My husband and I have stayed at this resort many times. We really appreciate how the staff goes out of their way to try to accommodate you. They are our family away from home.
I was most impressed with the way the resort worked with the materials they had. Anyone who has been to Cuba knows about the shortages. I don't need milk in my coffee or orange juice in the morning. I have it at home but when you are there, go with the flow. When it is available they will offer it to you. They got very creative in the restaurant using whatever the market offered that week. The food actually tasted pretty good.
Rooms were disinfected, (you could smell it) when you arrived. Common areas were kept clean. Of course the toilet paper issue in the public bathrooms will always be there. Non smoking areas were enforced. All Cubans, both staff and guests adhered to the covid protocols. I wish I could say the same for some of the international tourists.
The bars were stocked. Red wine with dinner was hit and miss but they offered a sangria or the white was plentiful. The mojitos in the lobby are the best. Pina colada is offered at the beach bar and there is also a second beach bar with beer and mixed drinks.
When you have to return home you get your test done 3 days before you leave. You can pay money instead of using your credit card. $40 canadian. Make sure you use the arriveCan app. They do ask to see it at the airport.
Hopefully we will be returning for New Years Eve. Looking forward to seeing my family again. Hasta pronto Tortuga

We arrived at 3 PM. $3600 per room if you want to check in early we hope it's not worth it. They give us han 4.10, lobby bar no ice, everything hot. Poorly prepared dinner, little seasoning and salt. They never brought me the liquid I asked for and a spoon never arrived. Good show, entertaining. Breakfast...many flies although variety. Nobody answers. Beach located in an excellent place. Clean and large pool. The caney eye... propped up the roof, it scared me. Lunch, terrible organization, not enough cutlery, confused staff, queue, small premises, more than a year in repairs at the restaurant premises and it is still in a small one. Scarce offer. Think before you go.

Compare to other hotels we stayed in Cuba, this one was above the standards. Excellent location, beautiful beach, Food becomes tedious and boring after couple of days, Even coffee or coffee cups vanish at certain times at breakfast.
Internet is a huge problem slow and confined to certain areas where Wi-Fi is available (in fact, everywhere in Cuba) also beware of mosquitos. Hygiene is an issue as we had the best rooms overlooking the sea but various hairs on the bed and pillows. Tired looking facility but hey it is Cuba, Good value for the price you are paying. Hotel staff are very helpful and will accomodate any request as far as our experience goes.

This review that I will make is no longer even about the hotel, if you can call it that... I really don't understand what the 3 star rating depends on because I don't understand where they are... I don't understand why they don't close this, who does it depend on? It's a shame since you arrive...it's 4 o'clock and you get to the room and it's disorganized and everything is dirty, sheets, pillows, the maid tells you to go away and she'll fix it later...they change your room and it's almost the same story...there is no hot water, the balcony and the seats are super dirty full of dust, the hallway in front of the room is dirty, with knobs knocked off, there is no light at night anywhere in the block, cockroaches in the bathroom, the cup is dirty...you get anywhere and there are only 2 drinks, you repeat them and the things in the drink you already had are gone, you go to the buffet which is not a buffet either fish beef and continue happy, there is practically nothing At night you have to see what they have in our case, a single hamburger with two pieces of pineapple and fruit bomb that doesn't satisfy anyone, so you have to wait to eat the one you have to order another one and so on because you are going to order two hamburgers? , that's a lack of respect haha ... I really could say 10 thousand more negative things, I don't understand how they don't feel sorry for scamming people like that ... they should put it as camping that lacks everything everywhere, it's unnecessary I would say don't spend your money here, if you don't believe me, come and delight yourself with the disgustingness of this center....only two positive things, the attention of some workers (counted on one hand) and the beach, which is beautiful, although They only have to pick up the garbage because it doesn't have much merit... If you who are reading me want to have some bad days because your life is going very well, without a doubt this is the right place...Great HOTEL La Pena

This is the worst hotel there can be. We were really hungry. A terrible dining room with a bunch of flies on the appliances, with mangy, sick cats that rub against you right on the dining room terrace. It was impossible to eat what to eat from food. With whom we talked, some went to a nearby hotel, one man made swims in the evenings and caught someone, then they grilled him for a couple of dollars. People really survived as best they could. There is nothing nearby. Don't buy anything in stores. There seems to be a bar on the beach, but there is nothing there. More precisely, they can sell you a bottle on the sly for $10, and if you ask for a pour, they will say that there is nothing. The staff is drinking. He smokes right next to the guests. If an employee approaches the bar, even a janitor, the bartender will serve him first. Employees in dirty, untidy clothes. The swill (there is no other way to call it) is terrible. Non-alcoholic soft drinks include ice water and Yuppie. There are simply no colas and other sodas. They may not wash the cup after drinking water and pour it for you after another person.
The rooms are poor. Well, ok, not a bad bed, we slept well. Among the cosmetic accessories - body lotion)))) there is not even soap, but lotion was provided. Cleaning is bad, dirty. Disdainful to touch everything.
On the plus side, there is a good territory and a lot of vegetation.
Beautiful ocean! This is not the hotel's fault. There is a lot of garbage on the beach that is not cleaned up at all.
The photo is not from the hotel, but from the surrounding area, when we walked around in the hope of buying something to eat.

I was on vacation in Cuba in the summer of 2023 and it was an ideal experience! The staff was very attentive, especially the maid in my room (Damara) was on top of everything and always available to help with anything that was needed. I highly recommend this hotel, thank you very much to the entire team!

Where to begin....in short, this hotel was horrible!!

I had to change rooms on the first night because the room smelled wet and looked like it hadn't been touched in years. So much dust piled up on the lamps, stained bedding and a disgusting bathroom. I immediately asked for a new room which they gave me. It was better but still not anywhere close to what I would choose (I was with a group and didn't choose this hotel). The food was YUCK!! I went to the buffet once and didn't eat anything and never went back. No variety available, the food was cold and there were so many flies! The restaurant was dirty and looked like they never actually clean it. I couldn't stomach it so I never went back. The door of our bathroom was separating and falling apart and a roach greeted me as I went to shower. The towels are really short and thick like floor mats and about 99% of them where visibly stained just like the sheets. On one occasion when preparing for bed I pulled back the top covering of the bed and found that the bottom third of my flat sheet was covered in mildew! I was mortified! I threw it off the bed and put it near the trash. There is no way the maid should've put that sheet on the bed. The AC had issues but once reported it was taken care of pretty quickly. The snack bar only offered a ham and cheese sandwich and the lobby bar charged for drinks which is quite ridiculous at an "all inclusive" hotel. There were many days when they ran out of ice, tea, honey, etc which was annoying. They also charged for wifi which was unexpected and I only got 1 bar of that in my room which totally defeated the purpose. The staff were mostly friendly and accommodating. Totally disliked the open smoking allowed and not designated areas. The stray animals roaming the lobby were also a turn off as well as the flies and mosquitoes.

Overall this property is in MAJOR need of a renovation. Even a local that we ran into said that this hotel was no good and if we had time that we should switch to another hotel. Suffice it to say, my mom and I will be staying here or recommending this hotel to anyone...

Ever!

The good: The beach is fantastic, simply one of the best! The location is good and easy to access Varadero.

The bad: Food is woefully substandard and meager. Airline food would put them to shame. Mostly only disposable plastic cups that tend to run out quickly. Snack bar is mostly a big miss with respect to timing and quality. Dated units in desperate need of simple maintenance.

The ugly: No beach/pool towels for first five days. A room with a safe that doesn't have a key is not a feature! No spoons!, eating ice cream using disposable plastic knife. Room keys malfunctioned daily, either won't open or won't lock when desired. Repair guy comes around once a day on request in late afternoon. Room inside door handle fell off leaving occupant stranded (no phone to front desk). Staff tend to overtly lie about internet. Must pay $1 Can per hour, but availability is sketchy (the internet doesn't go down, but government signin services do regularly) and time runs out because, well I "didn't keep track of it well." The truth is (all of Cuba) that internet access is limited by individual code to 5 hours at a time, and must then be reset again.

Overall. a very unpleasant and unfulfilling time spent here. Google maps presents this place as 5 star hotel; my take is a generous 1.5 star. There are many better places to stay than here; and the general trend is that going east on Varadero the quality improves dramatically. Spend the difference and have the holiday you really want.

The hotel may have been as the photos show it when they opened it to the public, now that hotel is a nightmare! Nothing to do with the reality of that hotel, I'm going to start listing the things that don't work
1- The restaurant was dirty and had flies. The flies landed on the food, on the tables (they were dirty and the plastic on the tables was sticky. They had some containers to store juice and soft drinks that were dirty and old. The food was salty and the worst thing was that they were serving uncleaned prawns. I It was so disgusting to eat there that I didn't even try a bite. I went to the bar (that one in the photos) and ordered an ice cream and, to a surprise, they gave me a fork to eat the ice cream. It was supposedly a mango ice cream, but we also asked for no milk. some drinks and they advised us to save the plastic cups because there weren't enough.
The pool water was cloudy and I saw an employee pour chlorine into the water using a dirty, paint-stained bucket. Some chlorine pellets fell on the floor around the pool on the dirty, wet and slippery floor.
The hallways leading to the rooms have no light, I could go on telling you about the things that don't work but I want to say that the service staff are very friendly and are not responsible for the things that don't work in the hotel.
Varadero beach is a beauty, white sands, blue water, until more than fifty people arrived, not being part of the hotel but living in the surrounding area. We had to get out of the water because we couldn't even swim among so many people; including a man parasailing.
In the rooms there are two power outlets, a broken table, the balcony door did not have a lock, the toilet tank was broken, the drying towels were hand towels and they do not put shampoo or conditioner in the showers.
I want to tell you that probably everything I'm writing about has been fixed by date because apparently I was the first person to complain about the hotel. The agency through which I booked the hotel is: Solways Cuba and as a courtesy they changed me to the Hotel Caguama without paying extra; but I had to pay for transportation to the hotel on my own.

We have been visiting the hotel as a family for years and the option is spectacular.

Difficulties are resolved and concern for the client's well-being is paramount.

The difference between national and international clients is not appreciated in the treatment of workers.

The workers maintain the hotel with their own efforts and it is something that is appreciated and we highly value it in the current times.
