This was my first visit to Cuba and will definitely not be my last. I am glad to have chosen this resort for its superb access to the golf course and beautiful beach, and most of all for the friendly, efficient and professional service we received throughout our stay. A special thanks goes out to Elizabeth Venegas who reached out prior to our arrival and promptly answered the many questions I had as a first-time visitor. I explained that I was traveling with my elderly mother who has mobility issues and Elizabeth ensured that everything possible was done to make our stay a safe and enjoyable one. I appreciated the upgrade we received to the Level service with the regular ocean view room I had booked (they appreciated that I had reserved online directly through Melia). The room design was not modern by any means, but it was bright, airy and comfortable and was kept extremely clean by the warm and welcoming housekeeping staff.

The food at the buffet and in the a la carte restaurants was not great, but it was more than adequate with a wide variety of options, and we sometimes came across some very good dishes. It was always served by attentive and pleasant staff who made every meal an enjoyable experience. They quickly came to recognize "mama" and I and remembered our preferred food, beverage and seating choices.

We requested an excursion to Havana and Elizabeth arranged for a one-day guided tour by taxi that took into account our need to avoid walking long distances. Thanks to Feliz's knowledgeable, professional and caring service, we were able to take in the highlights of the city while he drove us from place to place, walked slowly with us, took frequent breaks and explained the rich history.

Finally, the entertainment at the resort was a nice mix. We particularly enjoyed listening to the violinist as we relaxed with drinks after a day on the beach. Looking forward to an encore visit!

We stayed on the first floor, in a classic room, overlooking the Xanadu, the golf course and also the ocean. This was our first stay at this hotel. We chose it as you can walk over to the golf course. Room was clean, had to have the sheets on one bed changed the day we arrived as it was dirty, but that was done fairly quickly. They leave a large bottle of water every day and if you drink the two beer and/or two pop in the mini fridge, they are replaced as well. Front desk staff was hit and miss whether you would have you question answered or not...depended on who was working that day! For Wifi, you buy a card for 1 CUC, that gives you 60 minutes of use. You can exchange money, your countries currency, at the front desk, just make sure not to have much, if any left, when you go to leave the country, as CUC's are not to be removed from Cuba. And you have to pay a surcharge to change them back to your own currency! We just exchanged what we thought we would need every couple days. Tipping for good service is a nice thing to do. They don't make much money in Cuba. It's a tough life!! The beach at this resort was great. Lots of room to sit under a shade or in the sun. You can walk from the Xanadu down to the Melia Varadero without issue. Lots of security on the grounds. The beaches in Cuba are public, for everyone to use, local people too. There are lots of daily activities happening just check the boards by the buffet. The buffet was great for every meal. We found breakfast and lunch were the best, but there is lots of variety of everything. so you can always find something to eat. The staff in the buffet are so friendly. They greet you like an old friend. We tried three A La Carte restaurants, La Limoncello, we had penne with pesto and shrimp. Might have been one shrimp cut into five piece on my plate. Not so good! La Robelza, again not so good, I had the chicken dish which was fine but my husband had the beef. It was so tough he couldn't chew it, so we ended up going to the buffet for his dinner. However, the La Arcada was amazing! Go there three times if you can. Best to book your A La Cartes through the Las Americas website before you go. They don't reply to your request but when you check-in they give you the vouchers. Golfing was great! Beautiful course and you end overlooking the Atlantic! What a view! There is before dinner entrainment on the outside patio or in the lobby, with amazing singers and musicians. Every evening there is something going on in the theatre.

Before I get started, I want to say, we have been to Cuba only 4 times, but this is the only resort I would recommend to a friend. We were there Feb. 18-25, 2020.

The resort is a great size, both sure how many rooms, but its easy to find and run into friends and other guests. This is a true 4.5 Star.

Positives:
Great Beach, great hotel layout, adults only, golf course next door, great service, great location, clean and good sized rooms, nice beds, lobby is close to beach and pools, lounge chairs were always available, ATM available next door at the plaza, staff are great.

Negatives:
Food is just OK, First room had no view and no balcony and was charged $200 for an upgrade, water was always hot but little pressure, everyone is looking for a tip, drinks were watery for the first day then were ok, elevator is very slow and being on the fourth floor had to use the stairs at times, 2 hours to Havana. It did not bother us, but there was no nightlife. All is quite after 11:00 pm.

Tips:
Bring enough Canadian money for the week, using a credit card always has a up charge.
Make sure to always have 1 CUC bills for tipping,
Bring your own face cloths, none are ever available.
Make sure to visit Havana, it will be well worth it.
Make sure to do the Xanadu (Dupont Mansion) walk with Elsy, its at the golf course next door,
Do your dance lessons with Rey
If your going to golf more than once, bring your own clubs, they are $30 CUC each day.

Many of the Canadians we ran into, have been to this resort multiple times, some over 10 times, so expect 80% Canadians., 10% Russians and 10% other Europeans. Its a nice mix of people.

All in all, it was a great week, I hope you enjoy it as much as we did.

This was our third visit to Melia las Americas, Varadero, for Christmas.
The hotel was just as we remembered but there have been some changes and there is still room for improvement.
The bedrooms still need refurbishing (first stay here was in 2015): the furniture and bathroom fittings are outdated and showing their age.
The small backstop to the top of the beside tables fell away, revealing untidy electric sockets, and had to be balanced back into place.
A deep clean of floors is needed as lines are obvious where the mop has / hasn't been used over the years.
The fantastic Lobby continues to be the heart of the Hotel with wonderful entertainment for the holidays and lovely decorations. There is live piano, saxophone, guitar music every night. All very high standard.
However, the sofas have had it! They are now uncomfortable and should be replaced.
The beach remains 6* and some relocation of the water sports facilities and the beach volley ball net has happened - all good decisions.
The beach loungers really need replacing now. Even the mattresses don't help!
The beach bar was under refurbishment and reopened while we were there. Very good, too, and there is now a beach drinks service!
But who was it that suggested removing most of the palm leaf beach umbrellas and replacing them with, what we could only describe as, 'stables'?!
These new, roughly hewn wooden structures are ugly, uninviting and claustrophobic. They form two rows at the back of the beach, closest to the bar, and are not worth hanging keeping. Not even for the shade value.
Bearing in mind that all beaches in Cuba are public, perhaps something was said about the space taken up by the original umbrellas?
Even so, every guest we spoke to agreed; so please get rid of them and give us back the palm leaf umbrellas that we all love so much!
Christmas Eve at Melia las Americas is always a treat, with wonderful entertainment and artistes in stunning costumes - and on stilts! - circulating among the guests.
However, the much anticipated tables in The Terrace restaurant (our favourite), loaded with fresh crab and all manner of prawns, langoustines, etc. were not to be had.
Yes, there were great butter sculptures and decorations but nowhere near the choice of shell fish of previous visits and, try as we did, we couldn't find one salt grinder that worked. They were all clogged with wet salt and useless! This was drawn to the Supervisor's attention but the situation didn't improve. It's the little things!
Overall, our feeling was that the Hotel was far from full this year and that financial cutbacks had been put in place.
Thankfully, the friendly staff, including some good friends now, were still there and that made our stay.
So, some good and some not so good points in this year's review of Melia las Americas but, overall, we'll be back asap to this Hotel, Varadero and Cuba!

We had The Level Grand Suite Sea View room 2210. It has a view of the DuPont House and the Sea. The Sea view was partially obstructed by the palm trees.

The room is quite large, it has a separate bedroom and a bathroom with a toilette and bidet. And a second toilette. Unfortunately, it did not have a balcony but the windows do open.

The "Level" package gives you you're own concierge, so we checked in and out separately from everyone else. They also gave us Champagne plus two premium bottles of alcohol. Whiskey and Rum.

Level guests also get their own restaurant for breakfast and lunch. We only did it once for breakfast. It's quieter, much quieter than the main buffet restaurant but as such there is less selection.

Level guests also get pre-booked dinner reservations at one of their specialty restaurants. And Level guests get their own area of the beach, which was always full and I am not sure if it is enforced. Level guests get a silver bracelet while most people get red.

Is it worth it? If you are going to get the grand suite then the Level is already a part of the package. If you are looking for something exceptional? Well, it depends on what matters. If saving check in time, saving time having to book dinner reservations and having you're own quiet breakfast and lunch place is important then sure, it will be worth it to you.

Other than that, our fridge was stocked daily. Our rooms kept clean. No complaints there.

The food is significantly better than we were expecting. And in some restaurants, quite good.

The bar service at the coffee bar was great and the staff there friendly.

Overall it is a good property and has some great staff.

I stayed here for a 2 week, all inclusive, adults only vacation. Value for money was great and the premises were clean in a good state of repair. There was an extensive choice of dining options, although making reservations for the a la carte restaurants was not very efficient. One standout, memorable employee was Roberto who tended bar. He was extremely friendly and helpful and remembered me each time I had the pleasure of encountering him. Housekeeping was excellent, but there was an ongoing problem with daily restocking of the mini-fridge with 2 bottles of beer, a few soft drinks and a large bottle of drinking water. If I visit Varadero again, I would not hesitate to stay here. Helpful hints: Ask for a room on the 3rd or 4th levels to ensure a good view of the ocean. Also, closely examine the local currency when exchanging your money. If there is so little as a pen mark on the bill, they will not accept it as valid payment.

My family and I stayed at this great resort in December 2019. I must say that my experience here was what we expected. I can finally say that we stayed at a resort in Cuba that was worth the money. Let me start by saying that the check in process was quick and easy, the reception staff was courteous and made us feel welcome as soon as we approached the reception counter. The lobby was really nice with many plants and decorations. The bartenders at the main bar were very friendly and helpful whenever I had a question or two about the resort. The buffet was spacious and didn't have to make a long line for anything unlike other places in Cuba, the food was great in the buffet area and also in the gourmet restaurants. The management team was great, Zahily Alzola was constantly walking around making sure the guest's were happy and assisting them with anything they may need. The snack bar was open 24 hours and had plenty of food and drinks. Walking out to the courtyard we had this beautiful view overlooking the ocean, there was plenty of tables and chairs in the courtyard to chill out and have a drink or a snack, once again the staff was great and very pleasing. The pool was very clean with plenty of places to sit and relax.
The snack bar by the pool had good food and quick service, we sat here everyday for lunch as we spent most of the day outdoors.
The beach area was clean with plenty of umbrellas and chairs for sunbathing, there was also staff members walking around the beach making taking food and drink orders, once again very friendly and efficient.
The rooms were spacious and very clean, I stayed in one of the bungalows suites and it was absolutely gorgeous with two floors living area and bar, two balconies, two bathrooms. The rest of the family stayed in the main building on the fourth floor which is called the Level, their rooms were very clean and had awesome views.
Overall my experience at this great resort was satisfying and would highly recommend to others. We will definitely be returning in 2020!

This was my 3rd stay at Las Americas. I do not golf but still value the other services and amenities of the hotel. It seems very well run and staffed by a great group of people. The location of the resort and of Varadero in general allows you to easily get away from the resort, if you want, for a change of pace and see more of this beautiful country.
The beach is a nice stretch and the pools are always clean. For the most part, I find the food to be quite good, at times OK, and in some cases it has been excellent. The resort does attract a bit of an older crowd, some younger couples, and groups of golfers. The entertainment ends at 11pm and the grounds become pretty quiet at night. Currently (January 2020) one of the pools is under renovations, but should be done soon. I think Melia could be more transparent about this work and any future renovations to reduce negative surprises upon arrival.
The lobby bar is a great place to meet for pre and/or post-dinner drinks and chat with other guests. It is well stocked. The bar staff are great and skilled. After a few days, they become familiar with you. All of them always provided me with friendly service but I give a special nod to Javi.
There are many staff behind the scenes that do good and important work that may go unnoticed. Two actually remembered me from my previous visit. Ricardo, a groundskeeper, and Girrardo (not sure of the spelling) from the Security team.
I chose to upgrade to the Level service. The staff at the Level have been fantastic with me. I want to make special mention of 3 deserving women that I seemed to often encounter this past stay. They are Paloma, Lia and Yohandra. Each of them helped me with various requests and always in a professional and friendly manner. I enjoyed stopping by the Level sub-office to say hi, have a brief chat, and usually a few laughs with them.
I can share a story of a couple on their honeymoon that I met at the lobby bar They had arrived the night before and immediately encountered some problems with their room and reservation. The woman was literally in tears and wanted to leave. But then there was a knock on their door and it was Paloma who came with empathy and with solutions. The woman told me that Paloma’s actions and words essentially rescued their honeymoon as far as she was concerned and they were now thoroughly enjoying their vacation at Las Americas. I thought that was a fantastic story of great service by an employee going beyond what is expected.

Visited Melia Oct. 21 to 28, 2019 and most recently Jan. 18 to 25, 2020. If you are looking for an amazing golf and/or beach experience and a resort that is packed with Canadians, this is the right resort for you! In October my husband and I had a great week celebrating my 50th birthday. We golfed together on my bday, and he golfed a few mornings while I slept in, enjoyed my cappuccino from Robleza on the beach, soaked up some sun, read my book, and then met him for lunch at La Robleza. It’s a gorgeous restaurant patio overlooking the pool and ocean. Rachel served us daily and she was superb. We enjoyed the tastiest white fish fillet and grilled veggies. Pina coladas, Havana Specials (pineapple and rum), white wine and the best champagne (can’t get enough of it!). The food at Melia is awesome if you are used to eating healthy! Lots of beef, pork, chicken, fish, veggies and salad to choose from. Great variety of cheeses and the bread is to die for. Made daily and no preservatives. The pizza is super yummy too. The hamburgers served at the beach bar and restaurant are so good – two moist patties topped with a fried egg, a slice of ham, tomato and lettuce on a homemade bun! It’s just as good if not better than the same burger you can order in Canada at The Works. We had a beautiful room overlooking the 15th hole on the golf course and on my birthday they left us a bucket of champagne in our room to celebrate after our round of golf. Our visit in January was much the same but with friends to enjoy more golf and more champagne of course! If you love a challenging golf course with amazing views, you will love the Melia Varadero Golf Course adjacent to Melia Las Americas. Great weather and great experiences. Before and after dinner we enjoyed the bar lounge where the staff put on their own show in the evenings – what we call the “Raul Show”. We laughed so hard our faces hurt. He does this silent film routine behind the bar that coincides with the singing and dancing performances in the lobby. He had us in stitches during the opera performances. Don’t ever stop being you Raul – because you are the best. During both trips we upgraded to the Level, where you get quite a few perks – such as pre-booked restaurant reservations for 7:30 p.m. at the four restaurants – Sakura, La Robleza, Arcada and Il Limoncello. Also enjoyed our own private pre-dinner drinks at the Level Lounge where we sipped on champagne and enjoyed premium spirits. We golfed each morning, enjoyed the beach all afternoon, ate well each day, laughed, drank and danced the night away to the band in the lobby. Highly recommend a week or more at Melia Las Americas!

Room Tip: Love staying in the hotel vs. bungalow with a view overlooking the golf course. We are golfers so...

Awesome Resort!

Food- Fantastic. So many options at the buffet, the a la cartes were our favourite though! I thoroughly enjoyed the lasagna from limoncello. The japanese restaurant was delicious as well as entertaining!

Service- Great. Room service always came when called, Noel helped us get our bags to our room and went the extra mile to show us around the room.

Activties- Jordy!!! What an amazing games/entertainment host. He can communicate in multiple languages and was always so enthusiastic and energetic.

Rey!!! aqua fitness was a blast and the yoga was serene :)

The activities crew killed it!

Late night entertainment: Awesome dance shows in the threatre every night. Live music in the lobby (piano, violin, trio's). Fashion shows! Hardly ever a dull moment. Also a big screen tv playing sports every night.

Beach was never too busy while we were there. Never had an issue finding a shady spot for my fair skin.

Overall a pretty great experience and we would recommend.

Thanks!

Nick and Carly from Canada

Yes, Level does make difference. You can use the pool area, with the little grill. Keeps you more secluded and gets you more space and comfort. You can upgrade at hotel..think its around 28 $ pp.

As long as you are at Level, it's fine. Hotel had no ocean view from the Level area...they are all situated around the 2 pools. It is very nice.
