The Barcelo Solymar is lauded for its prime location near downtown and Calle 62, offering guests convenient access to local sights. While the hotel's atmosphere blends relaxing vibes with a touch of antiquated charm, some guests find the overall value lacking, pointing to issues with room maintenance and additional costs. Opinions on cleanliness and amenities vary, with praise for beach access tempered by occasional shortcomings in toiletry and food options. Nonetheless, many visitors commend the staff's friendliness, despite occasional lapses in service.

Just returned from a 1 week vacation at Barcelo Solymar. We had booked a standard room in the main building 1204, and stayed in this room for three nights. We were very much unimpressed with this room. The door handle came off, the air conditioning leaked on the floor, the shower doors were barely hanging on and it was very obviously mouldy and smelled bad. The beds were so uncomfortable we hardly got any sleep. After the third night of no sleep, we approached the front desk about upgrading to one of the bungalow rooms. There was a room available at a cost of $10 CUC per adult and $5 CUC per child. We were moved to the 31 block of rooms. The bungalow room was SOOO worth it!!! They are nicely upgraded, beds are soft and the walk in shower was glorious! We seriously wish we had upgraded from the first day.
The food in the buffet was acceptable, though the kids were very disappointed not to have any pasta all week. The food was repetitive, but we always managed to find something to eat. We found the atmosphere at the Arenas buffet was nicer, as the Barcelo buffet always smelled smoky, like something was burning.
I can’t comment on the a la carts as we didn’t do any. We heard that they book up very quickly though.
The beach was lovely and as long as you were there before 10am you generally didn’t have any trouble finding a chair.
The pools were nice, though we never saw anyone cleaning them the whole week. We stuck mostly to the pool in the bungalow section as it was quieter than the main pool. The crowd at the main pool seemed to be the drunk/party crowd and that’s not what we went for.
We absolutely loved the location of the hotel as it is within easy walking distance of so many great shops and bars.
They look like they are really try to make some improvements to the buildings as there was a lot of painting going on.
Overall, we would definitely return, but would book the bungalow section.

I am very surprised when I read the negative experiences from this hotel. Coming all the way from Norway, my husband and I with our 2 children had an absolutely wonderful 2 week holiday here in february-march 2020. The beach and the water was really amazing, clean and nice. The staff was very friendly. The friendly gardener, who we spoke with the first day of our stay, came every morning with a fresh hibiscus flower to me and my daughter. The maid wrote friendly greetings after leaving the room nice and clean every day, and made beatiful swans and other figures with the towels. The barkeepers were friendly, and especially to our kids as they came to collect lemonade. The pools were nice and clean, and since the Barcelo Solymar is connected to Occidental arenas blancas, we had many pools to choose between - a really big, nice and clean hotel area. Especially one pool was very calm and nice if you wanted to avoid Music. The AC was working well, both in the lobby, buffet resturants and in the rooms. We stayed first in a double room, but found it a bit small for the family and changed for a small amount of money to a bungalow. Nice and clean, and always warm water in the shower, television both on ground floor and first floor in the bungalow. We mostly enjoyed eating breakfast, lunch and dinner at Occidental arenas blancas, who in our opinion had the best buffet. For breakfast, the kids entered the line to get fresh pancakes, and I started the day With a . The food in the buffet was good, but not culinaric, and you could for every meal choose between a great variety of dishes. Even the ice cream was nice, and we had no stomach issues during our stay. The first days there were a lot of young people partying by the main pool, but as there where other pools to use, this was not a problem for us. If you bring children you should water toys etc. from home, as it was very expensive to buy in the hotel shops. We would love to come back one day!

We visited the Barcelo Solymar for 2 weeks and have stayed there numerous times but ended up disappointed in the hotel. After 6:00 pm they close the Horizontas Bar which is in a nice setting situated by the pool and the only other place to go visit is the Lobby Bar has about 15 tables, it’s loud and supposed to be no smoking on the bar side but of course you get ignorant people ( lots of Canadians) that smoke there is no respect for the workers there and the guest who do not want to sit in a smoke environment. I brought it up to a couple of the managers but they would rather look the other way. The staff has asked people not to smoke but we watched people just laugh and continue to smoke. The managers got out of there so they did not have to deal with this issue. We came to a tropical place to enjoy the outdoors not to sit in a hot smoky room. There should be a security person there to monitor the people. Next you have people fighting again not a nice setting. The description on the internet says the Horizontas bar is opened from 10:00 - 2300 that is false. It sucks to be there have a beautiful setting which was nice to sit there in a nice warm evening and we could not enjoy it. We brought people with us to enjoy this resort and it was disappointing. I had a manager tell us if we don’t enjoy the lobby bar we can go sit in the cigar bar( even worse) or walk over to the other hotel. Spoke to lots of guests and they were angry and disappointed in the hotel. The managers should listen to some of the returning guest because we are the ones that care about the hotel.
The staff at the hotel is amazing under the circumstances. If you have a problem talk to a manager don’t take it out on the staff they can only what they can and what they have to work with. The grounds are kept nice and clean and the pools. The service we received was great. The beach is beautiful.
Thanks to Lala, Grety, Lizandra, Felix, David, Rydel, Morgan, Yuya, Betsy, Daimarys, Hanna, Navi’s, Julio, Nicole, Alein, Camilo, Felix, Osvani,Humberto Aliochy for their friendly good service at the bars. Hermes, Denis, Muruha, Cuco, Jenny, Heidi, Ricardo along with everyone else in the buffet also gave us great service. The Italian restaurant had a good lunch all the staff again was friendly and gave great service. Luis, Papieo, Jose, Malibu, Joey, Jonathan, Portillo, Modesto thanks for working hard at keeping the pools and gardens looking clean and beautiful. Jorge and Xavier helped with a problem in the room. Oscar was also helpful.
It’s too bad they do not have food outside by the beach bar they discontinued doing that, again another beautiful place people used to enjoy their lunch there.
Our maid Natasha kept our room comfortable and clean. We feel the same with all the rest of the staff whether it be the maids, the bell boys, the front staff, the guys on the beach, entertainment staff, the security all great workers.
When they ask to rate the service the service from the staff amazing but the service provided to use is getting less and less, we hope things change because this hotel has great potential.

i don't even know where to start. the buffet is the worst i ever seen the smell when you enter is disgusting. this should be 1or 2 star resort. they say there's an 24hours bar wich is false lobby bar close at 11 and you can just get hot beer after at snack bar. the bar at the beach is occidental side you need to walk so far. been here couple times it's worst everytime and price go up ??? really.the room they seem wtv but been sick every single time i stayed there. met people that were sick too loosing there voice and i think i must have been due to all the mold in the rooms and dirty really dirty a/c. the animation is so boring they do bingo every single day and can't wait for 5 oclock to go and run away. people seem to hate there job not a smile there or an hello.i don't understand the high price for this hotel it should not be more than 500-600 since you have to pay to go out to eat or get a drink that you can actually drink that doesn't taste horrible.the only thing good about this hotel is the location but it's not worth the price there asking it's ridiculous

This was my 2nd time at this hotel, 5th time overall in Varadero.
Positives: location is right downtown, within walking distance of the local markets, rum store, clinic, local restaurants and live entertainment (Calle 62, Beatles Club), Dance Clubs (La Comprisita, Havana Club).
Beach is awesome, food is average (always something to eat), A la Carte Restaurants are above average (Seafood, Spanish, and Mexican restaurant).
Hotel is clean, service is decent, staff are nice.
We had full access to the resort next door, Occidental Arenas Blancas. It was a nice stopover on the way to downtown at night.

Negatives: our room: bathroom sink leaked for the first 5 days; hot water was luke warm at best (50 degr, not higher). No water for whole hotel for 3/4 of the 6th day due to repairs; Our safe was defective and needed repairs.
I called the Service Desk multiple times for the sink leak to be fixed, but the mechanic never showed. They said to stay in the room and wait, but we were on vacation, and could only wait for so long..

Let me start with the fact that I've never written a bad review in my life, but something needs to be said. DO NOT. and I mean DO NOT book with this resort. I don't even know where to begin.
Me and my friend are two young girls in our twenties and I've never felt so unsafe and uncomfortable. Let me start from the beginning. We get to our room and notice our safe wasn't working, which apparently it was missing the entire battery. We went to go see the view from our balcony and when I opened the door the entire shelf above the door fell on my friends head, luckily she wasn't hurt. We then were having trouble opening the front door so we couldn't get out. We tried to call the front reception (which they never gave us a number for so we were guessing numbers) but the phone line wasn't working. We had to stand on the balcony yelling for help or for a phone number to call.
Us two and one other family were the ONLY tourists on that resort, the rest are locals. We were getting dirty looks and stares acting like we were trespassing on their property the entire time. THE FOOD. I ate plain rice for the 2 days we stayed there. There was also some brown juice with beans in it that I wasn't about to try. The food was completely catered towards the locals I've never seen such a limited selection. The buffet had no air con so we were eating our plain rice dripping in sweat.
There was no entertainment, no music by the pool we had to go to the resort next door to at least hear some music.
We were given no shower towels, the other family that was there was at least given towels, however they smelled like sewage and they actually re-hung the sewage towels for their "new fresh towels".
Our room was filled with ants. Ants everywhere, even in the drawers with our clothes, the bathroom, bed, everywhere.
Lights were shut off at night, us two young girls walking in the pitch black to our room that was very far on a resort filled with locals.
They had no plastic cups, we were told we had to bring back our cups to re-use them.
We met with the WestJet agent and both us and the other family were transferred to another resort after two awful days. I also wonder what would have happened if we stayed there for the rest of the week. When we were checking out the ladies at the front desk actually said "its okay girls" as if we needed to feel bad for leaving the resort that we paid for? No apology once so ever.
We ended up getting transferred to Sol Varadero which was the complete polar opposite experience. Amazing service, great food selection, clean towels,, clean rooms, all tourists.

My friend and I booked this hotel to celebrate my birthday as I had stayed here about 10 years previous, and had liked it then. We arrived on January 3, 2020 and the check in process was fine. When were arrived in our room, we were shocked at the condition. There was mold on the walls, broken tiles in the bathroom that hadn't been fixed, the door frame was barely holding the room door up, the shower door was hanging by a thread and eventually fell off during a shower, and we could hardly open the patio door. The food was not fit for human consumption, and in fact we both got very sick from it day one. There was no variety or selection, it smelled bad, and tasted bad. As I was so sick, I lived on bread and rice the whole week. That's all we could stomach. The selections were exactly the same for all 3 meals every day, and it was cold, it was never hot. There was a poor selection of fruit, and what wasn't used one day was put out again the next. The service in the dining room was horrible, slow, if any at all. Tables weren't wiped off after people left. There was no ice for drinks for 3 days, and we were told they didn't know for how long, or why. Their laundry facilities were down, and we never got clean towels for 3 days. Three of the 5 elevators were down the whole time we were there, and never once saw repairman, the one elevator in our section was down twice.
But the icing on the cake from the moment we got there, was, there was likely over 200 young people from Quebec City who were there on some sort of school break, and were obnoxious, rude, extremely loud, and over served alcohol till all hours of the night, which caused fights, loud booming music, yelling and partying until 530-600 a.m. every single day.
These youths ranged in age between 15-24 - unsupervised. We never slept one night our whole vacation, as they were not controlled by security or the hotel management. In fact, I believe the hotel catered to these young people more that other guests. We complained to the front desk on more than once occasion only to have it fall on deaf ears. We spoke to several other couples who had the same concerns, and were thoroughly disgusted. Some packing up and going to other hotels. This by far was the worst hotel I've ever stayed in at Varadero. We couldn't wait to leave and will never ever stay at this Barcelo again. Stay away from this dump!

Went in Feb 2020 with my family. Hotel looks nice from outside but looks can be deceiving. Our room was not available because the guests decided to extend their trip, so we got a different room and the air conditioning was broken. many calls to the front desk yielded zero response. the cafeteria food here is disgusting, barely edible. the all you can drink drinks at the bars are poor quality and tiny, even the beers are poured in 5oz cheap plastic disposable cups. The pool is nice and the beach is excellent - its the only saving grace of the place. spend as much time at the beach as possible and try to eat at restaurants outside of the hotel, especially Varadero 60 - that was a good one.

This is our 2nd time visiting the Barcelo Solymar. It was like going home! :) Staff remembered us from our visit last year at this time. What a wonderful feeling. Alex and Yanni in the dining room always had a table waiting for us and tried to get us anything that we needed. All we had to do was ask. The rooms were comfortable and the king size bed in a single room was amazing. Every day the room was cleaned with a note from the room attendant, who was friendly and helpful as well. The lobby bar staff, Daimarys, Yosvany, Alain, Yuya, Camilo and Julio all greeted us with a smile and a hug and went above and beyond to make us feel comfortable and at home. Everyone was friendly with a smile, from the front desk staff to the gardener to the security person at the door. The grounds were kept immaculately clean, the pool was clean and refreshing. We started every morning with a cappuccino and sugar cane made by the lobby bar staff. I would recommend staying at the Barcelo and taking the time to get to know that staff. You will be happy you did.

I’m writing this review and with the sadness's of how much I miss this resort, I call this place my second home. Everyone is super friendly and helpful. Alexander Hector is the man what a manager with so much positive energy and treats you and makes you feel home. I loved it every second of it and we had lots of fun. I recommend this hotel to most likely young people older people are Welcome but don’t complain if music is too loud. All girls working at the reception are so super nice to the security, waiter, waitress and the cleaning ladies I will for sure come back soon. Go for it it’s affordable and you will have a lot of fun promise from Moosey Mustafa.

There is not adult pools. And only bungalow is ground floor. I do not recommend coming here. The hotel is horrible. No towels for guests, running out of alcohol, bugs in rooms, no water bottles. It's turned into a dump
