Hotel Puntarena Playa Caleta has garnered appreciation for its friendly staff and well-maintained facilities, with guests often commending the cleanliness of the rooms and public areas. However, opinions on the hotel's value are mixed, as many guests feel let down by the food quality and lack of amenities, suggesting that the experience doesn't always meet expectations.
While the amenities and festive atmosphere receive nods of approval for contributing to a pleasant stay, some travelers note that there's room for improvement, particularly in the consistency of service and room condition.

Detailed Reviews

The experience was positive with regards to our interaction with the people of Cuba. The hotel is not being maintained. We had a few days of intense rain and many roof leaks were evident. By far the worst experience was with the food. No creativity in how they prepare any of their fish, pork or chicken. No beef was ever seen. Desserts were terrible because they have no milk so cakes or anything that needs milk is wanting in flavor and texture.
The beach at Roc Varadero is second to none just beautiful. Two pools one closed for repairs the other was open. Tips if you chose this hotel bring your own condiments and tipping they prefer bills. As a Canadian smallest bill is a $5 so next time I will bring American $1 dollar bills. Finally the location is a fair distance from the Town of Varadero but the have a free scheduled bus shuttle

Dear David Hodgson: Your comment makes a great impression on us because after we found out about the situation you had with your wife, we kept an eye on you until you left and you never told us about the food and restaurants, even your wife gave us an excellent comment. We ask you in the most cordial way to help us rectify.

I was here with friends just last week. We had a really great time!
The rooms were very clean and everything worked, except our toilet was a little wobbly! I loved our little balcony and spent a lot of time out there when I was in my room. Our housekeeper Omera was very creative with the animals she could create out of blankets and towels…the elephant was my favorite.
There were limited food choices at the buffet, but what they had to offer was quite tasty- a lot better than I have experienced on previous trips to Cuba. We didn’t really enjoy the burgers at the beach bar, so that left us with the buffet as our only food option except for the evenings where we were able to book at the two a la carte restaurants that were available to us.
The staff were all very friendly and they do a great job! My favorites were Yudi and Lediannetta downstairs at the coffee bar….they were just wonderful!
The beach was just great. Cuba’s beaches are my favorite of everywhere I have been.
We weren’t around much during the day, but when we were, we enjoyed the entertainment activities offered. We especially liked the music and dancers we saw at the big outdoor barbecue. Elvis on the entertainment staff was really good and seemed to love his job! Unfortunately, we didn’t go to any of the night time entertainment at the theatre, because it started at 9:30- a little too late for us after a full day in the sun! We often sat in the bar/open area outside the buffet and played card after dinner, and there was live music which we really enjoyed. The sax player was our favorite.
I can’t give the Roc Varadero a full 5 stars, because there were several bars/restaurants that were advertised on the Westjet vacations website that were either closed, or were only available to the people who paid extra for the Plus package. This was not specified on the website, and it would have been nice to know about that before we arrived. But what they did have to offer, they did very well, and overall we had a wonderful vacation!

If you want to unwind in the most beautiful natural environment this is your perfect destination at this time of the year. The beach of Varadero fully lived up to its world reputation with its miles of unspoiled white sand and unbelievable blues. The hotel itself is spacious with lovely well tended grounds offering every kind of relaxing activity. There is no sense that you are confined. Most importantly the service is first class. From the reception to the bars, the beach attendants, the cleaners and waiters and administration, the staff are warm, courteous and professional, and couldn’t do more to be helpful.

This is our 3rd time to Roc Varadero…we stayed almost a month…every day a light breakfast, keep fit walk and then the beach…the beach is spectacular…lots of loungers, a few day beds for Plus guests and a little bar to save you time going too far…Roxanna is the best…
The pools are awesome…one was closed most days for painting, but we did enjoy a few days there at the swim up area for cold Crystal Extra…
The other pool bar is wonderful too…the pool is super clean and we spent so much time out there…there is another outdoor bar under a giant palapa roof…nice tables and chairs, lovely cool breeze…and excellent service…Hassan and Hector most days…
Rooms are super cozy…newer beds that are incredibly comfy…sweet patio for reading…we were ocean side so definitely a beautiful spot to relax…
Buffet and restaurants are good…really good actually. Casablanca had salmon and lobster twice and that was a wonderful treat. The Italian is awesome, flatbread pizzas and lovely bowls of pasta…
A newer offering is off the lower lobby outside…the biggest hamburgers ever….loaded with toppings…sometimes they had little homemade chips and other times little French fries…like little matchsticks and there was even a ketchup and mayo…
Buffet is similar each day, but if you try to use things in different ways you can create something lovely.
The staff here is top notch…the whole property is constantly being swept, mopped, wiped, and freshened up…the grounds are beautiful…
This is a lower star hotel doing its very best to be 5 star for every guest.
Management is available and always willing to talk to you if there is anything you need. Don’t go home and leave a bad review if you don’t give him a chance to help you.
About currency…we brought no US any of our trips and didn’t need it. We brought stacks of 5 dollar bills and tens and twenties for conversion to pesos…we spent pesos everywhere for everything…stores and some restaurants only take credit cards and the conversion there is not pretty…but to say you can’t spend Canadian $$$ is absolutely untrue. You can’t tip $5 every time obviously and everyone knows that. Get pesos, tip in pesos, buy souvenirs in pesos…go to Calle 62 and use pesos for drinks and snacks, lots of things…
Do not, however, bring loonies and toonies…completely useless…we traded over $70 worth to try and help out people that asked us…Canadian coins are worthless to the Cuban people.
Another fabulous holiday…looking forward to the next one…
Shout out to Vlad, Omar, Aniel, Pedro, Neliza, Haydee, Marlena and oh just so many more…our family…

We have been coming to this hotel for several years. We like the close proximity to the pools, the beach and the al la cart restaurants and buffet. There have been many improvements since Covid. The rooms are freshly painted, new mattresses on the beds and large comfortable pillows. The staff are very friendly and helpful. The restaurants are limited in the food served, since a lot of the food we would eat at home simply isn’t available in Cuba. However, you won’t starve. There is always fresh fruit, seasonal vegetables, rice and bread. There are usually 3 or 4 meats to choose from. We will be back again next year.

We ended up at the resort by a flight cancellation and our vacation service provider put us up in this resort until they could get another flight for us out of Cuba. This would not be the resort I would choose at all and I’m an average kind of guy as well as my wife and family. Most of the staff were friendly but lady at check in was not very customer friendly at all, my wife tried to ask her some questions and was shewed away very rudely while she tried to serve the next customer in line! On our second day we had our rm cleaned and no towels left so I asked in three separate occasions for new towels and all requests fell on deaf ears. Food was not bad what do you expect it’s Cuba always found something to eat that satisfied our hunger. Hotel definitely needs some updating pretty broke down sub standard conditions. Looked up the price to stay at this place and found out why, it’s the cheaper of options for a one wk stay in veradero so if your not picky you at least have a roof over your head. My tip leave bath room light on to keep away the cockroaches and bring beach towels!

Dear guest, it is a pity that a comment like yours and a discontent of an airline harms us, but when what we did being the only hotel to receive them, was just trying to be as friendly as possible all and wanting you to have a good time the days you had canceled your flight and nobody hosted you more than us, as you well knew, the Hotel received a number of Canadian guests, And we had no inconvenience or complaints as you indicate, which we apologize to improve on the details that we did not meet your expectations. And about what if it is an old Hotel if it is but with great affection we treat all our guests of the nationality that they are, always showing the best attitude and smile, although I know that sometimes it is not everything. Have a happy homecoming and happy new year.

I bought this hotel, because apparently it seems the cheapest. I paid 66 euros a night despite it being empty. Bad food, I found dead midges in the rice, the meat is chewy and untasty. Breakfast doesn't contain anything edible, they don't give you coffee and you're forced to take it at the bar, where there were no teaspoons and sugar and I was presented with a cup with honey instead of sugar and a cut straw (hopefully not used) to mix it.
Only one bar offers you cocktails but do not allow you to choose, only alternative rum and put together other unknown drinks, due to a shot of this drink I spent the night vomiting.
The rooms are old and neglected and full of ants who storm as soon as they find a crumb or other food. Windows that are difficult to open and unsafe. The little helpful staff, do not introduce you to the hotel, do not explain how it works and when you ask for something they seem annoyed. If you're alone, men also seem a little "ambiguous." In short, bad place, and bad holiday in Varadero. I would have preferred to rent a beb or an accommodation in the center of Varadero, at least I would have lived a little 'customs and locals. Never go to this hotel.

I highly recommend the hotel facilities, especially the staff were always helpful and polite at any time. Also the room is always clean and the internet service is fast, I will give 10/10. The bus service that connects you to the center of Varadero is always in order and at the entrance of the hotel ready to avoid mishaps on your way.

The staff at the hotel is friendly, but the place has not resorces to receive tourists at all. Unfortunatelly, this is a place for Cubans living in a country without resorces.
You will get water just the first day, the rest be prepared to get sick drinking tap water. It is common to get to one their bars when you can't even get a drik as they have not glases available. Bring your own glass with you. You have to be luck enough to get a beer, as most of their time they are running out of beer. We got a soda at the Buffet which seems to be tap water with some artificial flavour. ROC and Gran Caribe have to be more than careful inviting people: Cubans or tourist, to stay at this Hotel. When there are not resources, you have to accept there are not resources. Just close the place and wait for better times to come. We are all paying for a service hard to get at the ROC Varadero.
As I have been working with tourism to Cuba for the past 18 years, I will kindly ask the Director to explain which is the plan here, as we made a mistake by bring the whole family to the worst Hotel in the beatifull Varadero.

Went to this hotel after considering some others that are similar in the area. I will start with the pros because there are some strong points
Pros:
Beach, really nice and bigger than in other resorts we have visited
Landscapes are amazing, lots of gardens
Rooms are a little updated but were always clean
Cons:
Food is always the same, day after day
Drinks: very limitated drink selection
Staff: You can select the nice ones, in the front desk some are nice but the service is slow and you don't feel welcome all the time
Entertainment: I think is the lowest point in the resort, I didn't have fun at all, the staff looks tired, they look like they are doing the opposite than having fun, it makes you want to turn around. I don't know if they need better leadership that motivates them but clearly you need to make some chages about it, seriously there's no better way to improve your business than a client's opinion. But overall I will not comeback, that's for sure. Good luck Roc Varadero, hope you can get this as a feedback, you have great location, such a shame that this details spoil your client's experience.

Yes bar is open 24hrs
There are mini fridges inside the cupboard...there are no coffee makers...I will be there the second week of March for 28 days...
The cappuccino is wonderful downstairs in the common area.
Only the first building is in operation. The pools are open one at a time or both depending on capacity. The grounds are spectacular and I would go back tomorrow if I could. An absolutely beautiful place to enjoy Cuba.
