Sprawling over the rolling plains north of Mt Kenya, Lewa Wildlife Conservancy is a prolific wildlife conservancy that is popular with celebrities, conservationists, writers and photographers. Lewa found recent media attention with stories of a Royal romance and the fairytale engagement that followed. Visitors to Lewa are privy to some of the most spectacular wildlife viewing that Kenya has to offer: lion, leopard and jackal thrive on the rich diversity of prey that inhabits the area. The Wildlife Conservancy is home to the largest concentration of Grevy’s zebra in the world, and its range of habitats attracts diverse birdlife and hosts over 200 Black and White rhino.

We experienced extremely friendly service and staff at the Elewana Lewa Safari Camp. The rooms are very comfortable with tons of privacy and included amenities such as robes, slippers and washing powder. Our unit had a lovely veranda to enjoy a beverage with cookies in the morning after wake up call. The management team is very attentive and the guides are fantastic for game drives. The food and drinks were excellent and each meal was delicious.

The Lewa Safari Camp is a great location if you are on Safari in the Lewi Conservancy. The camp is fenced, but animals routinely come into camp at night. While we were there an elephant made its way into camp at night and other nights there were buffalo. During our stay we were at the far end of the camp. It is a bit of a hike, but it provided additional privacy. All of the semi-tented areas are very private. Staff come daily and open up the drapes, then close them at night to keep off the chill and add hot water bottles. The food and main lodge is beautiful. Gift shop offers a small selection of items worth looking at. This was a great place to launch for a daily safari drive to see the wildlife. There were lots of Rhino, Lion and Cape Buffalo. Sadly the drought has taken a toll and some of the grass eating animals are struggling (cape buffalo).

Dear CairoE13, Thank you for taking time to review Lewa Safari Camp. With the prolonged drought, wildlife are drawn to the few "lush" areas on the conservancy, our lodge being one of them. We have a resident herd of elephants and two buffalo that we are keeping an eye on that sneak into camp at night and depart again at sunrise. We have managed to lift the electric fence in an attempt to keep them out though. Our security team does an excellent job of looking after our guests though. As mentioned, our tents are strategically placed for privacy, and we do have a few rooms close to the dining room if guests wish to be nearer. I will pass on your kind words to the chef and team and we are glad you had a lovely stay with us. We hope to welcome you back soon! Kind Regards, Charl and the Lewa Safari Camp Team.

Lewa Safari Camp was an incredible experience. The manager, Kieth, coordinated an unforgettable three nights for my wife and I in the Lewa Conservancy. Our stay was coordinated to perfection, with many minor and simple touches that made our stay exceptional. We were always greeted after game drives with a warm or cold towel. A bush breakfast was arranged for the entire camp at a beautiful location in the bush with chefs cooking the food in front of you, as well as breakfasts packed to go for the two of us. “Sundowners” were arranged for us nightly, including beer/wine, soft drinks and snacks. We were brought coffee and cookies in the morning before our game drives.

Wilson, our guide for our stay, met us at the airstrip with cold beverages and some snacks, which were much needed after a bumpy ride from Nairobi. We can’t say enough about Wilson, he was informative, kind, welcoming and was a master at finding wildlife. Wilson always seemed engaged and it was easy to tell how passionate he was about the animals. Wilson never seemed in a rush, with our game drives averaging three - four hours. Wilson was always willing to stay out a little later if we found some animals we wanted to see. Wilson always made sure we had snacks on the drive, blankets and binoculars if needed. Wilson facilitated some unbelievable experiences, including time with numerous animals where it was just us and the animals, no other humans or vehicles in sight.

Wildlife was plentiful, seeing lions, lionesses, many rhinos, elephants, giraffes and much more. The only other safari experience we’ve had was in the Maasai Mara. There wasn’t as much volume of wildlife in Lewa Conservancy compared to the Mara, however, we still saw a great deal, and made it that much more special when we found an animal and were able to spend as much time as we wanted with no other people or vehicles within sight.

The camp itself was incredible, beautiful tents in the bush. Our room was kept up to the highest standard. Our server, Andrew, always provided top notch service. The bartender, John, was always ready to pour us a drink and have a chat. All staff were incredibly friendly, including all the above as well as Ruth, always willing to chat about how your day was going. The food was some of the best dining we’ve experienced, with the chefs checking in with you nightly. If we had one recommendation, not at all a criticism, would be to have a few more traditional Kenyan dishes as options on the menu for tourists like us to try and sample some dishes of the area. I would also highly recommend getting a massage at the spa if you have a chance, best massage I have ever gotten!

Overall we had an unbelievable positively experience at Lewa and couldn’t recommend this camp enough. Thank you Lewa for an amazing safari adventure!

Having been to Africa many many times Lewa is by far the best Safari I have ever been on. The Staff was a 10, What is so special about Lewa and the Kifaru house is the location and all the wild life you see. I have been all over Africa Lewa has the best, game drives as they are not very crowded a few jeeps and lots of Wild Life many Rhinos, Elephants, Zebras etc. Not like the Mara when you can be out with 50 other Jeeps. Being able to track the wild life is great fun as well as all the knowledge you gain. The meals and snacks were all perfectly prepared. The lodge was beautiful with 2 large fire places burning at dinner, It just does not get any better

We stayed at Lewa Safari Camp in August 2021 during the pandemic. Lewa Safari Camp is an older, more rustic, tented camp, but the overall experience here held up well in comparison to lodges with more luxurious accommodations; the daily sundowners, the bush breakfast, and having meals in different rooms and patios with their own unique views are all nice touches. The tents are single-layered canvas with zippered entries and a nice patio under thatched roofs; they are are quite comfortable with wonderful views. The kitchen made every meal a memorable experience, demonstrating a facility with many different international cuisines – quite a surprise giving the setting. Our driver guide, Tom, was incredible and extremely knowledgeable. We will never forget the time we spent watching the rhinos, elephants, zebras and antelopes gathering at a watering hole, or the spectacle of an ostrich mating dance. We came here for the rhinos and were not disappointed; the Lewa Conservancy has done a fantastic job of preserving and growing their rhino population, both black and white rhinos, and is also active in the preservation of other endangered species like the reticulated giraffe and Grevy’s zebra, all of which are incredibly beautiful animals. The Conservancy is actively transplanting selected rhinos to other conservancies in an attempt to restore their rhino populations. A few years ago, the Conservancy was designated as part of a larger UNESCO World Heritage site, a well-deserved recognition of its cultural value and the work that they are doing. 2021 was a particularly dry year and the grasslands near the Camp were too dry to attract much wildlife. As a result, we had to drive a bit more than usual to see wildlife. We’d love to return to see what it is like in a lusher year.

Thank you for your great feedback. The good news from Lewa Safari Camp is that we have started receiving our first rains and hopefully in the next couple of weeks the drought would have broken. You can already see a green tinge on the grasses around camp and the air is fresh and cool. Tom is an amazing guide, and I'm glad he took good care of you. Lewa is a remarkable conservancy and we are blessed to be part of such a great success story. Regards, Charl and the Lewa Safari Camp team

My wife and I recently had the pleasure of spending three wonderful nights at Lewa Safari Camp. The camp is located in a relatively remote section of the conservancy, which makes for a peaceful and relaxed setting. The safari tents and camp lodge are spacious and well-appointed. The camp also includes a comfortable "hide," overlooking a small waterhole. It was fun, between morning and afternoon game drives, to grab a drink and head down to the hide to look for wildlife.

Our game drive experience at Lewa was excellent. Our guide, Alex, was extremely knowledgeable and passionate about the wildlife; it was truly a pleasure to venture out with him each day. We had excellent viewing opportunities for the Big 5, as well as the endangered Grevy's zebra. The scenery at Lewa is also beautiful; it was amazing to view the wildlife, with Mount Kenya looming on the horizon!

Thank you so much for taking the time to write this lovely review! We are so glad that you enjoyed your stay with us in our little piece of paradise, we like to think of ourselves as an old style tented camp which gives our guests a true sense of being at one with nature, yet at the same time ensuring you are comfortable and feel at home during your stay. Our hide is in such a lovely position, with a beautiful view through the valley, and fortunately with a natural spring which attracts many different animals. We are glad that you found the time to wander down there with a drink. We are very proud to have Alex as part of our team, his knowledge and passion for the area and our wildlife is admirable. How fantastic that you viewed the Big 5 while in Lewa as well as our beautiful Grevy's zebra which is one of our northern specials. Lewa is a stunning conservancy and the majestic Mount Kenya only adds to its beauty! We hope you had a good trip back home and that you are sharing all your stories and photographs with your family and friends. We look forward to welcoming you back to Lewa soon! Our family of four recently stayed at this wonderful camp. The staff is absolutely fantastic starting with our hosts, Dan and Timothy. They were both very engaging and interested in getting to know their guests. Celestine was always there to greet us after every drive with amazing smelling eucalyptus towels - what a treat!
Our safari guides, Janet and Alex educated us and provided us opportunities to see so many animals but also enjoy the experiences of the sunrise breakfasts and evening sundowners while out on the land. Rafael spent time with us on a walking tour of the property and shared many facts about the property and the land.
We loved the surprise bush breakfast and our special last night with an evening Kenyan buffet served at candlelit tables. We were celebrating my husband's birthday and our anniversary and really appreciated the cake and beautiful song and dance in our honor. Last, but absolutely not least was Royford! He provided the best service and attended to all of our culinary and cocktail needs! His humor and engaging personality is one that won't be forgotten! We hope we'll get to visit this beautiful camp again in the future!

Absolutely brilliant-again. I flew into Lewa Downs on a small aircraft landing on a dirt airstrip from Wilson Airport in Nairobi. From there I joined a few other guests on a series of game drives in Toyota Landcruisers. The guides are very well educated and knowledgeable about all aspects of the private conservancy. I saw all the usual 'Big 5' but their claim to fame is the work with rhinos. In the evening we stopped for a sundowner after watching a variety of animals and birds. In the morning, breakfast was taken out in the wild. Beautiful.
The tents were comfortable and well equipped with excellent facilities. On arrival I was given a water bottle to keep with me, because Kenya has a 'no single use plastic bottle law'.

We had a great time at the Lewa Camp. The common areas are good, including a pool and fires inside the central lodge for the cold nights. The camp is fenced but given the drought elephants are regularly breaking in and doing damage to the trees, vegetable garden etc in the camp.

The tent was very comfortable with a good bed and ensuite, charge point, safe etc.

Daniel was our guide and he did an excellent job. A key reason for coming to Lewa was to see rhinos – and Daniel got us close to both white and black ones on numerous occasions – including taking into account the direction of the sun and the back ground to help us take the best photographs. He also helped us see many other animals including lots of lions. We couldn’t ask for more. We were specially impressed with his ability to spot an animal in the far, far distance, navigate the windy roads to get us close then drive off-road directly to the correct location.

While at Lewa we also did a walk one afternoon – with a different guide, a former ranger, also called Daniel - who carried a loaded gun in case of any mishap! It was a great experience to be able to see things from a different perspective and to concentrate on the plants, tracks, burrows, droppings etc. Definitely worth doing if you get the opportunity.

ELSC is a magical place. My tent lodge was so very cozy. As a solo female traveler standing less than 5 feet, I felt very safe here so thank you staff for watching out for my well being and safety. The food is too generous and delightful. I should not have eaten dinner as I was always still full from lunch but since I paid for it..... This place is dangerous: I swear i gained 20 lbs/9 kg, I would've been easy meal for predators lol. The staff was very helpful and present also. I apologize, I don't remember names but manager Sholl (phontic) and I believe his wife and pet dog were lovely. The rest of staff was great. I'm saving my guide for last because at these safair places, the guide makes or breaks your safari and overall experience. I was very fortunate to have George as my guide. George was very kind and worked hard to ensure that I and my truck safari companions saw the animals especially the rhinos. Oh Lord, so many beautiful black and white rhinos. On my last day, I had honor to meet Elvis, their famous hand-reared rhino. It was so magical meeting this glorious beast who likes to rub his horn on the truck - very dangerous to the truck exterior, lol! I will never forget how close he got to truck! I confess that when my agent planned my itinerary, Lewa was not originally on my list. On my first day at Lewa, I thought to myself that I could've saved money by not going to Lewa but now I eat my words, like I ate too much food. So if you go to Kenya, don't just go to Masai Mara, stay at Lewa and stay at ELSC and ask for George to see those wonderful rhinos and other animals

Sincerely
Cathy from New York USA

Hello! Lewa Safari Camp is located in the famous Lewa Conservancy. We have 2 family tents which would be perfect for your family. Lewa has its own airstrip, and is a 1 hour flight from Nairobi by Air Kenya or SafariLink. It is then a 40 minute drive to the camp, although you will see a lot of game and will want to stop on the way! Lewa has warm to hot days, and chilly evenings after the sun has gone down. Our rainy seasons are typically April-May and November. August is a popular time for safari to Kenya, so we do recommend making an enquiry as soon as possible. All the best!
