Early morning is the best time to visit this spectacular canyon carved by the Gunnison River. Don't miss the Painted Wall. Walk to as many overlooks as you can to experience the depth of a canyon that is deeper than it is wide. A visit with the rangers at the visitor center is definitely worth a stop.

Black Canyon is a great full on national park. Definitely one of the smaller parks I've been in and one of the quietest too! That's a good thing! There is hiking you can do, but it involves serious scrambling! We passed on that, but did the shorter ones to the edge of the canyon in multiple places! It's an awesome... More

Absolutely worth the stop no matter where you are coming from! The canyon is deeper than wide and it is obvious as soon as you set your eyes on it! Plenty of hikes and pull overs for photos, better not be afraid of heights! Plenty of parking at every stop, even larger trucks and trailers.

It is such a jewel to see lots of more to see and do since last here . Loved the road down to see the dam area. 16% grade and so glad to see the bottom of canyon. I believe it is just as awesome if not more so than the Grand Canyon. It could be scary for some but... More

For $15 park entrance fee we saw almost a sight to equal the Grand Canyon, not really but very impressive. We went to all the lookouts on the drive up the Canyon and then took the drive down into the base of the canyon where the dam was, where there are also rest room facilities and picnic tables. We spent... More

This national park deserves to have a bigger reputation than it does. The rim drive around the south side of the canyon is beautiful. You can drive the entire rim and do some short hikes in an afternoon. The park is a short drive from Montrose, Colorado. The drive is not particularly scary and the hikes to the edge of... More

This white knuckle drive through the park is worth it when you see the incredible canyon walls. I call this place the second best hole in the ground....behind the Grand Canyon. This is actually more amazing because the 2,700 foot drop seems more intense becaude the distance across is measured in feet and not miles. Take ranger guided hike to... More

We loved it. The rock faces are so gorgeous. We did some hiking but mostly stopping at the lookouts because we only had part of one day. I would go back. We did the part in the beginning of the day and then at the end of the day. It looks so different. Glad we did it that way.

For a camper wanting to stay in the heart of the park, this is ideal. Sites are pretty well spaced apart and have enough vegetation to allow privacy. Section B has electric but no water hookups; in fact, water has to be trucked in, so there's only one faucet per loop (A, B, and C), and you are asked to... More

Easy access from paved 2 land roads. An absolute visual feast! So much to see, Mother Nature painted this canyon beautiful. There was lots of scenic pull outs with clean rest facilities, well marked trails and opportunities to hike. Speed and warning sighs are appropriate. Lots of camping in primitively space was available but improved camping, RV and hotels were... More
