We stayed for 3 nights at the savage campground (it's the minimum). The sites are fairly big and if you don't arrive to late you still have some sites to choose from. There is an amphitheater with quite interesting performances most of the nights. The facilities are clean and well maintained.

Spent 3 nights at Savage River Campground. Loved it. It does tend to rain, so not sure I would've been as happy in a tent, but other than that Denali and this campground were amazing. The outhouses were well maintained, the camp host genial, the rangers friendly. We took to shuttle to the Visitor's Center-highly recommend. We caught the 6am... More

This is indeed the furthest campground you can drive to without a special permit. My partner and I had a good laugh, as we pulled up and spotted the camp area: 4 cars all in a semi-circle with only 3 feet between them on a patch of gravel. What a lousy excuse for a campground. Not very far into the... More

Our first campground experience at Denali NP was at Savage River campground. This area is really neat. The campground itself was really nice. It is located near the farthest point on the camp road where you can drive your own vehicle. There are also several trails in this area that were some of our favorites, including the Alpine Ridge Trail.... More

Stayed in an RV - Savage River is as far into Denali as you can travel in your private vehicle. Each campsite is relatively private and picturesque - on a clear day, you can see Mt Denali right from your campsite. Multiple trails start at/near the camp. When we went, there was not potable water at Savage River - you... More

Private, clean campgrounds at a perfect location make this place a must visit. Kind campground hosts make sure you know everything you need to understand about having a campfire in the park, and are very knowledgable about different hikes and attractions you can take.

Denali is very commercialised and overrated. Seems to have been constructed around the Railroad access. Nice exhibition and restaurant on-site. Took a drive up to Savage River, not very inspiring, mostly tundra. Saw a couple of deer and that was it. Better scenic landscapes available elsewhere in Alaska

Savage River Campground is located in a beautiful forest two miles before the Savage Rest Area (take the free shuttle to get to the rest area to hike the Savage Loop Trail). The A loop is for RVs only and the B loop for RVs and tent camper. We were walk-in tent campers so stayed in the B loop. Most... More

Basic camp site but great pitches clearly marked out. Privacy for each site. Easy walk to the bus stop to catch the park bus. Each site has a table with benches. There were toilets but didn't use them as we had an RV. You register at the visitor centre and then it is first come first served for a space.... More

The best way to absorb the most out of any place, in my opinion, is to be one with the place. And when it comes to national parks, there’s no better way to do so than camping. We camped for two nights in the Savage River campgrounds as this is the furthest one can drive inside the park without requiring... More
