Staying at Upper Humber is like going to the Gatlinburg, Tennessee of Newfoundland. Lauralee and her husband, Mark are superb hosts, amazing storytellers, and excellent caretakers of the environment! Staying at Upper Humber Settlement is a must for any traveler passing through Deer Lake or traveling in Newfoundland for that matter! Oh and don't forget to try their yummy jams and jellies made fresh, served and sold at Upper Humber! Each time I've sat at the table my breakfast plate was always a "happy" plate (empty and clean) at the end of breakfast - farm fresh eggs, bacon, greens, muffins, toast, jams, and more served each morning. Or if requested they have vegan options or dietary options as needed.

We stayed here for a little getaway and it was everything we could have hoped for and more! We booked the loft and it was perfect! The tub is fantastic, the bed was incredibly comfortable and the deck was perfect. On our first night, we enjoyed the fire pit out front. The next morning, the owners gave us a tour of their farm and we learned so much, it was fascinating! Their passion for farming is infectious.
The local brewery, Crooked Feeder, is only 3 minutes down the road which was super convenient.
Laura Lee makes a fantastic breakfast and the coffee is perfection!

If you're looking for a place to stay in Cormack or somewhere close to Deer Lake, you will not regret booking Upper Humber Settlement! We just left and are already wondering when we can get back there :)

Amazing Farmstay visit!!! Lauralee Marc Kathie and Miranda were so welcoming and accommodating. We enjoyed our charcuterie board after taking a walk around the farm. Our Foraging tour introduced us to wild edible plants, herbs and flowers from which we made tea and salads. Lauralee sautéed her wild caught caribou (with permit) topped with Fussell’s cream, garlic and herbs! Delicious! A “little” something after Foraging! In the evening we enjoyed a Farm-to-table feast with courses perfectly paired with local craft beer from Crooked Feeder Brewing (for me) and handcrafted mocktails by Marc (for husband). Courses included farm grown beets topped with 5 Brothers Artisan cheese, fresh salad from their garden, grilled fresh lamb from local farm, and 3 cute berry tarts with homemade crust topped with more Fussell’s cream! All delicious!
Visiting this farm introduced us to their sustainable farming practices including no till methods, organic no pesticide bug control, reusing and repurposing old structures to assist with feeding, watering, and housing their plants and animals.
Lauralee and Marc are sincere in their efforts to grow a sustainable world starting in their own backyard! Awesome!!!
Did I forget? Yummy breakfasts, too! With homemade jelly and locally roasted coffee!

Stayed at the settlement last night,July 21st, 2021. Both Mark and Lauralee were fabulous, made me feel as if I'd known them always. It's an incredibly quiet and beautiful place, lovely gardens of fresh produce just outside and visited the chickens and my favorite, the gray geese. The Moonlit Room was wonderful and had a very comfy bed and a tub to die for. Breakfast of homemade waffles, warm goat cheese, mixed berries and homemade dandelion maple syrup...def will be back to visit again!!!!

Had a short one night stay at The Settlement. After seeing the location on Air BnB, my sister and I knew we wanted to stay here. The picture of the ducks, and location lived up to our expectation, as well as the basket of farm fresh eggs. The hosts were so informative and friendly. They’re truly passionate about the homestead/farm life, and also passionate about sharing their experiences and skills with anyone who is interested in learning. Their passion also extends beyond their homestead, to the rest of the community of Cormack and businesses surrounding. Recommending the Countryside Abattoir (which we did visit, and enjoyed a delicious farm fresh T-bone on the BBQ provided at the homestead), the local microbrewery, Crooked Feeder, and the local Bee Farm. We hiked their wooded trail which lead to a beautiful grassy field. Breakfast was about as iconic as you would expect a farm fresh breakfast to be. It was absolutely *chefs kiss*. An incredible experience seeing farming in motion, and look forward to a longer visit in the near future (one night was all it took to make us want to move in). Lauralee & Mark were wonderful hosts, and truly inspiring to two wanna be farmers. We thank them <3

Laid back yet well appointed home on a sustainable 2 acres of property. The owners, Lauralee and Mark are down to earth owners of this B&B. They work the farm, well respected in the community. Forgot to mention this is a young couple in their 30’s but have old souls. Lauralee provided us with additional things to do in the area to add to our list of where we wanted to visit. The breakfasts were superb and the presentation was outstanding. We both felt relaxed in the common space, walking around the property or sitting on the deck. Definitely would recommend this B&B to those who want to go into Gros Morne hiking or take in the local Insectarium, Sir Richard Squires Provincial Park (salmon fishing as they jump upstream) or Deer Lake.

The check in process was simple. Our room had our names on it and indicated time for breakfast the next day.

The place itself was very warm and inviting. A lot of thought was put into the place from the open sitting area for watching television or reading, to a coffee/tea bar, patio, and items available for use in the washroom. Epsom salt for the soakers, hair dryer for the ladies, non slip mat for the clumsy, lighter for the romantics, and extra soap/shampoo for the forgetful.

A bulletin board hung on the wall indicating local attractions that can be visited when, difficulty rating of trails at the national park, recommendations for local eateries, and sights to be seen. It’s a lot of useful information organized in a thoughtful way.

We only stayed one night, but it was very memorable. We signed up for the Farm-to-Table Story Telling dinner experience. The set up with a bug net was thoughtful. The timing of the course and story telling was just right. It was an engaging experience. We enjoyed learning a bit of history of the area and about the people who once resided in the area. It was also a good way to mingle with the other guests as well. The food was delicious.

The only complaint is that we picked a cold night to be out there. It would have been nice to have a heater available or be given the option to finish off inside at the kitchen table. Some form of light would have been nice to have as well. Not deal breakers, just nice to haves.

Lauralee was a great host and made us feel right at home. We enjoyed our stay immensely and wished we had more time to try out some of the other activities.

The room was clean and comfortable. A set of towels and amenities were provided. Although we had a small room, the closet doubled up as a desk. It was a good set up.

We booked the Farm and Forage experience with our host Lauralee. Although it was a drizzly day, she led us through a couple of hours of an engaging, eye-opening walk through their farm and adjoining forest. She gave us little pease pudding bags and we picked choice bits from wild plants and those grown in the garden and learned about just how much edible greenery we simply walk by every day. Throughout the walk we learned a little of life here in Newfoundland and of Lauralee’s own indigenous roots.
After out bags were full, we went back to the gazebo and prepared ourselves salads from the greens while Lauralee fried us up some of the local delicacy that are cod tongues and prepared tea from our choice of dried herbs.
It was a unique and enlightening experience that we’ll be talking about for years to come.
You will not regret booking this outing!

Great visit to Upper Humber Settlement and would highly recommend to friends. My wife and I stayed one night, took part in the Farm to Table Storytelling Dining Experience and the Farm and Forage Experience.

The accommodations were very nice, clean and comfortable. The Storytelling dinner was fantastic! The food & beverages were amazing and Lauralee is a great storyteller taking us back to the trials and tribulations of the first settlers to farm the area. The Farm and Forage Experience was also exceptional learning about and gathering lots of the edible things around and consuming our finds at a lovely lunch outside.

We stayed for a couple of days and it was very interesting to see how this young couple in their 30s are adding to the ability to source real food!
Our accommodation was lovely. We met two different couples and had some engaging chats.

We took in a lovely walk by the Humber River in Deer Lake along with some time at Deer Lake beach. We went to one of the two craft breweries in the area, the one in Deer Lake was closed on that Monday 😌.

Lovely area to visit!
