Selectum Family Resort Varadero seems to captivate many with its vivacious atmosphere and spirited staff, though a few guests find the music volume overly loud. The service garners high marks for its warmth and efficiency, albeit with some isolated instances of delays. While the resort's amenities and food choices receive commendations, there are mentions of room and beach cleanliness falling short. Guests have mixed feelings about the resort's value, noting both the appeal of reasonably priced VIP services and unexpected additional costs. The location is generally appreciated for its convenience, but the beach doesn't meet everyone's expectations. Room experiences are mostly positive, with praise for modern features and views, but noise and housekeeping are sometimes concerns.

In reading other reviews, I was thinking 'are we at the right resort'? Our experience was not great at all. I have been to several other resorts in Cuba, so know what to typically expect with food etc., but this resort just did not measure up. The only positives are the beach and the hotel building is nice and new. Upon arrival, only 1 person was available to check people in. Waited almost an hour. They had 1 bell boy to help people checking in with their bags to their rooms. After waiting an additional 30 mins for him to return from helping last person, I said forget it and decided to find my room myself, which wasn't too difficult. Upon arriving to my room I was looking forward to a nice cold beer after my long trip. There was no beer or water in the mini fridge and I also only had 1 towel. My dad was arriving on a later flight, so wanted to get a towel for him. I tried calling front desk numerous times and no one ever answered so I went back down to front desk. I was told they do not stock the mini fridge with beer and I would get 1 bottle of water a day. An additional towel would not be available until the next day (ended up taking 2 days). This is the first resort I have ever been to that did not supply beer in the mini fridge and had to limit water. Very disappointing from the get go. My dad arrived several hours after me, he checked his bed and the sheets had blood stains. We again tried called front desk and no one answered. We went to front desk to ask them to change the sheets and they said they would within the hour. We went to buffet for supper and went back to room several hours later to go to bed and the bed sheets had not been changed. Again, tried calling down with no answer. We gathered up the bloody sheets and took them to the front desk where we were told someone would get to when they had time. They were not nice, or apologetic. A nice attitiude would have gone a long way in this situation. After some arguing, they said they would send someone within the hour, which did eventually happen. To get a beverage, you had to stand in a line at the "lobby bar". This is the main bar and was always busy. Average wait time was 20 mins. There was no menu or drink list, so just stuck with what I know, cervesa and margaritas. Several nights there were not enough chairs for us to sit down so had to go elsewhere to consume our beverage, oftentimes on a lounge chair by the pool. A few days in we discovered the "Jazz Bar" a few doors down from the "lobby bar" and this had a shorter line usually, which was good. The food is what you typically expect in Cuba, however the experience of getting the food at the buffet was not good. Prior to opening for a meal service, everyone lines up at the buffet doors outside and when they open, its a mad dash. People pushing and shoving in front, trying to get to the food. The food signs, indicating what each of the foods actually were, were illegible, very faded, so not 100% certain what we were eating alot of the time. The selection of fruit was minimal. The only fresh fruit was guava and everything else looked to be from a can (peachs and pineapple in a sauce). There was no salt and pepper available on tables or anything. At the meat station, where the cooks cooked meat in front of you, they had a bowl of salt and pepper that the cook would use on the meat. People in line would stick their hands in the bowl and take salt and pepper, it grossed us out. Sometimes there was butter for bread, but sometimes it was gone and they did not refill. We went to 1 al a carte, the italian one, which was pretty good. Definately better than the buffet food. The snack bar was supposed to be open whenever the buffet was not open, but a few times we went and it was closed. When it was open, you can choose to order a hamburger, hot dog or ham and cheese sandwich. Be prepared for a long wait, at least 45 mins. The overall attitudes of the employees were rude and they seemed like they did not want to be there. They were not helpful and did not seem happy. They seemed to be under staffed. Several times we asked for extra water and were told no, they didnt have any. There is a little shop in the lobby where you can buy water, but I feel like you shouldn't have to buy water. Most nights there was no entertainment, which was strange because all resorts I have been to in the past have some form of entertainment, or different shows each night. Nothing like that here. The pools were nice and the beach was nice. The beach was a bit rocky, but as others mentioned, go to the far right by the dock and its nice and sandy there. Overall, I would not recommend this resort to anyone. We couldn't wait to leave.

We stayed from March 28 to April 4. Selectum Family Resort in Varadero exceeded all expectations! The staff went above and beyond to ensure our stay was unforgettable. Beach is good, the crystal-clear waters. We spend most of our time on the beach. The accommodations is spacious and comfortable. We paid for "Selectun Service" (VIP program) and very happy about this. Adisa and Rosi are the best. It makes out vacation great and relaxing. Massage is really good. We can't wait to return to Selectum for our next vacation.

The ice cream was so delicious. Rooms were everyday well cleaned thank you. Beach: yes, did have some rocks, but just go to the right side closer to dock and it is nice and sandy. entreatment team is the best: a specially big thank you to Jennifer and Yan Carlos who made our days in the pull so fun and show as nightlife at varadero.❤️❤️❤️❤️. If you are planning a trip to Varadero Cuba this is the Resort to stay at. My husband and I just returned from a 7 day stay and have nothing but great things to stay. First, the food is amazing!! It was difficult for us to not overeat at this resort between the buffet, snack bar, and restaurants you will find things you’ll like. We highly recommend the Cuban restaurant!! One thing to note is that they do overcook the meat. If you are particular about this, then you can wait in line and have the chef cook it in front of you. Additionally, there are a variety of foods, we recommend trying new things, you’ll likely find something you love this way. Something we didn’t like had to do with the other guests at the buffets taking too much food and not eating it (be considerate of the country you are in and shortages of food)// also other guests butting in lines (be considerate of others). The beach was gorgeous!!! We’ve seen a lot of people complain about it being rocky when you get in. Yes there were some rocks… but it wasn’t to the point where it was something that we were upset about. Tip: there is a pole in the ocean which lines up with the flag in the sand, we found that it was clear in this area. If you are that particular about the beach, then take the $5 shuttle and you can hop off to go to another area of the beach. The staff were very friendly, and amazing!! We do not speak Spanish, and many staff do not speak fluent English- despite the language barrier things were excellent. Tips: Cubans lifestyles are different than ours - they appear to take time and appreciate life- if you have to wait for things, just be patient and grateful for the time and experience it’s worth it. Tip!! Bring American $1 bills (they do not want Canadian coins or Pesos). We left tips in our room everyday and it was always clean (bedding was not changed the entire week- but we are not picky about this). The resort itself is gorgeous and very well kept! Excursions: we recommend the Bus (Jeep) Safari (this was an incredible experience and about $80 per person). They pick you up from the resort and take you to do the following all in the same day: snorkeling at a reef, museum in Matanzas City, Farm where you get to try out some different types of grown foods (bananas/ honey/ sugar cane/ pinneapple/coconut/etc) *get the mojito here*, then you have lunch at the farm which was delicious *drinks included*, horseback riding (or you can ride a bull lol), pressed espresso, then you can drive speed boats down the river, lastly they take you to a cave to swim! (My husband and I joked that this is the perfect excursion for people with ADHD- we had an incredible time and gorgeous photos to look back on). Overall we highly recommend this resort!!

The resort is really nice , the people friendly . The beach wasn't the best it drops off before entering water almost 2 feet ( I think they said there was a storm )and there is a bit of coral or rock in the water , this year was the worst time i got eat with sand fleas! I don't think the rooms were cleaned the whole week we were there .We had a job to close the door of our room and the handle was falling off. There was never any drinks or beer in our fridge the whole week we were there!!!! The food was not good ,I'm not a picky eater by no means I would eat almost anything but there days wit no breakfast items ,I didn't see any potato the whole week , if you like black beans and rice and chicken you will enjoy because that was what we had all week .I didn't see any fish at all there was squid and octopus but I couldn't eat it . Everyone says that's Cuba but this was the worst so far. The evening shows was not what we are used to ,no plays or stuff like the other resorts.

This was our first time in Cuba and wasn't sure what to expect. So I will start with the Pros Very clean throughout the resort and our room as well The room was very spacious and loved the ocean view that we chose Staff were amazing and after a few days the staff in the lobby bar would tell my husband what he wanted to order Loved the dance lessons am sorry I didn't get the man's name who gave them Loved the aqua classes as well again didn't get the individuals' names who instructed us Shout out to the spa and particularly Ida who did my massage; painted my toe nails and finally had a chocolate wrap which was to die for. I even paid for my husband to have a massage as well. The prices were excellent hence why I did more than one service The entertainment in the lobby bar & Sky Blue restaurant were amazing! Now the Cons Food was good in the la carte restaurants but not so much in the buffet. I understand sometimes food isn't easy to get but the way the food was cooked could have been better Wifi was terrible would lose the connection and constantly had to sign in again There appeared to be issues with the elevators throughout our stay The beach area was too rocky and very hard to walk on If the Cons were improved I would have rate this resort excellent. Wow! Fantastic time. The weather was excellent, the hotel was clean and modern no issues and our room was ready upon arrival around 10:00 am (I think we were just lucky). There is enough food variety to find what you like, I would recommend going to the restaurants to switch it up from the buffet. The best part of this resort was the staff. They were so kind, always greeting you with a smile and making sure you had everything you need. Don’t miss the foam party and other activities put on by the entertainment team at the pool lead by Andrés. Make sure you meet Rodny, he has the best energy and wants you to have fun while relaxing by the pool. Yan Carlos and Jennifer have all the dance moves! The coffee is top notch and the drinks are flowing with Alexey bartending with a smile and exceptional service. All in all definitely planning on coming back. (Prepare to have little wifi, honestly it was the mental break I needed, especially from a busy job).

This is my 4th visit to Varadero (March 28-April 4) and I thought I would try this new resort. I loved my ocean view (Room 1432), the newness and the layout of it, as it overlooked the pools/entertainment area. I could sit and enjoy the shows from the comfort of my balcony. The entertainment staff are exceptional. Poolside, evening shows or lobby bar. I enjoyed the musicians at the lobby bar several evenings and those drinks - YUM! As a non smoker, I appreciated the designated smoking areas. As for the food, every day there were several types of yogurt, breads, pastries, milk for cereal and a variety of fruits and fruit juices. I don't eat eggs, but I did see several egg options. Lunch offered salads, cheeses, deli meats, fish, chicken, beef. Not as much pork as other resorts, lots of cabbage and pumpkin. The buffet is unorganized and under staffed with no visible Manager. Those workers couldn't keep up with the demand of clearing and cleaning tables, resetting and providing coffee/hot water/libations. From travelling to resorts over the past 30 years, this is the worst buffet layout and food I have experienced. That's not to negate the workers - it's a comment to management. I expected more. The workers that clean the rooms is hit and miss. My worker was friendly but towels weren't changed out, I made the bed more than the worker, floors rarely cleaned and bathroom / shower not touched. There are USB plugs on each side of the bed (I had king size), working safe, and plenty of hangers. I read many comments on the beach and all is true. The area near the pier has no rocks upon entry; otherwise, it's not a smooth entry as there are rocks. It's a bit of maneuvering, and sometimes comical, to get past the rocky entrance and then it's wonderful. It's not coral. I didn't wear shoes and not cuts to my feet, but I did see others wear them. Whatever is your comfort level. As a Sunwing patron, I took advantage of the one free dinner at the VIP restaurant. The 7th floor location offered lovely ocean/canal views, beautiful setup and good service. The Sunwing menu is preset vs the menu given to paying visitors. My meal left much to be desired. The beer was cold and the champagne was delicious! Overall, for me, I found this resort lacked personality. In speaking with repeat visitors, it has decreased in services in less than a year, which I can see from lack of upkeep in elevators, main floors - but the lobby is kepy clean! As a PSA, be mindful if you keep your suitcases locked in the complimentary storage room. I discovered items stolen from my carry on bag once I reached the airport. The only time my carry on was out of my sight was when in storage. I took advantage of this service due to the several hours lag time before the airport transfer. I was sad from this as in all of my Cuban visits, I have never had this happen. For the reasons above, I would not return to to this resort. I

We booked this because its high review score even higher than most of other 5 star resorts, while the moment we entered the gorgeous lobby and saw the beautiful room, we knew that our choice was right! Their fabulous management work made all the details in perfect condition. Their stuffs are all very kind, well trained, the food was so delicious and healthy.

Firstly, this was our first visit to Cuba so this is comparing against what you'd expect of a standard all inclusive elsewhere in the world. I know Cuba is different, but it may be useful for first time visitors like me. I am basing my three star rating however on what you could expect from an all inclusive regardless of location (standards of cleanliness, hot food being hot not lukewarm, friendliness of staff, facilities etc), especially bearing in mind that this is the most expensive all inclusive hotel I've ever been to! The good: - Staff are generally very good, efficient and friendly, especially the restaurant waitresses. - The pools are very good, not too deep at any point so good for kids who are just learning to swim. - The bedrooms are nice, well designed and the ocean view is lovely. The air con isn't restricted and is very welcome. The shower is good and you are provided with shampoo and shower gel. The beds are very comfy. You are provided with bottled water which can be replaced when you've run out. - There is a gym and spa. - The beach is nice (little kids will probably need water shoes due to the shells on the beach / rocks in the sea) - The cocktails are good, they are very generous with the alcohol! The not so good: - Yes I know you have to expect that the food won't be very varied. However prepare yourself for eating lukewarm black beans and rice, lukewarm pasta, and unappetising looking chunks of unidentifiable veg / chunks of fatty meat or stinky fish with every meal (unidentifiable because there is usually either no signage or the signage that is there has the English translation too faded to read). The bread / pastries are nearly always hard as a rock. They never have fries, proper pizza, burgers, fresh fruit (other than something I couldn't name). The coffee in the restaurant is sludgy and tastes like mud. You will never be able to get hold of ketchup, mayo, jam, peanut butter, syrup, branded coke, so take your own! - The queues in the buffet restaurant are nuts. They probably have it set up that way to avoid food waste, but when you just want a piece of chicken or an omelette and have to wait for it to be cooked for 20 minutes, it gets a bit tiresome. - Food shortages were very evident when we were there (Mar 24). Every day there was a shortage of either bread, cola, other fizzy drinks, fresh eggs, pastries. Again I know this isn't the hotel's fault, but just be prepared. - Two separate members of staff were really rude to us, one to my husband and one to me (one bartender and the nurse). The nurse actually made me cry, she made me feel like I shouldn't be there. I only wanted to ask about whether I could see someone about my mosquito bites which I had had a bad reaction to. And no we weren't rude to them first, this is not a regular occurrence for us! - Our room wasn't very clean. There was a stain of what looked like blood on the duvet (small but easily noticeable), plus unidentified brown stains on the floor and balcony railing. The rug and chair were filthy. The seats in the restaurant were dirty too and we found a broken glass underneath one of the sun loungers. - They have a "DJ" who thinks he's in Ayia Napa or something. When people are relaxing in the middle of the day on the sun loungers he'll randomly start playing something really loud and more suited to a nightclub, resulting in some customers relocating - There's not much for kids to do other than swim. There's a kids' club but I never saw anyone in it (I could be wrong). It's not really a family hotel despite its name, more suited to older adults I would say (apart from the DJ!) - There's inadequate shade provided around the pool for the sun. The shades that are there seem to have been designed by someone who isn't aware of how the sun moves. The sun loungers are hideously uncomfortable, again designed by someone who appears never to have used one before. - The coffee machine in the room is next to useless. A knock-off nespresso machine, ONE pod, two mugs, no milk, no kettle. Not affecting the rating of the hotel but useful info for first time travellers to Cuba: - Everyone wants a tip. I mean EVERYONE. Make sure you take plenty of single USD with you (everywhere you will visit pretty much takes them). I mean at least $50 worth. There's no point taking EUR (as I read on various websites beforehand) - you can use them, but everyone generally just wants USD. Most Cubans won't push you if you don't tip them, but some can verge on a bit aggressive if you say no. - Be careful in Havana. We got ripped off for "donations" a few times, first by someone handing maracas to my son when my back was turned, and then in a restaurant where they pressured me into buying a rubbish CD I didn't want for $10. I could've said no, but it felt really awkward as we were on a tour at the time. That restaurant was an absolutely massive rip off as well. We got taken there on a tour, told we were "supporting local business", but paid $150 for a very mediocre meal that would've cost half the price in the UK. Considering the exchange rate between pesos and USD, they must be laughing all the way to the bank on a daily basis as they have a regular supply of naive tourists! - the taxis are expensive, if you get a classic car from the airport (20 mins) it will cost you $50. - take some diarrhoea medication and bug spray! I got eaten alive by mosquitoes despite it not being summer yet, and all 3 of us ended up with dodgy stomachs (which we think was probably a bug not food poisoning, as we all passed it between ourselves). - be really careful in the sun, it's incredibly strong, and you'll burn quicker than you will in a lot of other countries.
