Bell Island is one of Canada's best kept historical Secrets. It holds the record for being the ONLY land target the Nazi U-boats hit during the war. The reason for attack: Bell Island has a mine, that when it was active, produced an extremely high quality iron ore. It turns out that Germany imported large quantities of this ore. They used this ore primarily for the German war effort including the building of the the infamous Bismark battleship ... When Canada stopped the shipments of the ore, the Germans sank some of the ships that transported the ore, and the dock they were shipped from. The Island should be on everyone's historical "to do" list to visit, when travelling to Newfoundland. When you do, make sure to stay at the Grand Wabana Inn ..... the food is amazing, and the owner/operator/head chef Alfred Hynes ensures his guests are looked after during their stay on the Island.

Last night we stayed in the luxurious accommodations of the Grand Wabana Inn on Bell Island and belle it was. The place was tastefully decorated and the service was exceptional if not remarkable. The owner, Alfred, was eager to assist us and to offer us every luxury available there. From the hot tea offered at the most opportune time, the best seating on the deck in shade of sunshine and breeze, to the most comfortable bed in the place, our stay was simply amazing! The view of the ocean from our bedroom window was spectacular. Most impressive was the skillful workmanship that was completed throughout with such care and patience. The incredible breakfast this morning finished off our stay and was plentiful and scrumptious. I would highly recommend the Grand Wabana Inn for anyone looking to spend some time on the “belle” island! Thank you Alfred for making our stay enjoyable and memorable!

What a great pleasure to find a little boutique hotel in a "remote" spot that makes a trip special. Here on the island to guide some diving friends in the Bell Island Mine, and the Grand Wabana Inn was key to making that happen. The property is as beautiful as its surroundings. The hospitality is epic, and the food is fresh, unpretentious (but a little creative), home-cooked, and delicious. The rooms comfortable and large. Absolutely recommended and worth a trip to Bell Island just to experience the place!

The place was lovely, and the service was amazing. We’d walk all over the Island, and then relax in front of the fire, reading a book. It was a great getaway. Looking forward too our next visit to this delightful hotel on this gem of an island.
