On an island, off the island of Newfoundland in the wild Northern Atlantic Ocean sits the Fogo Island Inn. Open since 2013, and a pioneer of regenerative tourism, the Inn welcomes its guests to one of 29 one-of-a-kind guest rooms. With floor to ceiling windows that open onto the power and beauty of one of the wildest and most powerful oceans on the planet, it is a stimulating relief from the numbing uniformity of modern times. Get comfortable with quiet luxuries including handmade furniture and quilts, and warm to the core with the heat from the room’s own woodstove. Built on the principles of sustainability and respect for nature and culture, all surpluses from the Inn are reinvested in the community to help secure a long-lasting resilience for Fogo Island and its residents.

Absolutely fantastic service and wonderful place! Can't say enough about the views nor the restaurant! Delicious cocktails, and definitely worth staying for the live music if you can make it! Only regret was not having more time to explore the island!

Waiting two years for this bucket list trip. Exceeded all my expectations. Newfoundland hospitality at its finest. From check in to check out always warmly greeted. The community host tour outstanding idea ! Aubrey was great! The food from the morning coffee and fresh baked goods to the crab shack dinner outstanding. The desserts, presentation and the wonderful cod.!! Don’t miss the cod au gratin at the crab shack dinner. Which is a great idea for solo travellers.Felt at home even as a solo traveller. Zita Cobb is a visionary can’t say enough about all there is behind the inns story, the staff the homey touches and the building. Just fabulous! Yes very pricey but so is airfare to Europe stay in Canada and enjoy this beautiful creation and community sustaining enterprise. Loved it❤️

From the moment you walk into the Inn you feel special, warm, taken care of! Considering it was early November, it was the best possible arrival!! Every detail has been thought of in the rooms. The furniture, the comfortable beds, wood burning stove, well appointment washrooms, and windows that open so you can experience the sound of the ocean! We had the opportunity to visit during a Cheese, Wine and Music event which took the entire experience from a 10 to a 10++. Hike to the top of Brimstone Head, make jam with a local home owner, enjoying a concert with local talent, the list goes on. You decide what you want to do and they will make it happen. Oh, and the food is outstanding!! Drinks are the best!!! Take the time to watch local films in the theater and visit the art gallery. So much to do, we will be back and very much looking forward to it. We also made so many new friends that we will never forget. Thank you Fogo Island Inn!!

My 4-day stay at Fogo Island Inn could only be matched by the people I met who are employed there & the people who call Fogo home. Folks who want to share their way of life, their talents, their music, their cuisine, their customs, their history and much more .... all while wanting to know me & my story. Added highlights ....welcome basket with warm ( from the oven) rolls w/butter & molasses, the morning Daybreak Basket, a guided tour of local communities, a visit to Foley's Shed, Crab boil-up Suppers , spectacular views, the rooftop hot tubs, woodburning saunas, meals created with local fresh delights & served with flare & care, wind storm the last day & night, Iceberg beer, lobster stew, wood stoves (in common areas & in room #26) , tea in china cups, the "wash" rock, the door stop I bought at the Inn that will hang on my Christmas tree & remind me of my first visit to Newfoundland, my first visit to Fogo Island & Fogo Island Inn, but by far I will be reminded of the Islanders who added to my experience, my stay.... my story !

From the moment we arrived until Rex dropped us off at our car they arranged to have at the ferry every single detail and every single encounter were precisely perfect. The location is magnificent. The Inn itself is magnificent. All of the activities we chose were both fun and informative, especially the morning we spent with Eugene and Wade, both Fogo treasures in their own right. As for dining, from the pastries and coffee waiting at our door every morning to each and every superbly planned meal, it could not have been more interesting, presented or prepared. Actually our experience with the Inn began before the actual trip when I first started planning this surprise birthday stay for my wife. Ryan and the entire reservations staff could not have been more helpful. I must have peppered poor Jessica with a ton of questions and all of her answers and guidance were right on. And, of course, what really makes the Inn extra special are its people. Everyone we encountered, whether front desk, activities, dining room or otherwise was an absolute joy to interact with and made life so easy and relaxing for us. This includes Stephanie, who made my wife’s birthday dinner so special. The Inn and its people are a magical place that gave us an experience we know can only be replicated by returning. We have nothing but the utmost admiration for all those who make it so including Zita and her vision that began it all with a purpose and a plan that we hope is contagious.

In a remote corner of the globe, off the coast of Newfoundland sits the Fogo Island Inn. Partially on stilts, it looks like one of those monstrous walking war robots from star wars. The setting is breathtaking against the Atlantic background with waves crashing into the rocky coastline. In spite of being in the boonies (no malls, fast food chains here), the Inn is ablaze with ruggedly handsome architecture, custom furnishings, spiffy accommodations, a fine dining establishment, a gym, wood fired saunas, rooftop hot tubs, an art gallery and library primarily dedicated to Newfie culture. My Newfie room was warm, in part precipitated by a wood stove and the coziness of a handmade quilt to wrap up in. The surroundings were enhanced by bespoke scandanavian furniture and wall to ceiling windows endowing the room with natural light and those spectacular oceanic views. The Dining room is one of the Inn's show stopping physical amenities featuring a dramatic vaulted ceiling and looks out onto the ocean. The elegant menu highlights 'just caught' fish and 'just picked' produce, herbs and fruit......this is fresh food.....and I ate anything cod. So, if you want a luxe isolated haven (pricey) that is surrounded by a fusion of water, rock and pristine landscape.........then try the ......Fogo Island Inn.......................an Inn At The Corner Of The Globe.

The Good Location, location, location. The Inn is on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean and is gorgeous. It is in it's tenth year so everything feels new and fresh. The architect designed the outside to represent an iceberg and the inside has spectacular views from almost every room. The desk at the entrance is very inviting as is the bar and associated seating. The view from the restaurant is spectacular and there isn't a bad table in the room. Our bedroom was incredible and the view, equally awesome. The grounds were very well maintained and the hike around the hotel was a great way to experience the wildness of Fogo Island. The Bad The food. Note it is "The Bad" and not "The Terrible". I am influenced by our recent trip to Belgium and several meals we had in Michelin-starred restaurants. Those meals had food that was delicious, the presentation was a work of art and the service was impeccable. At the Inn, the food was at times tasty, the presentation was somewhere between cafeteria and diner quality and the service was at at times, shocking, for a restaurant claiming to be of the highest caliber. In Belgium, everything appeared and disappeared seamlessly, exactly on time, with no fanfare and you barely saw the server and you certainly never needed for anything. I was shocked how often our conversation was interrupted by "How's your food tasting" or "Can I fill up your [empty] water glass", "Can I clear your [empty] plate". The menu is tiny and hardly changes day to day and really isn't very interesting at some meals. Some of it tasted OK but I had better chowder at an oyster house in Charlottetown. One breakfast was bacon, eggs, sausage and toast and it kind of tasted like bacon, eggs, sausage and toast. The best thing about the food is that they use local berries including some berries we cannot get in North Carolina and probably outside of Newfoundland. I liked the berries. The Ugly The cost. At $4000.00 per night ($3000.00 USD) we were expecting more. Emilie called ahead to reserve a massage and a pedicure on the long drive to the Inn on the Trans-Canada Highway. She assumed, as I did, that such a high end place would have a spa. Nope. There was a masseuse in town that they could arrange for a fee but she was on holiday and would not be back. There were all sorts of extras, like alcohol. They give a complimentary drink on your arrival but after that it is up to you. It was great way to dry out because I wasn't paying $16.00 for a beer that I had the day before in Gander for $7.00 and if you think that everything should cost extra because the Inn is on an island, ok, but wouldn't that be figured into the $4000.00 per day? The website boasts of the large number of activities that you can enjoy during your stay. Some cost extra, like a boat tour for $450.00 each. There are a small number (2) of activities that actually happen on any given day, like a hike or a jam-making exhibition from a local resident who uses local berries. There is an advertised hot tub on the roof that sounded very nice but you have to sign up for it in one hour intervals and we were unable to use the it at a time that we really wanted. That leads to the last irritation, the amazing lack of communication among the staff. For example, we checked in on the day of our 31st Anniversary. They told us at check-in about the restaurant (you need reservations for dinner) and "The Shack", where they have an authentic Newfoundland family-style crab dinner and they said it was fantastic and recommended we try it on either of our two nights. We decided to have it the second night. We took a walk around the property later and went into the shack and met the chef. He told us that the shack was serving dinner tonight but would be closed tomorrow. It wasn't a problem to change our plans but how did the staff not know that? That's one of several miscommunications that we haven't experienced at other high end hotels. So what are you paying for? It must be the location. We have stayed in several high end hotels in equally spectacular places. Yes Fogo Island, there are other spectacular locations on planet Earth and we have stayed in a few. For example, the Explora Hotel in the Atacama desert, a hacienda at the foot of the Cotopaxi volcano, an ecolodge in the trees over the Zambezi river. All of those were outstanding and clocked in at about 1/3 the price of the Fogo Island Inn. My recommendation is to definitely visit the island, meet the wonderful people of the island, stay in a nice B&B in Joe Batt's Arm or Fogo (two adorable towns nearby) and admire the architecture of the Inn from the outside.

A great few days at the Inn with the family. Very relaxing and highly recommend the orientation half day. We also did the shed dinner with crab - amazing - as well as the boat trip to little fogo (costs more but worth it). Food was great and a fully understanding of allergies and adjusting dishes to suit.

Our second visit was even more wonderful than our first--so much so that we are planning our third. The rooms, food, and staff could not be better. But the experience transcends each of those features. On both visits, the atmosphere caused guests to be more engaging than I believe they would otherwise be. We've only been gone a few hours and we already miss it.

THE FOGO ISLAND INN IS AN EXTRAORDINARY EXPERIENCE. LOCATED ON REMOTE FOGO ISLAND, JUST OFF THE NW COAST OF NEWFOUNDLAND, IT IS NOT ONLY A WILD AND BEAUTIFUL ENVIRONMENT BUT ALSO HOME TO FRIENDLY, KIND AND HELPFUL PEOPLE. THE INN ITSELF MEETS THE HIGHEST STANDARDS OF HOSPITALITY SUFFUSED WITH UNSURPASSED QUALITY. BORN FROM THE GENIUS OF ZITA COBB, FOUNDER OF THE INN AND THE SHOREFAST FOUNDATION, THE INN IS STAFFED, DECORATED AND RUN BY LOCAL RESIDENTS WHO MAKE THE GOURMET FOOD, THE FURNITURE, THE BED QUILTS---WHATEVER A GUEST MIGHT NEED. AN EXAMPLE INCLUDES THE 6 AM LOCALLY CRAFTED BREAKFAST CADDY JUST OUTSIDE YOUR DOOR EACH MORNING WITH TEA/COFFEE, HOMEMADE MUFFINS OR SCONES AND FRESH BLUEBERRY JUICE. EACH ROOM HAS FLOOR TO CEILING WINDOWS SO THE COMPELLING NORTH ATLANTIC IS OCEAN IS ALWAYS PART OF YOUR LANDSCAPE. THERE ARE NUMEROUS ACTIVITIES TO CHOOSE FROM AND....VERY IMPORTANT TO US....ZITA COBB DESCRIBES THE SHOREFAST FOUNDATION AND THE FOGO ISLAND INN AS PART OF AN IMPORTANT SOCIAL ENTERPRISE BRINGING BENEFIT TO THE LOCAL COMMUNITY WHILE OFFERING AN EXCITING, MEMORABLE TRAVEL OPTION FOR GUESTS.
