#3 of 3 inns in Pooley BridgeLocation

Value
The inn was converted from a row of cottages in the 1700s by the original proprietor Edward Richardson. Since then the inn has changed hands several times, and was taken over in May 2010 by John & Jane McGuire. The Sun is a family run establishment. Sunny by name and by nature, this is one of the most friendly and cheery hostelries in the region. It is a sizeable whitewashed building with grey framed windows, which in summer are draped with vibrantly coloured hanging baskets. Inside, the decor is simple and warm with low beamed ceilings, wooden tables and chairs and wood paneled walls and bar. It has a spacious beer garden and a grassy area at the rear with a fantastic wooden childrens play fort. It also has its own car park, which is strictly for patrons. The Sun Inn is renowned for its Real Ales and has been awarded the Cask Marque and features in the CAMRA Good Beer Guide. We offer a wide range of local ales and a constantly changing guest ale and for the non ale drinker there are lagers and stouts.

Detailed Reviews
We have just left the Sun Inn after a fantastic 3 night stay with them. Everything was perfect from checking in to checking out.
All the staff wore masks at all times and there is a hand sanitiser station as you go in every door. There is a one way system in place and arrows on the floor marking the route. The staff were constantly cleaning and it made us feel very relaxed in the current climate!
We had room 4, beautiful room, very clean and spacious and the bed was so comfortable, it was like sleeping on a Marshmallow. Very quiet even being at the front of the pub. Tea & coffee and toiletries provided too, they give these to you when you check in on a small tray. Due to social distancing restrictions, the girls aren’t cleaning rooms during stays so you have to request things you run out of.
The breakfasts were delicious and my poached eggs were perfect, definitely the best I’ve even had. One morning they’d run out of veggie sausages so the chef cooked me a falafel, which was nice. Hubby said the bacon & sausages were delicious.
We ate dinner here every evening too. Our friends who were staying at a local campsite joined us twice for dinner here and we all agreed every meal we had was delicious. One of our friends never visits the same place twice but was the one who suggested we have dinner here two nights running. Haddock & chips I would highly recommend, but to be honest, whatever you have I’m sure you’d enjoy.
Really lovely beer garden, plenty of space. Play area closed at the moment due to safe distancing.
Every single staff member was so friendly and helpful and couldn’t do enough for us. Special mention for Ian & Connie. Constantly checking on us to make sure we were okay, they couldn’t have made us feel more welcome.
Ian managed to get our group a table even when they were fully booked and he reserved us a roast dinner yesterday evening as he advised they may sell out as they were really busy. I’m so glad he did! The lamb banquet and nut roast were delicious. Massive compliments to the Chefs here, every meal we had was perfect.
Thank you so much to everyone at the Sun Inn for making our stay perfect! Pooley Bridge is beautiful and we will be back one day!

From the phone call to clarify their C-19 measures and stay we felt very relaxed and reassured. Good instructions on check-in with John, sanitizers on doors, arrows on direct the human traffic and staff wearing masks and importantly were also very polite.
Room 5 on the corner dual aspect great, 3 nights. Breakfasts, well, you've got to have the black pudding, sausages and bacon all tasted fresh...then the scrambled eggs (wow), wife vegetarian had scrambled egg then two mornings of poached all very nice. We had two evening meals the oven baked garic mushrooms, lovely one night the cumberland sausage and the next classic burger. Wife we shared the garlic mushrooms, Sweet Potato, Five Bean & Quinoa Chilli next night Falafel burger all smasshing.

We stayed 2 nights in this cute inn. The room was small but tastefully furnished and was extremely comfortable with a great shower in a modern en-suite bathroom. The highlight of the stay each day was the excellent food! It had a really good menu (which we'd already checked out for veggie options) and we were delighted to be offered additional veggie and vegan options. The breakfast was also perfectly cooked. The staff were all lovely - helpful and friendly without being over attentive; just right. We will definitely stay here again.

Lovely traditional lakes pub, good sized beer garden too. We had a lovely evening meal here this week. Tables spread out inside and staff wearing masks with hand sanitiser available.
I had the lamb and my other half had a burger. All really good, nicely cooked and hot when served. No complaints from us.

Evening meal excellent staff very attentive especially to our 4 year old. Breakfast preordered due to Covid. Delicious food and prompt service. Will definitely say here again

We stayed here for one night on a walking holiday.
The rooms were clean, with a reduced set of amenities (hairdryer on request, only a small amount of in room tea coffee).
There were trays inside the rooms to protect the floors from muddy boots.
There is some disruption in the town due to the bridge works - this inn is far enough away that you are not disturbed by the noise.
The food was pretty good, the breakfast was very filling, and it had the best yoghurt on my holiday. The evening meals were fine, though the fish pie was not the best value.

We ate here during the eat out to help out scheme, one of the main issues is the place had taken on waaaaay too many tables and orders for food that they couldn’t keep up. I ordered my meal and over heard a waitress telling another table that there was an hour wait! Which we were not told!
The bar staff member that served us obviously didn’t want to be there, he huffed with every question I asked. When I ordered the gammon he said I think it’s sold out, I said I’d order something else but he just said nah it’ll be fine. An hour later a waitress came to our table to say someone should have come over 40 mins ago to re take the gammon order because it’s sold out...
An hour an a half later we had some food, that was barely edible. I had the ‘special’ which was sea bass, it was the most tasteless food I’ve ever eaten.
If you have other options, I’d stay clear!

On a weekend break to Pooley Bridge, were staying at another hotel in the village but decided to eat on the second evening at the Sun Inn, big mistake,on entering the bar on were shown a table between two door with passing traffic, the doors were never closed properly so it was very cold. Five out of the six of us ordered the Sunday roast and all I can say is it was well below average and not something I would serve up to guests for dinner, the beef was stringy and tough, the veg was brick hard and I like mine al dente but I don't think the broccoli had even seen a pan, the roast potatoes were crisp enough on the outside but solid on the inside. Two had starters and they were very nice, there was only two choices left on the dessert menu had we wanted one but by this point just wanted to pay and leave. We returned to the hotel we were staying in and had dessert there. Not the waiting staffs problem fault that the food was not good so did not feel right complaining to them, someone needs to tell the chef tho.

+1
Myself & 3 friends spent the weekend staying at the Sun Inn to celebrate birthdays. I stayed in a single room overlooking the back with amazing views, the room was cosy & the bed very comfortable. We had our evening meal at The Sun on Saturday & we were not disappointed. Amazing home cooked food ...I can highly recommend the steak & ale pie ! Good portions & great value for money. The breakfast in the morning was also first class, plentiful & fresh & good quality produce, definitely enough to set you up for the day. A special mention to Ian, who went above & beyond to make our stay a pleasant one. Highly recommended!

We were travelling north from Stoke and wanted to find an adylic authentic country pub to stop for lunch with our dog. We found this pub through Trip advisor and phoned ahead to ensure they were open and that the dog was welcome. Pub opened at 1130 we arrived at 12. Couldnt get in as all the doors were locked. We waited outside with another 2 families before someone realised the doors were locked. We ordered at the bar our two meals and drinks both requesting skinny fries not chunky chips. After a couple of minutes the waitress came to tell the bar man there was no skinny fries. He made no attempt to tell us as he was fighting a beer tap that was "frothy as f##k" his words and a coffee machine that also didn't work. The waitress then engaged in dialogue with the bar man that she wanted to rip someone's throat out! Her words. Not the idylic atmosphere we were looking for. So the meals arrived with massive chips which we would not eat and had we been told we both would of changed our meal choice. Fish was totally tasteless and gammon steak had raw rind in parts. The best part though was the little metal ring I found in my peas. When we queried with the bar man that we had asked for skinny fries he said that they had none, we said we would of changed our order if he told us h said he wasnt told till after the meals came out. Total lie! Toilets were filthy also. The village is beautiful and worth a carefree wander but I wouldnt bother going to The Sun Inn. Totally disappointed 😞

They do have a tv, but they’re reluctant to show sport. We were the only ones in the bar, in February; and wanted to watch the 6 Nations rugby. They did show it, but only after a staff conference and we had to have the sound off.
As this is an old building, none of the rooms have a balcony. There is a large outside terrace on the ground level with patio tables for smoking.
