Tasting menu on offer, which was 9 courses
From the minute we walked in we were made to feel very comfortable and welcome.
Sometimes, restaurants of this standard can feel stuffy and formal. Macneen is not that.
While staff are extremely professional and obviously well trained. They are very attentive to all their guests without being overly so.
Neven was working that night. He was a fantastic host. He spends a lot of time in the dining room with his guests and chatted to everyone individually. He is clearly very passionate about what he's doing there and that comes across. He even gave me a signed copy of his book as a gift which was an extremely kind touch.
The food is absolutely next level. Presentation and quality is of the highest standard and everything tasted delicious. Everything they put on the plate matters. Nothing is there for show.
Due to the cost Macneen house is not for every Friday night and nor is it designed to be but it is for those special occasions and they do make your occasion feel special.
Finally I had chocolate tart for dessert. For a chocolate addict, It was the best desert I've ever had.
Overall a fantastic experience and while costly it is worth it for those special times and it will create a lasting memory for whomever you choose to spend it with.

We had the wine paring with the tasting menu which was outstanding.

I have only stayed in the townhouse and love it as plenty of room for up to 5 people.
The cocktails are very good quality, the wine list is extensive and has some very affordable wines on there.
The food is amazing, and 4 of us have very different tastes (ie some veggie, some not).
Portions size generous for a tasting menu.
The breakfast is top notch too.
What makes it even more excellent is the service, everyone is so friendly and professional, but still a relaxed atmosphere.
We had the Tasting Menu and the balance of the menu, portions, wait in between courses was spot on. The quality of the food and the presentation was wonderful. To be honest, I didnt expect such quality. I have eaten in Le Gavroche in London and the quality in MacNean was so reminiscent of Michel Roux Jr. Fabulous.
However, the icing on the cake was the man himself Nevin. He came out to us, chatted away posed for photos . He came across as a genuinely " nice guy" passionate about cooking, his staff seemed a tight unit. It was a truly pleasant experience well worth the money. Keep it up MacNean House. Well done.
We had the tasting menu and went for the wine pairings. The food was delicious start to finish. The pace of the plates was a little quick but I asked them to slow it a little which they did no problem. The dining room is well laid out, well lit (even with Christmas lights) and has a nice ambience. The staff were professional, attentive, friendly and warm. I liked the fact that the restaurant does a single sitting per evening.
Breakfast is served at the same table we had for dinner and is of an excellent standard. Served a la carte, we had excellent porridge, prunes and apricots with some delicious yogurt. We all opted for the fry which was well presented and tasty. Delicious sausages, bacon and pudding. A special mention for Imelda who was maitre d’ for breakfast. Attentive, friendly and helpful. Nothing was too much trouble for her and the team.
Unfortunately, the weather was wet and visibility poor so we did not experience the full beauty of the area. An excuse to return some time in the near future😉
3.5hr drive from Kilkenny was the only downside, but all that was forgotten when we checked in, rooms are well appointed and quite spacious, outdoor patio area is new and very relaxing.
The dinner was outstanding and our waitress Georgia was fantastic from start to finish, so well trained and attentive. Credit to Restaurant Manager and Sommelier Blaithin, who have the staff trained to an exceptional level. You genuinely feel they love coming to work. She also has an encyclopedic knowledge of wine and I quite enjoyed chatting to her about my own wine journey. We decided to do the wine pairing option also on the night, which I must say is well worth the extra cost. You'll be a little tipsy going back to your room though!
I love my food, but I have to say a stunning, well presented 3 course breakfast awaited us the next morning, had me defeated! (Although the wine might of had something to do with that!). Overall, the food experience was faultless!
From a covid point of view, everything was very safe, and at no point felt uncomfortable. You actually keep your same table for dinner and breakfast the next morning also and with indoor dining on hold at the moment to non residents, only about 40 covers are cateree for each night.
We we're lucky enough to meet Nevin after dinner, he is an absolute gentleman, and I must say, he genuinely tries to get around to everyone who is dining. We were delighted to see him given it was fathers day and he had his own family to celebrate with.
Himself and his wife Amelda run a premium establishment here, with pure customer focus at the forefront of everything they do. No question, we will be back.
For those that are foodies , this place is not to be missed!
