Nestled in a picturesque setting, the Hotel Marea Del Portillo offers a range of room options with many guests enjoying the renovated spaces and beach vistas, though some have raised concerns about room upkeep. The natural beauty of the location is a highlight, with clean beaches and pools adding to the allure. Staff members at the hotel are often commended for their attentive service, but visitors should be prepared for the occasional loud Cuban music. While opinions on the hotel's value and food offerings are mixed, its location is a gateway to the scenic coastal road to Santiago de Cuba.

I would like to discuss the bus ride between the Manzanillo Cuba airport to the Hotel Marea Del Portillo Resort. My wife and I have visited this resort many times and have enjoyed it most times. The resort is generally quite, friendly and clean and we both love the 🌞 . The food is not the greatest how ever you get what you pay for. However one big detriment to the Hotel is the bus ride. The ride from the airport to the resort is approximately two hours each way and although the bus drivers are referred to by the Hotel staff as Professional, most are certainly not. We have had rides that have scared the Hell out of both of us due to the drivers reckless unnecessary speed or crowding other traffic or in particular driving much to close to the road mountain edge. There are no guard rails nor any protection when you are either climbing or descending down the mountain and when you look over the road edge you cannot even see the bottom. Most drivers do not take the risk factors into consideration when they are going down the mountain and we know that we are completely dependent on working breaks and break lines to get us down safely but most drivers travel way too fast going down and then on the way up they speed to get the momentum to climb and now they are on the road edge in the event that meet another vehicle. One time we were returning to the airport and our driver decided to pass another sister bus which had also just left our resort. Our driver was litterly racing the bus ahead of us and traveling at the top speed the bus would go only to narrowly crawl last the sister bus just to be ahead of it by one bus length. Are you joking? Other oncoming traffic obviously slowed to allow our bus to get in. OMG. And why do the buses departing the airport and the resort, have to leave at the same exact time is ridiculous. All that does is cause the arriving tourists at either end to bunch up like a herd of cattle waiting to go on. Crazy. Other tourists we have met at the resort have told us that they would never return to this place simply because of the drivers. So sad. Also, drivers should not consume alcohol prior to operating the bus. We enjoy the scenery each way however are very nervous with the ride especially in light of the recent bus crash in Cuba in January 2021 where 10 lives were lost I believe all of their drivers need to take an updated driving course and any driver consuming alcohol prior to operating the bus should be immediately fired.

I will try to keep this short.
Before booking your trip, DO YOUR RESEARCH!
This is an older resort that was closed for 4 years and only reopened on december 6 2023.
Be kind and show patience with the workers and they will do all they can to meet your needs and requests. If you have high expectations, book elsewhere.
Bring your own drink containers to reduce waste. Bring some snacks in case you are not satisfied with the food. Bring your own meds as medication and first aid supplies are very limited in cuba, and leave them at the pharmacy on your departure or with workers. Vicks is very appreciated as they cannot get that in cuba. Bring coffee if that's something you cannot live without.
Expect interruptions in wifi, pretend you are camping off grid.
The only thing that should go down their toilets is human fecal matter. Please use the waste baskets for your paper and feminine hygiene products.
Gifts of 20lbs fishing line, lures, work gloves, educatiin supplies for children, running shoes of all sizes, candies, clothes and anything else you can think of go a very long way in helping the people.
The cubans love the happy, thoughtful, and caring Canadians. What goes around comes around.
Huge shout out to the entertainmet manager Anas for organizing an amazing new years eve party with an aquatics show i will never forget!
Mucho amora to all the lovely people we met and partied with.

I thought that I stayed at the Club Amigo Hotel in Marea Del Portillo but it might have also been called the Hotel Farallon. There are 2 hotels in that bay that might be affiliated and I was sent to the one further in and up the hill a bit. I cycled there from Chivirico so can't comment on how long it takes to get there as others have complained about it but I can imagine that it's a long ride on bad roads. I thought that it was a nice, clean hotel with decent food. Breakfast was particularly good so not sure why others had issues with it. I only stayed one night and likely would never go back there simply because the beach was awful. It was dark sand and the water was murky. The entry was muddy and weedy. The opposite of perfect beaches like Varadero and Cayo Santa Maria - both of which are much easier bus or taxi rides. Yes, the view of the bay and mountains is lovely and the pool seemed clean and quiet so some might possibly go just for that but otherwise for similar prices ($1000 p.p.) I would much rather go to Cayo Santa Maria or Cayo Coco.

I have no idea how this place is still running???? I went with a friend and it was the worst experience I’ve ever had with an all inclusive.. food was horrible and all of the local people were able to be in the resort which lead to very uncomfortable situations, they would stare or talk dirty it was just horrific... I would never go back even if someone were to PAY me.. please spend the extra few hundred dollars and go elsewhere in Cuba.

I’ve been to Cuba over 60 times in the last 30 years. I’ve seen every area of Cuban resorts. The scenery here is still some of the best that Cuba has to offer. The hotel, unfortunately is not the same. Although most amenities worked, the food and beverage choices were disgusting at best. Beer and water were always available. After that you were pretty much done. Never any wine and no real fruit juice. The food was terrible. They said they had chicken but no one knew what part of the chicken was served and there was little to no meat on the bones.
I respectfully suggest that if you enjoy a refreshing beverage ( other than beer or water) and you enjoy a good meal, you avoid staying here. If you’re looking to lose weight and want to enjoy the sun and scenery then this place is for you.
The service does improve ever so slightly on weekends when the Cuban people arrive to take over the resort.

We visited Manzanillo de Cuba region, stayed in this beautifully surrounded by nature and culture Hotel “Farallon/Club Amigo Marea del Portillo”… wonderful experience! We find the hotel stuffs are very friendly, helpful; like Yamirka who's working in the hotel office, hotel public relations department, she speaks excellent in English, tirelessly helping guests all the time!
Places of this hotel are very clean & comfortable. With great relaxed atmosphere around, a dream for vacationers. Items of good foods carefully prepared by hotel cooks are healthy and satisfying.
This hotel is also a great location to start along the spectacular coastal road trip to the historic Santiago de Cuba. A must to experience!
All in all, enjoyed Marea del Portillo/Farallon Hotel while visiting/exploring the Manzanillo area! We will be back again. 🙏

The Views, the Friendlist staff and cleanest rooms. This resort is finally reopening after Covid. No other location in Cuba compares for beauty, safety and friendliness. The Farallon section is my favourite on the hill for the stunning views. This resort needs to be rebranded for folks enjoying unparalleled biking and hiking adventure as well as photography. You literally have the Caribbean coast at your fingertips for biking. The food was better than Playa Pesquero and Grand Memories Holguin. There are some shortages (butter), sometimes coffee (we bring our own. My big pet peeve is getting from the airport in Manzanillo to hotel with the bikes. I was quoted 300. CDN for cab because Sunwings Bus company refuses bikes on the bus that clearly had ample room. Ridiculous. A hotel staff arranged for 120.00 CDN but this is high considering Sunwing charges for bikes on plane and bus was very empty. Not right! I’ve done this routine for 7 yrs and Sunwing needs to get onboard with a fairer system in order to attract the customers that will ADORE this beautiful Region as it deserves!

This was my first time back in three years and was pleasantly surprised by all the great improvements to the Marea and the Farallon the old girls are looking pretty. Improvements to the pools and the updates to the rooms are great. Nice to have more bars and places to eat at the facilities. The best thing about the resort is the staff both new and old staff are the best in Cuba. It was great to see many familiar friendly faces. I knew going down there would be shortages but we always has good food to eat everybody remember you are getting more than the local people so keep it real. People complaining about the bus ride really just look at the beautiful Granma countryside and have a cold cerveza on the ride. People if you want a relaxing holiday where you can bring your family and not have to walk miles to every facility this resort complex offers a great value holiday, plus the great staff. Help the the locals try the resort there is a reason this place has a high repeater list ask a Marea enjoyer

This will be cross posted. We have returned from yet another wonderful week at Marea. The food was the same and plentiful. The staff were awesome as usual. The bugs were only bad for an hour or so however the sand flees were awful late at night walking between resorts. The president is apparently coming to this part of the island early March to see what is happening as there are so many complaints about the condition of the roads. There is apparently money being put in to renovations at both hotels starting with Farallón. Customs was okay no real issues just slow. There were drinks available at the airport arrival and departure. Plane came from Montreal to Toronto and then Manzanillo. Gas is short however we had no difficulty arranging taxis if you plan ahead. They are not sitting and waiting for a possible trip. We went to Ferlin’s and food was amazing. Did not have the opportunity to get to Danny’s this time, however as per other guests food was great there too. Cuban people are finding times tougher and even if they have some means there is very little in the store. They are in need of personal items as previously stated. Shampoo, deodorant, toothpaste etc. Both hotel stores had some personal items that could be bought such as roll on deodorant. Vendors are down by the guard shack and all in nice little huts. Many horse and buggies available. Ice and beer every day at resort. Entertainment similar but new band at Marea. Excellent music. New Mariachi band from Media Luna for Cuban night and they received a standing ovation. There are many dancers both male and female. Some people have left for other countries to try and make a better life. Some have already returned unable to find work. There will always be someone unhappy with the resort or something that has happened. The only real issue we witnessed were a few unruly and disrespectful Canadians. The people in Cuba are doing the best they can with what they have. Enjoy your next trip, go with the flow and remain positive.

This place in Cuba is my favourite. The unique location provides beach and mountain view that is incomparable. There is the ability to explore the rural area and town around to truly experience Cuba. They have recently done a lot of renovations and upgrades to the hotel itself that bring life back into the property. Basic rooms are directly on the beach or upgrade to Farallon (superior room) to get the amazing views from your room. The staff are amazing and will assist you with anything you need. You have to experience it for yourself.

We were thereto first week it re-opened and everything was really good, no shortages of anything, lots of beer and rum, not sure about lemonade, we purchased bottled water at the store! Friends of ours stayed right until the end of January and from the emails we received things quickly deteriorated, coffee, milk, cola and eggs became scarce! If you are on FB Friends of Maria del Portillo group will give you a more current picture of what is up, the bus ride btw was quite scenic! It is a shame about the shortages because this is one of my favourite resorts in Cuba with the mountains in full view from the lovely beach! I hope this helps, if you need more information I can ask my friends who just returned! carl

If you book an all inclusive package the tour operator (Sunwing) will have a bus waiting, it is a 2 hour ride and quite scenic in daylight hours, hopefully that answers your question! If you have further questions about the resort feel free to ask as we have been there several times! Salut! carl
