The breakfast was great but it took a long time to arrive as there was only one staff member tending to everyone in the morning. There is a restaurant right beside the Hostel which has more variety in drinks, food and service. The staff had limited english which was a great opportunity to learn more Spanish and use my google translator. A 20 minute walk to the nearest gas station and the bus stops right in front of the Hostel. The decor, jumping platforms and water toys were the best! Brought all the guests together to the dock to enjoy their stay. One thing I would improve is the lack of information about the tours and shuttle busses. The Hostel has the cost of the shuttle busses posted and the staff will call for you if you want them. It would be beneficial if they described the busses as well as they are available. Upon arriving I spoke with the owner and he said he can organize the tours for us. Unfortunately he never came by during our stay so it was difficult to organize the tours as there was no description on cost, duration and difficulty. I found that Santa Ana was much more difficult than I anticipated and very cold at the top. Had I known I would have prepared better to better enjoy myself. For the tour of Tazumel Ruins we thought visiting Casa Blanca would be a 5 minutes endeavour, meanwhile what I think they meant was that the tour is 5 minutes away. It was about 2-3 HOURS! So needless to say we did not prepare for that and had to miss out. I suggest to the owner to have some sort of description in english about each tour on the bulletin, not just shuttle information. It would be very helpful!…
This hostel is such a pearl. It is perfectly located right in front of the lake. The stuff is just amazing (especially Eduardo) and the rooms are clean and beautiful. Would definitely recommend staying here.
It’s a place where you can relax all day long in the common area which is on the water. So you can chill out, drinking beer and swim or jump from the sundeck. The downside is that it’s quite far from everything and the transportation in the are is not frequent.
Good spot with backpacking atmosphere! The stuff is friendly. Common area is cosy (with hammocks!) and you can enjoy the view of the Lake. Bathrooms are quite new and clean (only the pressure of water sucks) We came for two days and did a trip to Santa Ana Volcano. You can use public transport - it is fairly easy *to take 249 to EL Congo and than scond bus to Puento Verde.
We were the first family to stay at Captain Morgan Hostel since it opened in March 2018. We had an amazing stay and highly recommended a few days at this hostel on the lake to ALL travellers. The setting is amazing. The hostel sits on the shores of Lake Coatepeque. The main common area and a couple of the rooms are actually built on stilts over the water of the lake. We stayed in one of the rooms over the water. The room was newly constructed with nice materials and tastefully decorated. The beds were really comfortable and I slept really well. As a side note. The hostel has one shared bathroom for everyone and it’s a short walk up the hill from the water. The bathroom is also nicely finished. The common area / restaurant is great. There’s a large space with ample tables, sofa seating, and hammocks. There’s also a couple lounge chairs on the 2nd level. A really cool thing about the common area is that you get a great view out over the lake AND you can jump into the water from either the ~2.5m or ~5m platforms, which we did A LOT! The water was really clear and warm, making it perfect for swimming. The BEST part about our stay was the friendly owner and his great staff. I don’t have enough good to say about them. They went out of their way to make every aspect of our stay perfect. The owner even drove us into Santa Ana himself the day we left the hostel. This is a great hostel, it’s definitely worth a few days of your trip to El Salvador. A few other notes: - the wifi is limited and not super fast. They have a wireless Claro hotspot that works on 3G cellular signal. You can check email, etc but they ask that you keep video streaming and downloading to a minimum. -the bugs can be bad in the evening. The hostel takes many steps to keep the mosquitoes down, but bring and use insect repellent. -to get there take chicken bus 242 from Santa Ana or El Congo and get off where google maps says the hostel is. …
