This place offers a wide range of accommodations, ranging from tent cubes to luxury tree huts, all with an excellent view over the Lago General Carrera to the dramatic mountains and glaciers of the Northern Ice Field.Due to the location and the broad range of rooms and prices, the place is immensely popular so make sure to book in advance. The restaurant, where you both take the included breakfast, and can enjoy a set menu evenings, is beautifully located directly on the lake but the food and service struggles to match the quality of location. We stayed in a comfortable cottage high above the lake with own jaccuzzi and a stunning view from the terrace. We also joined from Terra Luna's own little harbour a full day-tour in jet boat up the Leones river to the lake and glacier of the same name - an unforgettable trip. Terra Luna is dramatically situated on relatively steep slopes towards the lake so a four-wheel drive may come in handy on the gravel roads. Staff is helpful but due to the success of the place seems to be permanently overworked which gives occasional waiting time.

This place was quite funky, in a good way. Huge variety of room types, mostly in standalone cabins, we stayed in one of 6 domes they have. Dome was cozy with wood stove despite cold weather, and dry despite some rain. ALL the staff were very helpful and many spoke some English. Meals were excellent, we had booked 2 nights but liked everything so much we stayed a 3rd night. If you want cookie cutter Westin, don't come here, but if you want something different with nice warm hearted touches, don't miss it. Many other the other guests we met were very interesting too. PLUS, the owner has a helicopter and will do tours, pretty cool. The Lake/Mountain vistas from the rooms and dining area were fantastic.

I feel compelled to write after leaving earlier today. I booked here to fulfill a dream of seeing the Marble Caves but there is so much MORE on offer! The surroundings are beautiful and I will miss lighting the wood fire in my cabin every day. Speaking of which, there is huge variation in accomodation, the whole complex felt like Alice in wonderland with dome tents, conventional cabins and even a pirate ship not to mention activities like the spa, football pitch, sauna, giant chess set....

If you like outdoor activities, check out the vast array of things to do from trekking to fossils to lake adventures walking on glaciers. The food is fantastic - and so much of it. I couldn't eat three meals a day, there was so much and it was delicious.

Luca, a guide, is extremely passionate and can tell you all about the fauna (especially mushrooms!). I found the staff really caring - they seemed genuinely concerned I wasn't eating everything/doing every activity. Consuella (lovely smile) and Andrea checked in on me a few times which I appreciated, I think my English face looking naturally miserable was a worry for them :) and when I missed one of my planned activities (I was tired from lots of travel!) the owner offered to take me on a quick flight by helicopter!

I enjoyed my time here, I overbooked myself in terms of days as I was so focused on the marble caves but this is an outdoor enthusiasts dream. Book direct rather than through an agent is my advice but there's no way you can be disappointed by it.

We ended up here by accident after a long drive. Such a wonderful, welcoming place. Our room was very comfortable, right on the lake. The restaurant was great. Staff were friendly and helpful. And the views! Spectacular lake with snow capped mountains in the distance. There were many more activities on site that we didn't have time to experience. Would highly recommend!

We have stayed in the Tera Luna for 2 nights. The place looks from a natural geographic film, diner there were expensive but excellent, the the service and the people were terrible. From the first second people put pressure on you to take their excursion, the owner even did not stop pressuring us when the dinner arrived and got cold, most of the people there were grumpy, very unhelpful and basically did not give us any accurate information about the basic things such as transport (unless we take a shuttle from them) or restaurant (because we suppose to eat there).
Beside this, due to budget reasons, we took the smallest cabana which was overpriced (over 70 Euro!) and very simple and rather uncomfortable.
It was the only place in Patagonia that we got such a treatment.
So, to cut short story short, if you have no intention to take their excursions (which are over 100 Euro per person!), Beside this, usage of the sauna and the hot tab are for extra costs. I would go over there to have diner to enjoy the view, but I would not stay over night there. It is all about people.

Response from terraluna, Propietario at Terra Luna
Responded Mar 7, 2012
Thank you for your opinion about my lodge and myself. But I suppose it would have been more helpfull to talk face to face about your problem instead of using internet. , as we could react and correct eventual mistakes to make your holidays more pleasurable. This has always been our aim. But now that we have no more options to help you, let's go to the facts and these are my comments. You say the place is gorgeous, the food is excellent but after reading all your comment I could resume it by simples words: "money matter". Ypu fpound everything expensive and "expensive" is a very relative concept... Dinner: An "excellent" (your words) dinner including soup, salad, main course, desert and herb tea four US$ 20 in a Hotel restaurant, on a lake shore, and facing the region's highest peak in Patagonia is probably the less expensive you can ever find!!!!! Please check in PN los Glaciares (Argentina), in Torres del Paine for "same locations" hotels. Cabin: As you said you choosed the less expensive one for budget reasons. There are only 2 cabins like this which means only 4 persons in a total hotel capacity of 54 Pers. So why would you recomand to everybody not to go to Terra Luna when all the rest of the people can choose a very nice and confortable cabin like the jacuzzi , tree house, appartments, etc..???? All these acomodations for a maximum price of US130 /night for a couple which is also cheap comparing to common Patagonian prices in such kind of locations. You choosed the cabin normaly choosed by walk-in passengers, backpackers, group guides, group drivers, cyclists. Most of them like it by the way, but the lodge can not be qualified and generalized according to its lowest category room, This offer (camp hut) is an exception in the whole infraestructure. We offer this option in order to permit to low budget travellers to enjoy the place and the outsanding site and view at an affordable price. Good intentions, but I can see the risk now. SPA: Once again to critisise the lodge because the SPA (sauna massage hot tub) is an extra cost is almost unacceptable!!!!! This is the case in the big majority of hotels all around the would. How can you pretend us to includ it in a night room at US$ 70 for 2 person???? It is included in our "all inclusive program". The people: If the 14 people working here are "terrible" , many of them working here for years and with thousands of "thanks" written in our gold book (did you read it in the restaurant?), I think the problem is somewhere else... Remember that human relation have always 2 sides and maybe if you would have tried to have a deeper or a more "honest" or "direct" contact (about your opinion for example) probably the result would have been different. As all of them are always doing their best to solve any passenger problem. Remember they like "tips" in South America... But sometimes misunderstandings occur...between people. So I definitively think this is a shared or a simple "skin" problem. Information /Excursion On that point it is even more sad to read your comment as we consider that informing from the beginning and recomand about the best excursion our passengers can do here around is giving them tools to have good holidays. Specially if for years hundreds of passengers who did it thank us afterwards for the recomendation as that was "the experience of their life". Besides, this particular excursion you refer to, is not the "hotel" one as peole from all the hotels around the lake sell it. It is part of "the glacier connection" pool, which gathers 3 companies (3 owners) going the 3 most important glaciers around. It has its own web site, an external office in Pto Tranquilo, etc... and the prices are much lower than ANY other option to see places like laguna San Rafael for example a offer a much interesting experience that traditional offer (US$ 190 against US$ 340) . So problem is much simple: if you do not want such information or do not have the budget to do something, if someone has been "bad" with you, just inform the administration directly and that's all. If I am correct, you came to our place without car, with a local bus, which is absolutely OK to us, but rare and it does not make it simple for self guided excursions or to organise something around... And this is probably the difficulties the staff had to give you solutions. With no transportation here you have not too much options than use our kayaks or take a boat excursion as we recomand. Well, toolate now. So I am sorry we could not fill your particular expectatives and sincerely apologies for this. But you don't any favor to other travellers when you recomand everyone not to come to Terra Luna as they can enjoy many many things if they have the budget (lodging in a normal or superior rooms, renting canoes, using the SPA, going to the jet excursions, etc...). In other words, your experience is more "personal" , "human" and due to a particular situation, than an objective evaluation of the hotel facilities you probably did not use. I can perfectly understand and respect your opinion, and situation but I feel sad to know all by this internet and do not have the possibility to understand your parameters and needs, and have the possiibility to change things to make you happy with your stay. Because this is our aim, to be able to recieve different kind of persons and budget and they can enjoy it. We also recceive student classes every year and meny hotels refuse them. When a problem occurs and we can know it on time we are always glad to change things "in situ". Once again, thank you for your feedback and hopefully you can come back one day with a higher budget so you can enjoy many of our numerous facilitiies and recomanded activities and give us the opportunity to read a better opinion of our hotel.

We booked a lakeside cottage at Terra Luna to cap our three week vacation in Chile, and it was the perfect place to relax and unwind after all our Patagonian adventures. The drive from Balmaceda took five hours, but Patricio of Terra Luna took care of us--excellent driving , with all the stops for photos of spectacular scenery along the Carretera Austral. Beautiful mountain vistas in autumn!
Terra Luna, with its tag line, "a unique place....for unique people," is a great place to take the family. It offers many activities such as boat excursions, glacier hikes and river rafting, plus in-house activities like biking, canopy games, outdoor & indoor games, including a slide in the activity loft of the main house. We wanted to slow down so we basically just chilled and enjoyed the breathtaking scenery. All the cottages have a beautiful view of the lake, Lago General Carrera, and Chilean Patagonia's highest peak, Monte San Valentin---......amazing!! Our daughters enjoyed the nice playground with its giant chess set, as well as playing with the two dogs that roamed the premises. Our stay was during the shoulder season so we had most of the place to ourselves. Though it was chilly, we were blessed with clear skies and calm waters, so we took the jet boat out to the Marble Caves. We also tried the "super canopy," an obstacle course in a circuit of zip lines. It was fun, but it's not for the faint-hearted! The hot-tub is a must-try! It's by the lake with a great view of the mountains.
Our Family House was a cozy little cottage with two bedrooms and two bathrooms, kitchen, indoor and outdoor dining area and a wood-fired heater, supplied with towels, bed linens, soap, water heater, with daily cleaning service. Filtered drinking water is provided. Intercom telephone available. (There was a fully-equipped, separate small bedroom unit at the back of this house, but it was not open) The upstairs had a small lounge with a study table and sofa bed; the bedroom had two double-decker beds. The bedroom downstairs had a queen-size bed with picture windows with a view of the lake and garden. At first we were concerned that heating would be inadequate with just one fireplace, but the heat radiates up thru the tiny stairwell and the iron chimney that goes thru the second floor. We loved this cottage. It was a bit of a walk to the Main house though, but we didn't mind.
The main house is a bed-and-breakfast with about 4 rooms facing the lake. All meals were served here, and you also have a view of the lake and mountains the dining hall. It's post-card pretty! Meals were not cheap, but were of very good standard, something unexpected in a remote area. Breakfast was bread, ham cheese, fruit, yogurt, cereals, instant coffee (nespresso was extra). Lunch and dinner were always 3-course with soup, entree and salad, dessert. You could order wine or beer (extra). We opted for the full-board option after we realized there aren't any dining choices around. It's a half hour drive to the village, which didn't seem to have many food places, though there were some grocery stores if you opt to cook your own meals, that is if your cottage is equipped with a kitchen.
Philippe Reuter is hands-on with managing the property. He took care of us when we tried the super canopy, along with Patricio. We could not have survived that circuit without them! Philippe and his team made sure we had everything else we wanted during our stay. I've read many reviews about Terra Luna and Philippe, and I find it sad that some have taken occasional hitches quite negatively. I guess you just have to have the right frame of mind with realistic expectations and make allowances for cultural differences when you travel. After all, this is Patagonia where things can be rather unpredictable and rough around the edges. For all his direct and flamboyant manner, Philippe is a reasonable guy to talk to and is eager to please customers. Just talk to him and ask for what you need.
All in all, we are happy to have come across Terra Luna. Thank you, Philippe, and Patricio. It was a pleasure!

Dear , I was pleasantly surprise by your complete, objetive and positive comment about TERRA LUNA and myself. I am happy you did enjoy your stay and perfectly remind your very nice family. I normally do not answer to positive opinion cause I often agree them, but your is so special cause it gets to the point , and you perfectly understand travel philosophy and give a lesson that all passenger should learn. Yes I am "direct" and"a reasonable guy to talk to and eager to please customers" and the key is: "Just talk and ask for what you need" instead of despice or critisise when its too late, and just for the pleasure to do damage. Talk is the way to get a better stay, have a better knowledge of the persons behind the faces, to share and experience the best of TERRA LUNA and its staff. I really apreciate your wisdom which is a valuable input on this internet jungle.

We had taken one of the tours offered by this place in a speed boat to a glacier. Food was terrible, water almost unavailable, treatment worst than that. The place (The glacier itself) is outstanding, sadly they don´t advice that you will need a lot of mosquito repelent, and all of us where bitten.
The staff, particulary the owner, where very disappointing on their behave towards one of the persons of the group, who got a twisted ancle. None of them helped him, neither with his backpack to make his trekking back to the boat lighter than carring his own stuff. (We helped him with our walking sticks)

We reserved a room for that same night, and at the morning of our arrival, they told us that the reservation it was not going to be honored, so we had to find another place.

As a resume, the place, is wonderful, the service sucks...

This person never lodged, neither officially booked a single night in TERRA LUNA (booking requires prepayment). Concerning the excursion itself, everybody saw the great time he had, ear his laughs, can confirm his happiness and the thousands pictures he took. In short words... this is not an objetive opinion about TERRA LUNA, but a "personal motivated" opinion due to many many external parameters that are not possible, neither necessary to expose on a web site.

It sounded like paradise - individual bungalows spread out over a hillside looking over Lago General Carrera. The landscape and view really is spectacular.
Only the Jacuzzi Bungalow was not what we had expected. First they told us that the Jacuzzi did not work - this is the main attraction of the small wooden bungalow. No bathroom, instead a seperate toilet of the living room, the shower separated from the bedroom by a curtain and a tiny washbowl in the bedroom. Please pay attention stepping on the porch for the really great view - several boards are rotted.
The former living room was filled completely with a large round jacuzzi in the floor, leaving about 30cm space to navigate around on the way to the bedroom. The jacuzzi was dirty, the water does not empty completely leaving a little pool that dried up leaving several dead spiders and hairs of the last guests behind. This and some spiderwebs made the whole thing a disgusting task to clean. When I finally finished and we opened the tap to fill the tub at least for a bath there was only a trickle of hot water. It would have taken hours to fill up the three person tub. At this point we were filled up. We stayed only for one night, otherwise I would have left this hotel immediately. The price and the website let us expect more. On our travel we also lodged in Hostals with small rooms and simple bathrooms. But these did not try to be more then just an accomodation, they cost less and they were always clean.
On our complaint nobody showed a bad conscience for the lack of cleanliness and "the water pressure would naturally be low as this bungalow is the furthest up on the hill".
As we were really in a bad mood we were finally offered a free drink and dinner. The dinner was good and apaised us a little.

We got in contact with the avisor and you will find below a resume of our talks. The point is that this person just arrived days before we started the complete remodelation of the Jacuzzi bungalow, which is now one of our best rooms!!! I send him pictures of the new cabin (see answer and new advisors comments), so comment is now not valid anymore, and we are happy to inform our guest about the totally brand NEW jacuzzi bungalow! So in order to get an accurate and actualized information, its is important to attach this answer or eliminate the now unaccurate info and description of this bungalow. Thank you for your understanding, Hi Alocin, Yes, it’s all solved. Due to the change of position of the jacuzzi, I also changed all the plumbing system. It’s all fixed!!! Hope you can try it again one of these days.... We try to do our best. It’s not easy to find the materials here, people never respect schedule, and materials arrived late in the season. The truth is that I had that idea about the jacuzzi, for a long time but for many reasons , speciallly time, we could not do it before. But thanks to your comments we had to change our priorities and are very happy ,as result is a beautiful, bigger , wood heated and very cozy room, with the same view!!! I am sure nobody else will regret to book it! The very best to you and see you one of these days, now you have my personal mail for any need! Philippe REUTER Owner Hello, thanks for the pictures. That is a great enhancement. I wish we would have arrived two months later! I hope you could also solve the problem with the low hot water pressure. Then the bungalow would be what I had hoped for from the beginning. Best regards, alocin19 on tripadvisor

We stayed 3 night in a family bungalow that sleeps up to 6 people with 2 bathrooms. Unluckily we got the bungalow the furthest from the lake/reception/restaurant, but that didn’t turn out to be a problem. Just not the best view.

The bungalow was quite nice, very cosy, all wooden, nice wood stove, the bedding excellent, we slept well. The only drawback is the kitchenette which is old, unpractical and has hardly any utensil. It is quite useless as such and a renovation or replenishment at least would be welcome.

We did have an issue at diner in their restaurant. The service was catastrophic and they charged us a fortune for the 2 kids meal, which I vigorously complained about because it seemed like being in a tourist trap at the moment, since they dont tell you the price beforehand. They ended up lowering significantly the bill the next day, which even though was what I was looking for, I can’t help but think they overcharge unless you complain. We did not have dinner at their restaurant after that, which is sad because the food is good (not the service, i repeat)

On our last morning we had no water, this was due to the string wind the night before. It wasn’t fixed before our checkout. Not a big deal but kind of a bummer.

hence my opinion that the property needs fresh money and some maintenance work.

But despite that i recommend going. We liked it there. Just dine elsewhere.

Dear Guest, I am glad and very thanksfull that you liked our cabin, our food, gave us a 4**** and would recomand our place despite the inconvenients you mentionned . Concerning your comments your are absolutely right about Family house ustensils, I checked and will correct this asap. As this is our oldest bungalow, we also are looking for a "2 plates oven" to replace the old one but unfortunately we still can not find one that fits the small space we have to put it. Concerning the prices I want to clarify that the adult complete menu is USD 25, since more than 5 years now with no increase and they are informed in the entrance of the restaurant (left after the entrance door) with all other prices from the lodge as the law obliges. Concerning your kids, maybe waiters charged you the same price for the kids cause they do not "manage" kid menu prices but this has been corrected afterwards by reception employees and the most important for us is to correct any mistake before your leave. Sorry for that misunderstanding but this is definitively not a purpose from our company to overcharge people. Reception receive the information from the restaurant and charge what they read form the paper the fill and is supposed to be signed by guest when they leave the restaurant. A correct information leads to a correct charge, so we will definitively create a "kids menu fare" to avoid any misunderstanding. Thanks you again for your constructive comments.

There are some great things about this place: lovely setting, top location, comfortable rooms, good food (lovely bread at breakfast!). The owners and management need to be commended for doing a great job in a very remote location. We did, however, feel that they seemed overwhelmed and a little jaded. We were there over Christmas and it was pretty much a non-event. In as much as we appreciate the desire to maintain a sense of remoteness and peacefulness, we felt that there could have been more of a jovial sense of community and celebration. The French owner seemed a bit grumpy which is a pity, it's such a lovely place, one of the best in the area. Christmas dinner was perfect, though, and there are lots of lovely, fun activities to do from the hotel. Still a good option around the General Carrera lake

Buenos dias. Subo y bajo este camino todos los dias en un 4x2. Los minibuses de turismo como las sprinters tambien bajan y suben constantemente. Todo depende del chofer. Podemos orientar a aquellos conductores "citadinos" a como negociar este camino cuando llegan.
