We stayed for a couple of days and it was very interesting to see how this young couple in their 30s are adding to the ability to source real food! Our accommodation was lovely. We met two different couples and had some engaging chats. We took in a lovely walk by the Humber River in Deer Lake along with some time at Deer Lake beach. We went to one of the two craft breweries in the area, the one in Deer Lake was closed on that Monday 😌. Lovely area to visit!

Amazing Farmstay visit!!! Lauralee Marc Kathie and Miranda were so welcoming and accommodating. We enjoyed our charcuterie board after taking a walk around the farm. Our Foraging tour introduced us to wild edible plants, herbs and flowers from which we made tea and salads. Lauralee sautéed her wild caught caribou (with permit) topped with Fussell’s cream, garlic and herbs! Delicious! A “little” something after Foraging! In the evening we enjoyed a Farm-to-table feast with courses perfectly paired with local craft beer from Crooked Feeder Brewing (for me) and handcrafted mocktails by Marc (for husband). Courses included farm grown beets topped with 5 Brothers Artisan cheese, fresh salad from their garden, grilled fresh lamb from local farm, and 3 cute berry tarts with homemade crust topped with more Fussell’s cream! All delicious! Visiting this farm introduced us to their sustainable farming practices including no till methods, organic no pesticide bug control, reusing and repurposing old structures to assist with feeding, watering, and housing their plants and animals. Lauralee and Marc are sincere in their efforts to grow a sustainable world starting in their own backyard! Awesome!!! Did I forget? Yummy breakfasts, too! With homemade jelly and locally roasted coffee!

Upper Humber Settlement was truly one of the best highlights of our entire trip in Newfoundland! Lauralee and Mark were beyond accommodating, the most friendly, kindest souls, with the most incredible stories and biggest hearts. This B&B is fairly newly handbuilt by Mark in 2014 so it is the closest you'll probably ever get to a top-of-the-line brand new build in Western Newfoundland. All amenities updated and beautiful. We'd rather stay in Upper Humber Cormack at this price vs staying in Rocky Harbour for the same, if not higher. Well worth the drive and only 15 minutes from the airport! We had several experiences including the Farm to Table Dinner, Fire Circle: Momma's Bannock, Fire Circle: Medicine Wheel, and the Farm & Forage Nature Walk. We foraged around their farm on the lands and in the greenhouses before dinner. Mark is an amazing chef and they have quite the vision. The trio cheese appetizers, wild salad with the most delicious strawberries, local lamb with turnip puree, Crooked Feeder beer pairings, mini wild blueberry / bakeapple pies, were all phenomenal. As foodies, you wouldn't expect dishes like this in the middle of the Gros Morne area. Mark even saw a moose passing by on the farm that evening. We did a combination of the Fire Circle with the indigenous medicine wheel meditation and healing led by Lauralee, plus Lauralee's Momma's Bannock on a stick with homemade butter and not-your-usual seasonings. The fire spirits were blessing us with big fires, lots of smoke, and purplish auras. There wasn't a single cloud in the sky, so we saw thousands of stars, the Big Dipper with many other constellations, and a couple shooting stars. The Milky Way galaxy in this remote area is a breathtaking, lifetime memory. We stayed in the luxurious Moonlit Loft which is a soundproofed King suite, the only suite on the 2nd floor, with the most comfortable bed like you're staying in a high end hotel, giant private bathroom with soaker tub and shower, and it's own personal balcony overlooking the fire pit, the trees, and the stars. For most of the night, we had the entire lodge to ourselves until a very humbling family from Labrador came late at night. Our Moonlit Loft was so quiet, you couldn't hear a single sound throughout the entire lodge or any animals or noises from outside. Even the other guest said it was the best, deepest, longest sleep he's had in years! We all talked for ages and it was quite an awakening with beautiful energy the entire stay. The complimentary breakfast was absolutely delicious with special fried bannock and free range duck eggs and chicken eggs, plus a rare harvested Guatemalan tea. Of course they served Dark Tickle too but this was a bonus. We completed our stay with a Farm & Forage Nature Walk, serious backcountry hiking, foraging, harvesting, and laughing from the wetlands. We were blessed with an incredible treat of the rare, hard-to-find, Caribou tenderloin, seasoned with Alder pepper, fresh sage, fresh garlic, cast iron sauteed and enjoyed in the woods. It was truly our #1 favorite dish in Newfoundland by far and we are very grateful to experience it! I highly recommend staying here as it was the best out of the 5 places we stayed in. Definitely do as many experiences with Lauralee and Mark as your schedule allows, as it's well worth it! Looking forward to visiting here again and witnessing them grow! They definitely made us truly happy with everything!

We stayed here for a little getaway and it was everything we could have hoped for and more! We booked the loft and it was perfect! The tub is fantastic, the bed was incredibly comfortable and the deck was perfect. On our first night, we enjoyed the fire pit out front. The next morning, the owners gave us a tour of their farm and we learned so much, it was fascinating! Their passion for farming is infectious. The local brewery, Crooked Feeder, is only 3 minutes down the road which was super convenient. Laura Lee makes a fantastic breakfast and the coffee is perfection! If you're looking for a place to stay in Cormack or somewhere close to Deer Lake, you will not regret booking Upper Humber Settlement! We just left and are already wondering when we can get back there :)

Stayed at the settlement last night,July 21st, 2021. Both Mark and Lauralee were fabulous, made me feel as if I'd known them always. It's an incredibly quiet and beautiful place, lovely gardens of fresh produce just outside and visited the chickens and my favorite, the gray geese. The Moonlit Room was wonderful and had a very comfy bed and a tub to die for. Breakfast of homemade waffles, warm goat cheese, mixed berries and homemade dandelion maple syrup...def will be back to visit again!!!!

Beautiful spot, so much to see and learn from Laura and her husband. It was truly a memorable experience for my kids, who adored the farm animals. Thank you; we cannot wait to return again this summer.

Had a short one night stay at The Settlement. After seeing the location on Air BnB, my sister and I knew we wanted to stay here. The picture of the ducks, and location lived up to our expectation, as well as the basket of farm fresh eggs. The hosts were so informative and friendly. They’re truly passionate about the homestead/farm life, and also passionate about sharing their experiences and skills with anyone who is interested in learning. Their passion also extends beyond their homestead, to the rest of the community of Cormack and businesses surrounding. Recommending the Countryside Abattoir (which we did visit, and enjoyed a delicious farm fresh T-bone on the BBQ provided at the homestead), the local microbrewery, Crooked Feeder, and the local Bee Farm. We hiked their wooded trail which lead to a beautiful grassy field. Breakfast was about as iconic as you would expect a farm fresh breakfast to be. It was absolutely *chefs kiss*. An incredible experience seeing farming in motion, and look forward to a longer visit in the near future (one night was all it took to make us want to move in). Lauralee & Mark were wonderful hosts, and truly inspiring to two wanna be farmers. We thank them <3
