipe my face on the towel; I used a Kleenex instead.

2. The bathroom shower sang if you used hot water--a piercing call the entire time--there's definitely something awry with the plumbing. On our last morning, the shower stopped entirely, and there was no water at all for several minutes. My mom apparently was in the middle of bathing, covered in soap, when the water shut off completely, and my sister had a similar experience.

3. This is somewhat minor, but Robert also didn't provide adequate shampoo or a hair dryer, and the soap was miniature and not enough for two people over two nights. If it's a youth hostel, fine, but if it's a B&B that boasts cleanliness and hospitality for over $100 CAD per room per night, you expect a hair dryer, soap, and clean, unstained sheets.

4. The breakfast on the first day as nice, but the second was the real kicker. Robert had invited over a lady friend who, to her credit, was very nice, but inexplicably, he had her eating breakfast with us while he served (Robert was very insistent on seating arrangements at breakfast). It was clear she wasn't a guest because we saw them walking hand in hand up the driveway. Awkward doesn't even begin to describe it. When my mom asked Robert if he had any tea, Robert's girlfriend leapt up and then rejoined us at the table. "This is good Robert!" she said, munching happily on her breakfast. We felt like we were intruding on his personal space.

5. The WORST part of this entire experience, however, was the payment process. We booked the B&B through Booking.com and were quoted a price. Robert quoted a different price the day after we arrived and was extremely unclear about methods of payment--he told us that it was $580 CAD by cash and $620 CAD by credit card. Our Booking.com price said much less, however, and when my mom showed Robert, he agreed to the Booking.com price. We paid him in cash which is what he requested. We left in good spirits, albeit uncomfortable from the horrible beds and dirty sheets. Later, when we were heading to our next destination, Robert texted us angrily that we didn't pay him enough, telling us in a text message riddled with typos to "enjoy the balance of your vacation" and that he had "learned a lesson." He had TWO NIGHTS to figure out any billing issues or concerns, and we were PERFECTLY WILLING to pay the price he arranged. Nevertheless, he harassed us at our next hotel, faxing the owner our personal information and demanding extra money from us. Again, WE HAD NO PROBLEM PAYING HIM WHAT WAS OWED. We ended up sending him more money via a money order at the post office in Canada, and we hoped never to be contacted by him again.

In the middle of the night, about ten days after our accommodation, Robert harassed my mom again via text message, despite the fact that we took time out of our vacation to pay him the rest of the money he demanded from us. He also said offensive words about our nationality and smeared our character. Nevermind the unsatisfactory accommodation, it is Robert's job to be clear about the price of the room from the beginning, rather than being unclear and accusing us of cheating him out of money. He should not be hosting guests period, and I advise all who read this to STAY AWAY.

We called this Inn, (Codes Oceanside Inn), when we arrived in NS because it was the only Inn that had space at "the last minute." It advertised that it had internet, cable, TV, and a row boat available for guests' use.

The owner answered and said "We have only had one rooms available on the front without a water view -- and our best accommodation -- our large suite on the ocean side with a beautiful view and a deck overlooking the ocean." I said "We'll take the Suite."

I asked if it was a nice Inn, and he said, "Well Hillary Clinton stayed here when she was the 'First Lady' -- does that answer that question?"

I offered my credit card, and he said, "That's not necessary -- we can take care of that when you arrive." I said, "Well we won't be arriving a couple of hours, and I just want to make sure the Suite doesn't get rented to someone else before we get there." He said, "Don't worry -- your Suite will be here when you arrive."

The ride took longer than expected and We got hungry, so when we had to stop for dinner. I therefore called again and told him that, and he again said "Don't worry, your room will be held."

A couple of hours later we arrived. I took out my credit card, and he said, "It's late -- we'll take care of that in the morning."

When we arrived, I again tried to give him my charge card, and he again said, "Don't worry, we will take care of that when you get here."

We unloaded our bags, etc., and helped take them up to the 2nd floor "large Suite."

On the way up, he showed us "the TV room."

He spent many minutes attempting to get the TV to work, but couldn't get it to work.

Our "Suite" turned out to be a boiling pot, smallish, single room, without AC, with 2 small window nest to each other -- NO door to the NON-existent deck -- no cross-ventilation, and a tiny bathroom. It felt like an oven set on the highest temperature.

The Owner pointed at the two small pillows at the top of the bed and said, "You can't use those pillows -- they are for decorative purposes only, " and he left.

We were exhausted, so we decided we wanted to go right to bed, We pulled back the bedspread and upper sheet, and saw two sheets that looked and felt like they had not been washed for some time.

We started to laugh at the absurdity of the situation and talked about just leaving right then and there. It was now very late -- we had not made another reservation -- and we were now totally exhausted -- so we decided to "just make the best of it."

We had brought our own goose down pillows with us, so I volunteered to make a late trip to the car to get them. On my way up the dimly-lit stairs, there was suddenly -- on the platform above me -- a woman in a shocking pink or red satin nightgown, who I assumed must be the owner's wife. She said she was going to the TV room to watch some TV, and asked if I wanted to join her to watch some 1AM Movies. After saying I was too tired, I went to my room with the pillows.

When I told my sweetheart the latest hallway adventure, she was even more freaked out by the whole situation, the absurdity that the only pillows in the room "couldn't be used," his unwillingness to make a credit card record of our checking in, and the general weirdness of the owner. She said she didn't feel safe there. I calmed her down by double locking the bedroom door and jamming a chair under the door handle.
I also sent a text message to my adult daughter to tell her the name and address of the Inn, the weirdness of the owner and the situation, and asked her to call and talk with me in the morning, (in case my sweethearts fears were justified -- which thankfully they were not).

When we went to take a shower the next morning there was neither hot water (only luke-warm) or water pressure -- the water just trickled out of the shower faucet.

After forgoing showers, we went down to a small, mediocre, breakfast. I asked about the rowboat that was available for Guests to use, and the Owner said, "We don't have a rowboat." When I almost spilled couple of drops on the setting mat, I thought the owner was going to have a heart attack.

The woman in the red nightgown turned out to be the only other guest there the previous night. She asked excitedly, did Hillary Clinton really stay in in 1998?

I leaned over to my sweetheart who was next to me and whispered in her ear, "I guarantee you Hillary NEVER STAYED HERE !!"

The Owner said, "She had guaranteed reservations to stay here, she stopped by, met his parents" [who ran the Inn at that time], "had tea and biscuits, and left."

After breakfast I went to pay for "our Suite," and gave the owner my credit card.

He said, "Oh, we don't take credit cards -- we only take cash."

I said, "What do you mean you don't take credit card -- I offered to pay by credit card several times yesterday, and you never told me you did not take credit cards -- you just said, 'We'll take care of that later'."

He said, "Sorry, cash only."

I gave him 2 US $100 bills for my $140 Inn bill. He gave me back $60 Dollars.

I did not realize he never gave me the proper change because $200 US Dollars was equal to $272 Canadian Dollars and my change should have been almost $100 US, so he cheated me out of almost $40 Dollars.

I STRONGLY DO NOT RECOMMEND the Code Oceanside Inn.

I STRONGLY RECOMMEND AGAINST STAYING in the Code Oceanside Inn.

We greatly enjoyed our stay at the Oceanside B&B with hosts Dorothy and Kaitlyn. Each day our room was spotlessly cleaned with fresh towels and linens and our beds tucked in perfectly providing us the best sound sleep! Waking up to the 8:30am formal breakfast was equally unique and enjoyable as we were spoiled with incredible coffee, jams, and a two-course meal (stuffed french toast beyond my favorite!)

While the row-boat is in need of TLC, we enjoyed a little ride in the bay. We especially enjoyed romantic evenings with wine down at the dock watching shooting stars.

Stumbled upon this terrific B and B. Price was very reasonable for such a fantastic place. House is tucked off a cove with great views of the water and only 4 miles away from Peggy's Cove. Robert took us on a bike ride to Peggy's Cove while his mother made an amazing breakfast which was served on a fresh pressed linen table cloth with fresh flowers overlooking the cove. Both owners were filled of local history and were very helpful. DEFINITELY DO NOT PASS THIS B & B BY!
