Lovely large peaceful rooms with gorgeous views, and a decanter of port! The managers spare no effort to make guests comfortable and welcome. The rack of lamb at dinner and the quiches at lunch were excellent, as also the generous breakfast. The gardens are very pretty. The views of the brilliant night sky was spectacular!

We arrived at Matakohe House for accomodation , Alex the owner showed us the room first to see if it was to our liking, it was very nice , very old , but clean and tidy. Alex and Lyn were very helpful and friendly , showing us a dinner menu and telling us they would have it ready for us...

We chose this as it's 50 metres from the Kauri Museum. What a find! It has been 40 years since I had a steak as fine as the one here and I kid you not. Room well equipped including a complimentary small decanter of Port with a selection of chocolates alongside. The hosts are friendly and pleasant and able to...

Easy to find. A very warm welcome by the owners Alex and his wife Lyn, they made us feel at home in about 3 minutes. The room was very clean, comfortable and what a lovely surprise, a small decanter of port with two glasses and even a few chocolates. The view over a well planned and attractive large garden was...

Having spent the previous night van camping at the Waipoua Forest camp ground and we and our gear got very wet after rain, we decided a break from camping would be good. After visiting the Kauri museum at Matakohe we booked in at Matakohe House. What an excellent decision. The hosts were so very friendly and hospitable; the room was...

This is just the most beautiful place to stay. Our room had a beautiful outlook over garden and farmland, and opened on to the verandah. It was graciously furnished, and a large ensuite. Along the corridor of this lovely house was tea / coffee making facilities, and a TV lounge for all guests. An adjoining restaurant (also open to the...

Highly recommended. Very comfortable and clean. Alex and Lyn are most hospitable. Best breakfast ever! Nice touch with the chocolates and port provided to follow the excellent dinner. Very handy to the Matakohe Kauri Museum, which is well worth several hours of viewing.

Wonderful hospitality, fantastic food, comfortable bed. Enjoyed the little extras of a port and chocolates too. Cannot rate highly enough. We visited the Kauri Museum twice, so much to see and admission covered two days. Thank you Alex and Lyne.
